Summary

Cornelia Funke

This is an exciting book about, well books. The father of our main character Meggie can make the characters of any book he is reading come alive- at a price. You go through many different emotions as you read this book but at the end of all it’s pure enjoyment and wonder.

Tim Hall

A new take on Robin Hood that will make your heart thump. This action packed horror will have any young boy, or girl, eagerly turning each and every page to find out what’s next. It’s a shame books like these can’t go on forever.

Private Peaceful

Michael Morpurgo

A perfect children’s book. Heart-warming and heart-wrenching in equal measure. This book details the life and times, loves and losses of two brothers fighting WW1 together.

War Horse

Michael Morpurgo

One for the equestrians among us. Horse lovers will read this book and want to know what happens to Joey, a young farm horse, thrown into battle. An emotional story told with typical Morpurgo charm.

A Series of Unfortunate Events (collection)

Lemony Snicket

Though every bit like the title, this collection of 13 books documents the tales of the unfortunate Baudelaire Children from the death of their parents in ‘The Bad Beginning’ to the answers of what started it all in ‘The End’.

Neil Gaiman

Despite its title, this a lovely and enduring book. It can be dark and creepy in places but enjoyable nonetheless. A mixture of horror and mystery you’ll want to read to the very end.

Eragon

Christopher Paolini

Full of action and adventure the first in this series of books will be enjoyed by lovers of fantasy. The story may take a little time to start but once it does it rarely stops. A must read for fantasy lovers.

Spooks (collection)

Joseph Delaney

This collection seems to be this generation’s Harry Potter. The library is often running out of the next instalments of these books and as soon as one comes back it’s been taken out again. Is there any other recommendation than that?

The Boy in Striped Pyjamas

John Boyne

Told through the eyes of young Bruno, this is an emotionally charged story suitable for the more mature of young readers. Follow Bruno and his family through the horrors of WW2 and the holocaust. It’s a moving story that will stay with the reader for a long time afterwards.

Harry Potter Series

J.K. Rowling

C’mon, it’s Harry Potter. Need I say more?
