Fighting For What Matters Fighting For Friendships (Mark 1:1-12 on page 991 in the Bible in the seat back pocket)
“Don’t believe something just because you want to, and don’t embrace an idea just because you’ve always believed it. Believe what is biblical. Test all your assumptions against the precious words God gave us in the Bible.” Francis Chan “God, I want to know what is true. I know I have cravings that sway and distort my ability to reason. You promise that Your Holy Spirit will guide me into all truth. I pray that He will now. I don’t want to be wrong. I don’t want to be deceived by others or myself. You alone possess all truth, and I want to be on Your side. Give me eyes to see and ears to hear. Give me courage to live and speak what is right no matter the cost. I don’t want to believe anything about You that is not true. Amen.”

Next Step When you heard the question, “Could it be that God has put you here to influence the eternal destiny of others?” What thoughts came to mind? Respond to the following statements: • People rarely drift into community…people rarely drift into anything worthwhile and certainly the evil one will do all he can to keep us from intersecting with God! He wants us to drift…drifting means lack of purpose and direction. Community takes chunks of unhurried time…you can’t do community in a hurry, you can’t listen in a hurry, you can’t carry someone’s mat in a hurry and you certainly can’t be carried in a hurry. • Nenri Nouwen says, “Community is the place where the person you least want to live with always lives.” • The people in Mark 2:1-12 understood the power of community and little did they know that the decision to invite this guy to their small group, or to join this guy’s small group, would have eternal ramifications. There is untapped power in community. Have you ever thought that the physical and spiritual health of someone might be closely tied to interaction with you? • Every time the former paralyzed man sees his mat, he remembers a small band of friends that crashed through a ceiling for him. His greatest gift humanly speaking was not his legs…it was his friends. There’s no gift like community. • To fail to prize community, to tolerate disunity with the people whom God loves, to run from unity, or to do things that could lead to disunity is utterly unthinkable. To allow or contribute to disunity in this fellowship is to be fundamentally at odds with the purpose of God in human history. It may be common in our world, but it is not normal in God’s eyes. What barriers keep you from pursuing community with a few other people? What “mat” do you have that you use as an excuse to avoid pursuing close friendships? What “mats” of others are keeping you from pursuing close friendships? Respond to the following: • Apathy… “standing knee-deep in the river and dying of thirst.”

TODAY, June 24, two prints of each will be available for silent auction bidding. All bids must be placed in the Gathering Space. All proceeds will go towards the ministry of New Cov.

More Opportunities at New Cov To the Ends of the Earth! Julia Catsinas, daughter of Jim and Ramona Catsinas, has accepted a position with the Wycliffe Associates organization to serve as a teacher of missionary children, a combination 3rd and 4th grade classroom, in a Central Asian country for one year. She will be leaving on August 1, 2012 and is in the process of raising prayer and financial support. Today about 350 million people do not have any Scripture in their language. Wycliffe’s vision is to see the Bible accessible to all people in the language they understand best. As a teacher, Julia will help make it possible for missionary families to more effectively do what God has brought them there to do—translate God's word into native languages bringing eternal hope to the people of that land! If you would like to join JuIia in this venture and be a part of what God is doing in Central Asia she needs people who will pray for her and those who can help her raise financial support ( $12,820 annually or $1,068 a month) for her first year travel costs and living expenses. If you are willing to partner with Julia, you can contact her at (402)430-6367 or
[email protected]. She would love to meet and talk with you to let you know more specifically where she is going and the work that Wycliffe is doing.
