Year 2 Autumn 1 - Parent Letter Topic: Pirates English: Describing pirates using verbs, adverbs, nouns and adjectives. In drama we will make a pirate puppet and practise using commands, statements, asking questions and shouting using exclamations. Writing fact files about famous pirates using ‘did you know’ facts and question marks. We will write stories based on ‘Night Pirates’ by Peter Harris, remembering to structure our stories correctly. We will focus on the different parts of a story. Spelling, punctuation and grammar: Capital letters and full stops, capital letters for names, people and places. Using conjunctions such as, and, because, but, so, then and next to join sentences together. Changes singular words to plurals by adding –es and –s, using the prefix un before words to change its meaning, ie, kind – unkind. Foundation Subjects: We are looking at famous explorers – Christopher Columbus and Captain Cook. We are researching famous pirates such as Blackbeard and Anne Bonney. In Geography we compare our locality with the Caribbean, we locate the UK, different continents and oceans in atlases and on globes. Computing: In ICT we are learning to log on to the computerspitch and save work, control ‘beebot’ robots, use Exploring colour magic to paint pirate and flags. (Pirate Songs - Hornpipes) Calypso and sea shanties.
Maths: Number bonds within 20. Understand tens and ones (units) within a two digit number. Adding and subtracting using a two digit and one digit number. Use directional and position language on treasure maps. Properties of 2D and 3D shapes, lines of symmetry. Recognising the symbols for pounds £ and pence p, combine amounts up to a pound. Find different combinations of coins that equal the same amount of money. Science: Our focus is investigating and identifying everyday materials and their uses. Properties of materials, are they man-made or natural? To know that some materials are used for more than one thing. Making simple observations and experiments and to know how materials change when they are heating and cooled. General: We are going to the maritime museum on the 9th September. Our pirate assembly will be on the afternoon of the 17th and morning of the 18th of October. Please can the children bring in their pirate costumes on both days!! We will have a pirate party on the Tuesday 18th. Check your child’s bag every Friday for homework! Daily reading: Your children need to be reminded to change their books during snack time.
