An Art Deco-Inspired Abode on the East River Updated Aug. 8, 2017 9:55 p.m. ET 

Location: Manhattan, NY

Price: $6,700,000 The owners designed this Manhattan co-op to take advantage of the views, including adding a television to the terrace—Emily Nonko

The 800-square-foot terrace wraps around two sides of the apartment and overlooks the East River. ‘I’ll

miss those views,’ Ms. Ferrell-Brown says. She and her husband have listed the apartment because ‘I’m looking for another [renovation] project.’

Ms. Ferrell-Brown, age 59, and her husband, a 67-year-old retired lawyer, purchased the apartment in

2014 for $4.125 million. She quickly gut-renovated the 3,300-square-foot space, opening it up so ‘it feels like a loft in a conventional post-war building.’

‘We entertain a lot,’ Ms. Ferrell-Brown says, ‘so I wanted to have an easy flow between living and dining, and a built-in bar because it’s part of how we entertain.’ The kitchen holds two dishwashers, two ovens, two refrigerators and a full-height freezer. Mozambique wood cabinets conceal the appliances. ’We wanted it to look like a room with cabinetry instead of a kitchen,’ she says. MICHAEL WEINSTEIN/STRIBLING & ASSOCIATES

Ms. Ferrell-Brown decided to build a banquette under the window where her guests can relax while she is in the kitchen. The dining room table is also situated so everyone sitting there has water views. MICHAEL WEINSTEIN/STRIBLING & ASSOCIATES

One design challenge Ms. Ferrell-Brown addressed was the apartment’s low ceilings. ‘The design was

intended to expand the space as much as possible,’ she says. The third bedroom—which the couple uses as a den—has a ’bronze knock-off of a vintage light fixture from the ‘50s.’ She says it ’gives off a very cool glow to the room.’

’We wanted to wake up and see the water,’ Ms. Ferrell-Brown says of the design for the master bedroom,

shown here. Accustomed to lots of storage space, she built a 12-by-8-foot closet off the bedroom hallway. MICHAEL WEINSTEIN/STRIBLING & ASSOCIATES

Ms. Ferrell-Brown has worked in the design industry for 30 years, so she tapped her favorite vendors in renovating her apartment. She installed a chevron-patterned Carrara marble tile from the New York tile company Studium.

The master bathroom is lined with a laser-jet tile design by the New York company Artistic Tile, with a

color palette selected by Ms. Ferrell-Brown. ’I was going for a modern, loft-like feeling with an homage to the Art Deco lines found in the apartment,’ she says. MICHAEL WEINSTEIN/STRIBLING & ASSOCIATES

The apartment has three bedrooms and four bathrooms. It is listed for $6.7 million with Linda Maloney of Stribling & Associates.

There are two offices. Mr. Brown’s office, shown here, is off the master bedroom and has a door to the terrace.

Mr. Brown enjoys watching television, so Ms. Ferrell-Brown integrated them into the kitchen and master bathroom designs. She also installed one on the terrace. To combat city noise, they use a smartphone

app that allows them to listen through headphones. ’We sit outside, turn on the app, sit and eat popcorn and watch TV on a nice night,’ she says.
