WSL’s Incoming 6th Grade ELA Summer Reading and Writing Assignment 2017-18 School Year Dear Scholars, Parents and Guardians, Waterside School for Leadership is committed to doing everything possible to improve the reading comprehension and fluency skills of all of our scholars. Recognizing that reading should take place everyday and not just when school is in session, we have developed a Summer Reading assignment. The goal of the assignment is to ensure that all scholars are taking necessary steps to progress in their reading levels as well as serve as a path to one of our first ELA units in the upcoming school year. We have chosen the book Read Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor for scholars to read over the summer. All scholars must read and write about this book. The book is available at the library or can be downloaded as a PDF on our website at www.watersideschoolforleadership.com. Once scholars have read the book, they will complete an essay which will be their first writing piece in their
portfolio for the upcoming school year. They will also complete a Quote Reflection assignment. Expectations for Scholar Summer Reading assignment: ● Read 2 hours per week and log minutes on MYON or fill out MSQI reading log ● Read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton ● Write an essay (ON GOOGLEDOCS) following the instructions in the provided assignment packet ○ If scholars are not able to access a computer to type their essay, there will be specific technology days at the school in which scholars may come into the building to type their essay ● Quote reflection assignment following the instructions provided in the assignment packet (also required to complete digitally) Reading logs and all summer reading assignments are due on the first day of school for the 2017-2018 school year which is September 7, 2017.
