BREAKTHROUGH : CALIBRE DE CARTIER CHRONOGRAPH

Created in 1917 by Louis Cartier and christened “Tank Normale”, the Tank is distinguished by its solid, rectangular case, inspired by the look of WWI military tanks. While the case has a no-nonsense design, the rest of the watch is endowed with touches of caprice, namely the distinctive chemin-de-fer (railroad style) chapter ring, radial Roman numerals, blue steel sword-shaped hands and sapphire cabochon winding crown – all signature design elements of a Cartier timepiece. The collection has birthed numerous variants. Among the most outstanding models are the Tank Americaine from 1989, which flaunts rounded brancards and a curved case profile; and the latest Tank Anglaise, which features enlarged brancards that integrate the winding crown for a smooth silhouette.

Chronograph movements measure elapsed time, and Cartier’s version features an integrated column wheel mechanism to boost the accuracy of the function. Other technical highlights include a linear return-to-zero hammer for smooth, instantaneous and precise activation of the chronograph counters, and a vertical coupling system that minimises the mechanism’s energy consumption while enhancing its stability.

WRIST WONDERS

Cartier’s reputation as a bona fide watchmaker is further cemented with the launch of its in-house chronograph movement. Unveiled at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie 2013, the self-winding 1904-CH MC Calibre drives the Calibre de Cartier Chronograph.

Besides mechanical prowess, the Calibre de Cartier Chronograph impresses with its elegant style. Available in eight models on leather straps and metal bracelets, from the all-steel version to one in gemset white gold, the watch sports a distinctive dial bearing oversized Roman numerals and a fluted bezel with graduated railway tracks. A blue cabochon – a Cartier design signature – in the winding crown completes the watch’s sporty yet regal allure.
