D uring the 1987 clim bing season there w ere 14 groups that clim bed in the Icefield R anges, as w ell as five that skied. M ost o f the expeditions w ere on M ount Logan. C anadians Steve L angley, John L ajeunesse, M atthew Friesen, Stew art B uroker, D ave C hase and M att G roll clim bed L o g an ’s east ridge, as did A m ericans D ick R atliff and Paul R ichins o f a jo in t C anadian-A m erican party led by D avid L oeks. C anadians Don Serl , Jeff M arshall, G reg Fow eraker and M ike C arlson clim bed M ount A ugusta by its w est rib and then ascended L ogan’s east peak by the east ridge. C anadians Pierre B ay, Don D aniel and Y ves G ilot w ere successful on their clim b o f Logan via the King T rench. Five expeditions failed on L o g an ’s east ridge: four A m erican expeditions led by W ally O rr, Phil B oyer, Ron B eaucham ps and Steve Y oung, and Scots led by C harlie M acL eod. D avid C heesm ond and C atherine Freer are m issing after their attem pt on the H um m ingbird Ridge and are presum ed dead. C anadians M artyn W illiam s, G eorge H enry, Joseph Johnson, Liz D esm ore, and R oger M itchell clim bed M ount Steele along the southeast ridge. C anadians G erald H oldsw orth, Rory M cIntosh, M ary Clayton and Liz H ofer clim bed Steele via the W ashburn -B ates route w hich goes through the saddle betw een Steele and L ucania. H oldsw orth later jo in ed D onjek U pton, G arth M ow at and Paul Langevin in an unsuccessful attem pt on M ount U pton. C anadians Pat Sheehan, G reg H orne and Jeff W eir clim bed M ount W ood, although Ron C ham bers, Bob H aney, Ray B renem an, Bruce Sundbo, C harlie Z inkhan and C lerence Sum m ers did not make it to the sum m it.
