Harrisburg UMC Children, Youth & Adult Ministries A word from the Director of Student Ministries It is that time of year again! Everyone is heading back to school. Some are excited about all of the changes, n the next couple weeks, while others are dreading it as their last days of summer freedom come to a screeching halt. Personally I always love the old Staples commercial where the dad is buying school supplies and the song in the background is “It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” while his two children look on with incredibly sad faces. I used to embarrass my son by imitating that commercial while shopping for back to school supplies. Well, no matter where you or your kids fall on the back to school scale, it is that time once again! Here at HUMC we are quickly gearing up for another exciting year of Sunday School. We are making plans, getting teachers lined up, encouraged, and trained, trying new curriculum in a couple areas, and even creating separate classes for the Middle High and High School youth! When we hear the word “school” I know many of think of it in a negative light, especially many kids. Well, I would like you and your family to consider it in a different frame of mind. When you think of Sunday School, I want you to begin to think of it as an opportunity for your child and for you to grow spiritually. Sunday School is where we teach about the love of Jesus Christ and the truths found in the Scriptures. It is never too early to begin teaching and reinforcing our faith in our children. It is also more than simply a Sunday morning type of event. What is talked about and learned also needs to be reinforced at home. This year we will be making an effort to keep parents informed on what we are teaching and giving you ways in which you can continue to discuss what we talk about in Sunday School at home. We will be encouraging you as the parents to deepen your own faith as you help us deepen the faith of your kids. So come and join us Sunday mornings from 9:45 to 10:45 am for a time of learning and growing together. On Sunday, August 28th, at 9:30 am we invite children, youth and adults to gather for a time of refreshments and introduction to the new Sunday School year in the fellowship hall. Following the introduction and a few instructions for parents, the children and youth and their parents will be dismissed from the fellowship hall to go meet their new teachers for the year and then parents will be welcomed back to hear what will be happening in adult Sunday school as well as hearing a short devotion from Pastor Wes. I hope to see you all there! Pastor Richard Smith List of classes and locations on the next page…..

A Dream Mission Project Have you ever considered going on a mission project to a far away place where you would be involved in a project that would change people’s lives? Then you realize that your job is in a stressful period; your kids need to be at scouts, dancing lessons, athletic practice; you spouse has a honey-do list of projects longer than the receipts you get these days at the grocery store. And you say to yourself “what was I thinking”? Well, despair not there is a mission project that you can be involved in that only lasts one day and you will change people’s lives. You won’t even need to get that regiment of vaccinations or get on a plane. Almost every year since 1993 HUMC has been involved in a Habitat For Humanity building project work day. We spend one Saturday doing one of the many tasks that puts affordable, decent housing within the reach of a deserving family, a dream come true. All you need to participate is the desire to help, to be 18 years old or older, and possibly have the knowledge of which end of a hammer goes in your hand. Beyond that you will be given on the job guidance to complete the task. This year the work day will be on September 10th 8:00 am to 3:00 pm and the schedule, which may change, says we will be putting down laminated flooring (you don’t even need a hammer for that). If you are interested in participating, email John Lomonaco
[email protected] or call him at 704-455-5053.

This is the first time I can remember that we did not run out of shampoo and deodorant in one day. Thank you for your continued support. It is very much appreciated by many!
