Wrapped in Love Ministry An outreach ministry of St. Francis United Methodist Church
The Wrapped in Love Ministry (WIL) was organized in January 2008 and conceived to create weighted items (blankets, vests, bean bags, or lap pads) for children with sensory system disabilities. These weighted items are recommended by physical and occupational therapists to help children “calm themselves.” For example, the weighted blankets help children fall asleep and stay asleep. A vest helps the child calm How You Can Help: himself during periods of anxiety. The lap pads help the child focus in school settings, such Join our group of as sitting on the floor for “circle time.” creators. Encourage While commercial items are available, they are generally expensive and institutional in appearance. Families of special needs children are frequently overwhelmed with the physical, emotional and financial demands associated with treatment of their child, so one of the purposes of WIL is to provide a hassle-free gift, demonstrating the Ministry Members’ love for the family and the child. Created Items:
WIL creates custom-made items with the child’s preferences in mind. To the untrained eye, these items appear to be a regular piece of clothing. Since inception, over 200 items have been created and distributed to over 160 children. Requests come from parents and therapists and are continually being submitted. Our goal is to create the requested items in a timely manner.
Contributors: With the increased demand for items each year, we would like to invite you to join us in our adventure. WIL is totally supported by volunteers who enjoy creating, procuring supplies, sewing and delivering the completed items. Our biggest need at this time is for people who are able to sew. Donation of your time and sewing talent is greatly appreciated. However, if you wish to make a monetary donation, 100% of those funds go directly toward purchase of the zippered vests and jackets, fabric and poly pellets which are used to create items for the children.
