The Voice of the Wisconsin Sign Industry Since 1970
A Message From . . . Roger Ostermann, 2010-11 WSA President As I write this article, it is Veterans Day. I would like to take a moment to salute all who have served our country. In the sign industry we often talk about our rights. In particular, our right to free speech. Well, without the men and women who have given up so much for our freedom, we would have no rights to fight for. Again, thank-you to all Veterans! We, the Wisconsin Sign Association, held our Annual Fall Conference October 6th and 7th in Danbury, WI. Along with some of the best weather you could ask for and fall colors at their peak, it was just another reminder why we live here in Wisconsin. The conference had a wide range of speakers such as U.L., OSHA, The Signage Foundation, and a social media expert, as well as a number of vendors showing off their new products. The number of entries into the sign design contest were up this year. I cannot tell you how impressed I was with the quality and creativity of the designs. I can tell you that as President of the Wisconsin Sign Association, I would put our designers up against any other sign designers in the country. One of the greatest things about these meetings for me is the face-to-face networking and information that comes from those contacts. Margins are still tight but work loads are up. Some of the other things I learned include: • Many sign shops like us here at RLO Sign Inc. are working overtime and are also adding employees. • Customers are again asking for designs that will make them stand out. • Quality does matter again. • Customers are looking closely at what they are buying, not just looking for whatever is the cheapest. This news is great for everyone in business in Wisconsin! The sign industry's customers are businesses and when our business picks up, it means our customers' businesses are also. A great economic indicator! So for those of you who did not attend, you missed out on a great opportunity to have some fun, to learn and to network with others in your industry. I know we

are all busy, but next year you are going to want to make time to attend your Wisconsin Sign Association conferences. The last few weeks I have been getting notices from ISA of municipality's here in Wisconsin revising their sign codes. I know that often these changes effect more than just the local sign company. Yet the rest of us are not aware of the pending changes. I would like to have the Wisconsin Sign Association start doing e-mail blasts to all our members when we are notified of pending sign code changes. With that I would also like our members to send the association any information they receive of pending code changes. Being this is the last newsletter for the year, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Also, to all our hunters, good luck and have a safe hunt.

Legislative Influence During these economic times, many municipalities are looking at different ways to boost revenues and one way is increasing permit fees, but many communities are looking at more stringent sign ordinances. If you know of a municipality that is proposing ordinance changes affecting signage, please contact the Association office immediately, so we can look into the impact that the pending ordinance may have on the sign industry. The Association is here to help defend your rights.
