HARRISBURG UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

Sunday School, Is It Worth Your Family’s Time and Commitment?

Sunday school attendance seems to be shrinking even as the church is growing. Why is that? Why do so many come only to worship on Sunday mornings and skip Sunday School? Maybe we are in too much of a hurry or maybe we just do not realize the potential impact Sunday School can have on our own personal spiritual development. I remember going to Sunday School as a teenager and being a regular attender. My parents did not go to church at that time in my life, but I still went every Sunday without fail. I can remember when some lessons were excruciating boring, and some were somewhat interesting. I can not remember any specific lesson any of my teachers taught, even though I know my faith and heart were influenced and shaped by those lessons. What I did get out of Sunday School was a life long love for studying the Bible, and relationship with my peers and teachers that still influence and shape me today. As a matter of fact, I still talk regularly to and lean on many of them today. My Sunday School teachers impacted me even more than my youth pastors did because they were and are the ones that I continue to have relationships with today. Their influence still holds me accountable for my behavior, the way I love and accept others, the way I feel the need to study the Scriptures, and even the way I should be striving to follow Christ in my daily life. So, I would say that Sunday School and those involved in my early spiritual development were key for me becoming the person I am today. Another element that is crucial in faith development for everyone is community. Relationship with others on the journey to follow Christ leads us down deeper paths of spirituality than we would ever navigate on our own. Sunday School can be that place where life long bonds are formed. It is a place where we can be vulnerable and share what is on our minds and hearts. It is a group of folks that can challenge us or help us as we face what life throws at us. Sunday School and small groups are places where we can encounter the Holy Presence of God and enter into conversations with one another about what He is calling us to do and become! I encourage you all to find a Sunday School class or small group and also to get your children and youth involved in learning and community that does last a lifetime! Pastor Richard

Sticky Faith Book Study to Begin Sept. 13th - Oct. 11th, 6:30 - 7:30 pm @ Richard & Amy Smith’s Home Giving seniors a “Graduation Bible” and hoping for the best just isn't cutting it. Roughly 50% of students walk away from the church after they graduate High School. In response to this problem, the Fuller Youth Institute has conducted the College Transition Project, a national longitudinal study following over 500 high school seniors during their first three years in college.  The goals of this research are to understand the dynamics of youth group graduates transition to college and to identify the relationships and best practices in youth ministries, churches, and families that can help set students on a trajectory of lifelong faith and service. FYI’s research confirms that it’s never too early or too late to start developing faith that continues to grow and lasts.  “Sticky Faith gives parents and leaders both a theological/philosophical framework and a host of practical relationship and programming ideas that develop long-term faith in teenagers.” excerpt taken from Fuller Institute Sticky Faith Website.   This study is designed for anyone raising or hoping to influence an older elementary to high school youth to have the opportunity to develop a faith that will take them through their college years and beyond. It will last 5 weeks and will meet at the home of Richard and Amy Smith. Cost will be $10 for the book. We will meet Wednesday nights from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm, September 13th – October 11th . Please sign up by letting Richard know at [email protected] and by bringing in your payment by September 3rd. !3

Greetings, my name is Shirley and I love to go to the movies. I’m interested in starting an afternoon Finding God in the Movies small group, based on a book by the same name. I think it would be interesting to discuss what we can learn from the movies about God, the world, and each other. Right now, I’m just trying to figure out if this interest anyone else. Please email [email protected] or call me 704-456-8181 if you like to be part of this conversation.
