iBelong Update
In 2013 we began to explore how our congregation might reach out to children with special needs and their families, specifically children on the Autism spectrum. A group of church members spent time in prayer and conversation and determined what we felt would be the best path forward. That year, we asked for and received permission to turn the church parlor into a Multi-Sensory room that was funded by your generous contributions as well as a grant from the Metro District of the UMC. In the 4 years since this journey began, we have participated in the Autism Speaks Walk and the Autism Society Fun Run, helped at special events for the Autism Society of Cabarrus County, contracted with Blue J Cleaners (a company that hires adults on the autism spectrum) to clean our church, and supported 2 autism classrooms at Patriots Elementary. This entire ministry has helped us open our eyes to the needs around us and enabled us to be in relationship with our community and we call that a WIN for God’s Kingdom! As with anything new, you make your best guess as to what will work and some times things work out differently. As it turns out, we have not used the designated Multi-Sensory Environment (iBelong Room) as much as we had hoped. With our church growing, we have decided that we can not continue to keep this space as a designated room and have asked the Trustees to transition it back to general church use. We plan to keep many of the items for children with special needs in secure storage where they can be easily accessed as needed in the future. As we continue to cultivate relationships in our community we hope to expand our reach into the schools and to continue supporting and partnering with other organizations. The iBelong Room may be changing, but the ministry continues and we hope you will continue giving your prayers and your time to love all God’s children! Robin Breidinger, Chair of iBelong and Pastor Toni Ruth
