I’m not usually a fan of premixed cocktails and the like. They rarely taste fresh, are too often filled with artificial ingredients, sugar, and flavors, and frankly aren’t worth the extra expense. Often the drink isn’t that hard to make anyway! I felt that way about premixed sangrias until I tasted Begonia. I’d heard about it from industry friends, and notably how a couple of high-end restaurants in Denver who were famous for their house-made sangrias had switched over to Begonia because it was better than theirs. So we tried it, and I have to say it is fantastic. It is made from organically grown grapes from central Spain and Valencian citrus from orchards near the winery. It clocks in at a reasonable 7% alcohol so you can have a second glass, as you surely will want to. It carries its cranberry and cherry fruitiness on a nice citrus acid frame, with a slight vinous note that reminds you it’s not fruit juice. It is subtly sweet, but it is fruit sweetness, not sugary. It comes in a one liter bottle, making it an even better value. This is the definition of quaffable. If you need a change from your typical weeknight tipple, give it a try. Serve it over ice in a tumbler, and it will make your next patio excursion a Reg. $10.99 great one.
Last week our distributor offered us an even better deal on this wine, and without hesitation I went for it. This was already a great deal at our usual sale price of $16.99, but getting the price down even further was really just the icing on the cake. Clos la Coutale is located in Cahors, France, which is in the south west between Bordeaux and the Rhone Valley. Cahors is the original Malbec producer, long before the grape ever made its way to Argentina. Malbec was planted in Cahors almost 2,000 years ago by the Romans, and these “black wines” were wildly popular with Kings, Emperors, and Popes until phylloxera wiped out the vineyards at the end of the 19th century. The vines were replanted and Cahors was awarded AOC status in 1971. Cahors are delicious wines; dark and inky, (hence the nickname “black wine”), fruity, herbaceous, floral, and earthy. Clos la Coutale is 80% Malbec and 20% Merlot to round out the wine and add a little more elegance to this powerhouse. Dark cherry, blackberry, cocoa, leather, dried violets, and sage are all apparent on the palate, with beautifully integrated tannins and bright acidity. Perfect steak wine! Instead of grabbing an Argentinian Malbec next time you’re in, try the original from Cahors. Cheers! Reg. $19.99

NEWMAN’S OWN
les Quatres terres Côtes du Rhône 2012

Last week I wrote about a Cotes du Rhone that was very elegant and silky. In contrast, this week’s wine is also a Cotes du Rhone, but stylistically much more masculine and structured. Santa Duc, named for the Grand Owl that oversees the vineyards in the Rhone, was established in 1874 but it wasn’t until 1985 that Yves Gras began bottling the estate’s wines. For the Les Quatres Terres, the fruit is harvested from their vineyards that lie in 4 of the communes of the Rhone Valley, each giving its own character to the end result. Yves follows very traditional vineyard management techniques and with the 2012 vintage, the estate was certified organic. It is amazing how different this wine is from last week’s. Gamey and beefy notes mixed with dark fruit and spicy herbal aromatics jump out of the glass and foretell a big, meaty wine. On the palate, the wine has nice body and grippy tannins, but everything is balanced by nice acid and dark fruit. This is a burly style of Cotes du Rhone, but after about 15 minutes open in the glass, the gamey notes do subside a bit. But don’t get me wrong, you’ll definitely want to pair this with meat of some sort. What a steal at this price! Enjoy! Reg. $23.99
