Making Your Life Count By Stephen Harrison Senior Pastor, Family Church
Does my life really count? Am I making a difference? Those are questions I ask myself and God every day - some days more than others. I too often get caught up and worked up in the details of matters that really don't matter one bit in view of eternity. That's the battle of busyness. The real question is busy about what? I too often find my time, energy, thoughts, and even prayers directed at the wrong things. It isn't that these things don't really matter. The real question should be, "Do they matter to God?" Don't get me wrong - there are some important issues in this world but global worship outweighs global warming any day. There are good issues to be involved in but there are always greater ones. Does what concern God concern me? Do I pray His prayer lists instead
of my own? What moves the heart of God? "Is it good or is it God" should be the qualifier of my motivation. I find myself the most frustrated when my time, energy, and attention are consumed with the worry and complexity of earthly things and not the eternal things that move the very heart of God. I'm tired of filling my time with matters that don't matter to God. Let me illustrate it. I love Razorback football. The other day I sat down to watch an entire Razorback football game for the first time this year. But when a couple called needing marriage counseling I instantly knew that was more important than watching the Razorbacks win their first SEC game under a new coach. As pumped as I was about the game I thought of what Paul said in Philippians 3:8, "What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord,
for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ." There are great obstacles to growing in Christ and distractions are one of them. It's hard to hear God's voice when your life and thoughts are crowded with the cares of this world. Luke 8:7 says the seed the farmer sowed grew but the weeds choked it out. While there were good seeds sown and the plants grew they never matured and yielded fruit because they were strangled by weeds. Sometimes the great we want to do with our lives is put in a chokehold. Our lives never matter or mature because this life's worries beat us down. We are all busy. But being busy and productive are vastly different. I sometimes find myself going physically but not growing spiritually. So how do I make my life count? I must pull some weeds. I must be a weed puller. I also
must sow right seeds because you reap what you sow (Galatians 6:7). The cares of this world can pull you in so many directions. Every time I think about the phrase "pulled in every direction" I think about the torture of a rope tied to each limb and being pulled by a force so great it rips a body into many pieces. We either pull weeds of distractions or let them pull us apart and choke out your very life's purpose of glorifying God. There's an interesting fact about weeds you don't have to plant them. Weeds spring up without effort. A well manicured lawn is free of weeds because someone was intentional about growing the right things and pulling out things that kill. I must choke out the weeds before they choke me out. What is more scary to me than failing is only succeeding at things that really don't matter.
