AUGSBURG’S ALL-AMERICAN TRADITION -- Depth has always been a hallmark of the Augsburg wrestling program, and that has shown in the number of All-Americans -- finishers in the top eight of each weight class -- that the team has had in national competition. Augsburg has earned at least two All-Americans every year since 1988. Augsburg has had at least one All-American in national competition every year since 1977 -- 40 straight years. Augsburg has now earned 232 wrestling All-Americans in program history (196 in NCAA competition, 36 in NAIA). AUGGIES WIN REGIONAL TITLE, QUALIFY NINE TO NATIONALS -- Qualifying individuals in eight of 10 weight classes to the national championships, Augsburg wrestling team claimed an NCAA regional title for the 15th straight year, winning the NCAA Division III West Regional crown on Feb. 25 at Concordia-Moorhead. Augsburg won the 11-team regional with 159.0 points. Augsburg has won the team title in its NCAA regional every year since starting regional competition in the 2002-03 season. Augsburg has had seven or more national tournament qualifiers in 14 of the last 15 seasons. Augsburg swept the post-tournament awards, as 184-pounder Owen Webster (FY, Shakopee, Minn.) was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler, head coach Jim Moulsoff was named the West Region Coach of the Year and assistant coach Tony Valek was named West Region Assistant Coach of the Year. LONGENDYKE CAN JOIN ELITE COMPANY -- The 2015 NCAA Division III heavyweight national champion and 2016 national runner-up, Augsburg’s Donny Longendyke (SR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) can join some elite company this weekend, with a chance to become the 12th Auggie wrestler, and third heavyweight, to earn multiple national championships. He could also become the 42nd Auggie wrestler to earn three All-American honors. Currently ranked No. 3 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association national poll at heavyweight, Longendyke enters the national championships with a 24-3 record, including a 20-2 mark against Division III competition. A transfer from Division I Nebraska, Longendyke went 44-2 in 2014-15 to win the Division III national title in his first Auggie campaign, and went 39-3 in 2015-16 to place second nationally. He is now 107-8 in his three seasons at Augsburg, with 81 bonus-point wins (61 pins, four technical falls, 16 major decisions). He is 148-29 in his collegiate career, with 111 bonus-point wins (84 pins, four technical falls, 23 major decisions). Eleven Auggies have earned multiple national championships in program history, led by Marcus LeVesseur, who is the only Division III wrestler ever to earn four national titles (157 in 2003, 2004 and 2005, 165 in 2007). John Beatty was the first Auggie to claim two national crowns (134 in 1998, 142 in 1990). Other Auggies to win two national championships: Gary Kroells (158 in 1992 and 1993), Dan Lewandowski (190 in 1996 and 1997), Henry Gerten (118 in 1997 and 1998), Ben Bauer (HWT in 2000 and 2001), Matt Shankey (125 in 2004 and 2005), Mark Matzek (133 in 2004 and 2005), Joe Moon (174 in 2004 and 2005), Chad Johnson (HWT in 2012 and 2013) and Mike Fuenffinger (125 in 2014 and 2015). Augsburg College -- a tradition of wrestling excellence Augsburg’s wrestling team has dominated small-college competition over the last three decades.
• Augsburg has finished among the top two teams in national competition 22 times since 1975, winning national titles 12 times in NCAA Division III competition and earning runner-up honors 11 times (10 in Division III, once in NAIA). Augsburg finished among the top four teams nationally in Division III competition every year from 1989 to 2012. • The Auggies have won 12 NCAA Division III national championships in the last 24 seasons (1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2015), the most in Division III history. Augsburg is one of only four NCAA schools to have won 10 or more college wrestling national titles (Oklahoma State has won 34 Division I team titles, while Iowa has won 23 Division I team titles and Wartburg has won 12 Division III team titles). Augsburg has also finished second eight times since 1984 and in the top 20 nationally (NCAA from 1983 to present, NAIA pre-1983) every year since 1971. • Against opponents from Divisions II and III, Augsburg is 314-49-1 in dual meets since the 1989-90 season. Augsburg has lost just 45 matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season. • Against strictly NCAA Division III opponents, Augsburg is 305-48-1 since the 1979-80 season. Since the 1989-90 season, Augsburg is 230-38-1 against Division III opponents. • Against opponents from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Augsburg is 206-7 since the 1975-76 season. In winning each of the 14 MIAC Team Dual Meet tournaments, Augsburg outscored its conference opponents by a 3,266-145 margin in going 68-0. The MIAC no longer sponsors an individual tournament and ended the MIAC Team Duals in the 2003-04 season.
Augsburg has a record of individual success nationally, both on the mat and in the classroom.
