Wichita State baseball got its start in 1899, when Coach Harry Hess’ team lost to Southwestern College in its only game of the season. Wichita State — then known as Fairmount College — fielded teams on an annual basis until the early 1920s when World War I and apathy caused the college to discontinue its program. It wasn’t until 1948 that baseball was resurrected at the intercollegiate level. The Shockers fielded a team every year but two (1962 and 1963) from 1948-70, posting winning records four times in that period. The program was dropped once again following the completion of the 1970 season. In March 1977, former athletics director Ted Bredehoft hired Gene Stephenson, then an assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma, and asked him to revive a program which had been dormant for seven years.
