YMCA World Service Campaign SOUTH AFRICA YMCA

Each year World Service helps bring transformational YMCA programs and services to people in vulnerable communities around the world. Whether providing individuals with job skills to help their families become financially stable, educating marginalized children or empowering the next generation of community leaders, the global Y Movement changes lives because of your charitable contributions. Here are a few examples of the impact of your World Service support:

ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY BUILDING World Service helps YMCAs collaborate beyond borders to share technical expertise, experience and resources that strengthen the Y’s ability to address social inequities. For example, a coalition of 11 U.S. Ys partner with the South Africa YMCA to strengthen organizational capacity, which allows them to serve more than 15,000 children living in extreme poverty through access to academic tutoring, juvenile justice programs, organized soccer and recreation programs in safe spaces that teach values and leadership skills. “In South Africa, the YMCA is helping youth affected by extreme poverty, violence, drugs and unemployment by providing safe spaces and programs that help them develop the confidence, skills and healthy behavior to thrive.” — Kevin Washington President and CEO, YMCA of the USA

HEALTH SERVICES

PERU YMCA

In Peru, almost one-quarter of the population lives in poverty, with 13 percent of young children chronically malnourished. In response, the Peru YMCA focuses on the holistic development of children and youth, with a special emphasis on preventative health services and nutritional support for marginalized communities. In addition, the Y offers programs in education, micro-credit, recreation and social services—impacting the lives of more than 45,000 people every year. World Service strengthens the organizational capacity of the Peru YMCA so they can deliver these services and other youth programs. “Our children eat better, learn by playing and develop skills, and parents learn to be better people. I’m proud to contribute to the eradication of chronic malnutrition in our community.” — Rosario Mayhua Paccosoncco Peru YMCA PERU

RECREATION, CAMPING AND THE ARTS

KOSOVO YMCA

To help advance social inclusion among youth from opposing sides of conflict, many of whom have lost family members to war, the Kosovo YMCA offers recreation and arts programs – including plans for a camp currently in progress - designed to promote personal growth and help them build confidence and discover their talents. With strong Y role models, youth participants develop positive values and well-being in spirit, mind and body. ”We started the process of building the first ever camp in Kosovo. This camp is very significant because Serbian children and Albanian Kosovar children will come together and do activities. This camp is going to have an effect on so many lives.” — Dorina Lluka Davies Kosovo YMCA KOSOVO

EAST JERUSALEM YMCA

EMPLOYMENT AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING In the Palestinian community of East Jerusalem, 85 percent of women and 40 percent of men are unemployed. The East Jerusalem YMCA is responding to this critical area of need by offering high-quality vocational training programs, career counseling and income-generation initiatives to help youth and adults gain marketable job skills so they can secure employment and achieve economic stability.. “Running this small business has had a great impact on the way I view myself. I feel more confident, I feel active, and I feel that I am providing for my community.” — Fadia Program Participant, East Jerusalem YMCA

YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE LEARNING

COLOMBIA YMCA

The Colombia YMCA serves the country’s most vulnerable populations by focusing on staff and volunteer leadership development to support programs that help youth reach their full potential. For example, the Medellin Y offers college preparatory courses to help teens pass the very competitive entrance exam to public university. The courses are affordable and taught by volunteers in the Y who have gone through the process themselves, giving participants a safe space to learn and empowering their resolve to succeed. “Pedro was a kid that lived in one of these marginal areas—a very vulnerable population —and he was given opportunities by the YMCA to study. He worked his way through university, graduated, and now he’s a very successful, very outstanding volunteer for our YMCA.” — Alveiro Valencia Colombia YMCA