• Since Pat Marcy won the school’s first NAIA national title at 150 pounds in 1972, Augsburg wrestlers have earned 50 individual national championships, including 46 NCAA Division III national titles, the most in Division III history (Augsburg has been an NCAA Division III member since 1983). Wartburg (Iowa) is second with 42 NCAA Division III individual titles, while Montclair State (N.J.) is third with 28, Brockport State (N.Y.) is fourth with 25, and The College of New Jersey is fifth with 21. • Augsburg has earned 232 All-Americans in school history (since 1969; 36 NAIA, 196 NCAA). Augsburg has had at least one All-American in national wrestling competition (NAIA and NCAA) every season since 1977, and has had three or more All-Americans at 37 different national tournaments. At the 2005 NCAA Division III national championships, Augsburg earned All-Americans in all 10 weight classes for the first time in program history and just the second time in Division III history (Wartburg in 2003). • Augsburg College has also been a success in the classroom. Over the past 30 seasons, Augsburg has produced 131 National College Wrestling Association (NWCA) Scholar All-Americans. Augsburg had six Scholar All-Americans last season and has had 108 athletes honored since 1997. Since the NWCA has awarded Division III academic team national championships, Augsburg has finished second three times and first twice (1998-99, 2011-12), including the 2011-12 academic national title with a team gradepoint average of 3.7341 (4.00 scale). Augsburg has also had 10 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-Americans in wrestling -- Dan Lewandowski (1996-97), Josh Cagle (1998-99 and 1999-2000), Jim Peterson (1998-99), Brian Jones (1999-2000), Mark Matzek (2004-05), Ryan Valek (2004-05 and 2005-06) and Tony Valek (2010-11 and 2011-12).
Head Coach Jim Moulsoff
• Head Coach Jim Moulsoff (Minnesota ‘03) was named the 10th head coach in the history of the Augsburg College wrestling program in the fall of 2014. The 2016-17 season is Moulsoff’s ninth on the Augsburg coaching staff, serving as an assistant coach for six seasons under former head coach Mark Matzek. During his Augsburg coaching tenure, Moulsoff was a part of the 2009-10 and 2014-15 national title squads and national runner-up squads in 2008-09, 2010-11 and 2011-12, with 30 All-Americans and six national champions. Augsburg is 90-31-1 in dual meets in Moulsoff’s nine seasons on the Augsburg staff, 35-10 with Moulsoff as head coach. • Moulsoff is a well-known figure in Minnesota’s wrestling community, having served as a high school coach for 18 seasons before joining the Augsburg coaching staff in 2008. He was promoted to a fulltime assistant coaching position prior to the 2010-11 season, serving as the top assistant coach on the Augsburg staff. He also is the director of the James Haglund Family Fitness and Recreation Center in the Augsburg Athletic Department. • In 2014-15, Moulsoff was named the NWCA Division III National Coach of the Year and Rookie Coach of the Year, along with the West Region Coach of the Year, after Augsburg won the NCAA Division III national title. He also earned West Region Coach of the Year honors in 2015-16 and 2016-17. In 2013-14, Moulsoff was named West Region Assistant Coach of the Year by his coaching peers during the NCAA Division III West Regional. • Prior to joining the Auggie staff, Moulsoff spent 15 years as head coach of the Minnehaha Academy High School wrestling program (1993-2008). In the 2002-03 season, Moulsoff led the Redhawk program to a 12-5 dual meet record and earned the Metro Alliance Conference Coach of the Year honors. He was an assistant coach at Whapeton (N.D.) High School from 1990-93. • In addition to his experience at the high school level, Moulsoff has been active as a coach in many levels of amateur wrestling and has served as the cadet director for Minnesota/USA Wrestling. • A native of Breckenridge, Minn., Moulsoff wrestled competitively at the North Dakota State College of Science from 1981-83, and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota in 2003.

Notes: Augsburg competed as a club program in the 1947 and 1948 seasons before starting a varsity program in 1949. * The last NAIA championship meet for Augsburg was held in 1983, as was its first NCAA III championship meet. Augsburg competed in both meets. Prior to 1983, Augsburg competed in the NAIA national championship meets. # The 2003 and 2004 MIAC championships were from the Team Duals tournament; the MIAC individual tournament ended in the 2001-02 season; the MIAC no longer sponsors wrestling as a championship sport. GLR in the MIAC/Regional Finish category refers to the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional, which replaced the MIAC championships as the national qualifying tournament for Augsburg and other MIAC schools from 2003 to 2012. WR refers to the NCAA Division III West Regional, which Augsburg joined in 2013.
