Do You Believe In Miracles? By Stephen Harrison Senior Pastor, Family Church
At the 1980 Winter Olympics, the underdog United States hockey team defeated the seemingly unbeatable Soviet Union to win the coveted gold medal. As the United States scored the winning goal, sportscaster Al Michaels coined the legendary phrase, "Do you believe in miracles?" While winning a hockey game is hardly a miracle, ask yourself that question about God: "Do you believe in miracles?" A better question is, "Do you believe He can do a miracle in you? Psalm 77:14 says, "You are the God of miracles and wonders! You still demonstrate your awesome power." Another scripture says, "He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted" (Job 5:9). I believe God still does miracles today and desire to do one in me! One of my favorite miracles from Scripture is the resurrection of Lazarus in John 11. Lazarus, a good friend of Jesus, was sick and died. When Jesus heard about his sickness He didn't instantly go to help him
and in fact lingered where He was for two more days! That doesn't sound very loving. But God is always in control and has the ultimate plan. How many times have you prayed for God to show up and it felt like He was delaying or ignoring you? Jesus assured them the sickness would not be unto death and God would get the glory (v. 3-4). Sometimes we do not fully understand where God is coming from or how He works. But we must trust Him even if we cannot see what He's up to. He obviously doesn't work according to our plans but always has the best plan. When He doesn't show up how, when, or where we think He should we often begin to doubt. That was true of the greatest heroes of the faith. Thomas (John 20:24-29), Gideon (Judges 6), and Abraham (Genesis 17-18) all doubted but God performed miracles in front of their very eyes. We also tend to give up on God in the middle of our doubt. That's what it seems Mary did. When Martha heard Jesus was coming she went to greet Him instantly but Mary stayed home (John 11:16). Maybe she was sad, bitter, or
had simply lost hope. Jesus was about to break through sadness, doubt, bitterness, and hopelessness in Mary's life and can do the same in ours. Jesus replied to Mary's doubt with one of my favorite Scriptures (John 11:25-26). I often repeat it in my head when doubt, death, and depression enter the picture. Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" What great facts Jesus gave - but it has to move beyond facts to faith! God wants to move you beyond information to transformation! As Jesus asked Mary I ask you, do you believe this? Comforted by the truth of Christ, Mary replied, "'Lord,' Martha said to Jesus, 'If you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask. I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world'" (John 11:27). In the middle of doubt Mary knew Whom she believed in and His ability to do a miracle in her life that day
despite the bleakest of circumstances. Now, when Jesus wants to do a miracle we tend to start over analyzing things - especially the impossibilities. John 11:38-39 tells us the people brought up the facts Lazarus had been dead four days and stunk! But never fear! Jesus resurrects dead things! What is dead or dying in your life? What stinks? Do you believe Jesus can resurrect it? Stop over analyzing things and stop calling dead what Jesus wants to resurrect. So what if it's dead - there must be a death before there can be a resurrection! When things seem dead and impossible Jesus does His greatest work! Jesus lovingly called Lazarus by name (John 11:43-44) and knows your name as well. Do you believe in miracles? They are not just for others. Do you believe Jesus can do a miracle in you? As for me, I choose to believe what Jesus said instead of merely believing what I see. Jesus supersedes facts, feelings, and fear. He can do the impossible. Again I ask, "Do you believe in miracles?" He can do one in you!
