impact on humans. Working in the Hudson Valley years later, Dana began looking for other landscapes to reinterpret, using the knowledge she had learned from the mine project — specifically how to photograph water, which Dana said, “is a pret-
ty complex thing to photograph because it changes constantly.” Dana said she became “better and better at incorporating weather and seasons into the work, making the landscapes transformative

BEACON — Photographer Robin Dana will show her collection, “Watershed: How Industry Has Changed the Water of the World,” at the Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries Gallery on Main Street in Beacon through Oct. 7. Many of the pieces feature landscapes of the Hudson River taken between 2008-09. The exhibit features around 20 color photos taken with a large format landscape camera and traditional film. Dana described the process as a “nod to the history of landscape photography.” The camera itself, Dana explained, is an old-fashioned camera with “accordion bellows, where I throw a black cape over my head and fiddle with settings for about15-20 minutes before taking a shot.” The film creates a 4- by 5-inch transparency digitally scanned and made into prints. She said the combination of her camera and technical aspects give her the ability to produce large prints. All of the photographs in Dana’s exhibit are sized 20 by 24 inches or 28 by 35 inches. Early in her career, Dana said she became intrigued by how industry and humans can affect the

and interpretive.” She said she has always been drawn to places where “water wasn’t really in its natural state, but had been visually transformed by urbanization and industrialization.” Dana calls the Hudson Valley a spectacular area. “There is an incredible history of the people and their relationship to the water that is very meaningful and exciting,” she said. Dana said she remembers being drawn to the wetland areas of the river, such as Poet’s Walk in Red Hook, finding some “wonderful, muddy areas; very beautiful where the landscape was interacting with the water in very interesting ways.” Now living in in St. Petersburg, Fla., Dana said she wishes she had more time to photograph in the Hudson region. Dana said her body of work is not about sending a message, it is about evoking a question or thought. “One of the things I play around with is that sort of push and pull between beauty and repulsion. What someone ...
may find in my work are a lot of examples of pretty dramatic things happening to the water from industry,” she said. Terry Platz, associate public affairs officer at the Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries, saw Dana’s work in another exhibit in Columbia County and thought her photography highlighted the nonprofit organization’s mission. The Beacon Institute is an organization of scientists, engineers, educators and policy experts who use real-time monitoring of rivers to learn how the they function. “Our goal is to be a place for policy- and decision-makers to understand how humans impact water,” Platz said. Besides the gallery, which helps to raise awareness, the organization also holds many free educational events . Dennings Point State Park on the water’s edge in Beacon, was chosen out of 20 locations originally considered by the state in 2003 for the Rivers and Estuaries Research Center. “The ultimate goal is to get a better understanding of how river ecosys-
tems work,” Platz said. “The Hudson River is considered the perfect laboratory for this kind of research.” To help achieve their goals, the organization has developed a Rivers and Estuary Observatory Network. “Our science and technology research uses sensors that read the ever changing chemical and biological components of the water,” Platz said. Although there are some fixed sensors that provide data year-round, Platz said many of the sensors are in the water from
spring through fall due to freezing and ice. “By 2015, the Beacon Institute will have placed about 40 sensors every seven miles along the Hudson River,” Platz said. Eventually, the Beacon Institute, a subsidiary of Clarkson University in Potsdam, hopes to develop cost effective sensors small enough to be used for real-time monitoring in river ecosystems around the world.
