MIGUEL MAYSONET • RB • Senior Stony Brook • Riverhead, N.Y.
TANNER BURCH • MLB • Sophomore Gardner-Webb • Savannah, Ga.
Maysonet rushed 21 times for 158 yards and a touchdown in Stony Brook’s loss at Syracuse. He averaged 7.5 yards per carry and added a 71-yard touchdown run that gave the Seawolves a 17-14 advantage late in the second quarter. It was his 14th career 100yard rushing game as he eclipsed 3,000 career rushing yards at SBU.
Burch posted a career-high 16 tackles (6 solo, 10 assisted) and had a fumble recovery and pass break-up against Samford. His fumble recovery halted a Samford drive at the GWU 30-yard line, and he helped limit the Bulldogs to 107 yards in the second half. Burch had a critical third down stop early in the fourth quarter that led to a Gardner-Webb scoring drive, and had a pass break-up on third down in the same period to end another Samford threat.
BO LINDSEY • P • Senior Gardner-Webb • Spartanburg, S.C.
JOSH WOODRUM • QB • R-Freshman Liberty • Roanoke, Va.
Lindsey averaged 42.7 yards on six punts against Samford. He pinned two inside the 20-yard line, and had four punts of at least 46 yards -- including two that traveled 52 and 57 yards. The Bulldogs managed three returns on his six kicks, with just two going for positive yards.
Woodrum made his first collegiate start and was 34-of-44 passing ( =77.3 percent) for 322 yards and two touchdowns at nationally-ranked Montana. His 34 completions set a Liberty single-game record and tied for third-most in Big South history. The redshirtfreshman completed passes to nine different receivers, including a 14-yard TD pass to Pat Kelly and a 31yard scoring strike to Ryan Ferguson. Woodrum threw for 15 first downs and had five completions of more than 20 yards.

MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 Stony Brook RB MIGUEL MAYSONET became the fourth player in Big South history with 3,000 career rushing yards when he eclipsed the milestone this past Saturday at Syracuse. The senior is fourth alltime in League annals with 3,143 rushing yards, and needs 491 to break the Conference career record of 3,633 set by Liberty’s RASHAD JENNINGS from 2006-08. Here is a look at the Big South’s 3,000-yard rushers: RK 1. 2. 3. 4.

MORE ON MAYSONET Stony Brook RB MIGUEL MAYSONET has rushed for 382 yards through Stony Brook’s first three games, the highest rushing total after the first three games of a season since former Liberty RB EUGENE GOODMAN rushed for 388 yards in the Flames’ first three games of the 2004 campaign. Meanwhile, Maysonet is the first Big South player with two rushes of at least 70 yards in the same season, as he had an 84-yard rush in the season opener vs. Central Connecticut State and added a 71-yard scamper this past Saturday at Syracuse. Maysonet is now the third player in Big South history with three rushes of 70 yards or longer, joining Coastal Carolina’s MIKE TOLBERT and Gardner-Webb’s DAVID MONTGOMERY. HAZEL EYES Coastal Carolina WR MATT HAZEL has caught a touchdown pass in five consecutive games, which is tied for the third-longest streak in Big South history with former VMI standout TIM MAYPRAY. The second-longest streak belongs to former Gardner-Webb WR DUVAUGHN FLAGLER (six games), while former Coastal Carolina All-American JEROME SIMPSON holds the Big South record for most consecutive games with a touchdown reception at nine. JAMES THE XI Charleston Southern DB CHARLES JAMES recorded his 11th career interception this past Saturday at Illinois, tied for third in League history and matching the school record set by PHILLIP ASHLEY from 2006-08. For James, it was his fourth career INT against an FBS opponent. He had two picks at Hawai’i in 2010 and one interception at Florida State last season. James has 20 career pass break-ups (ninth all-time) and is seventh in Conference annals with 31 passes defended. His 143 INT return yards are fifth-most in the Big South record books. LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP For the third consecutive week, Stony Brook QB KYLE ESSINGTON and WR KEVIN NORRELL connected on a pass play of at least 60 yards, this time hooking up for a 63-yard TD strike at Syracuse. In Week 1, it was an 89-yard touchdown pass against Central Connecticut State -- the second-longest pass play in Big South history. In Week 2, it was an 86-yard scoring strike against Pace -- the fourth-longest pass play in Conference annals. Essington and Norrell are the first quarterback-receiver combination with two 80-yard pass plays in the League’s record books, while Norrell is the first Big South player with two 80-yard catches. Essington is the fourth Big South signal-caller with two 80-yard completions. TOUCH SCHEDULE Liberty will play its third consecutive nationally-ranked opponent this Saturday when the Flames host No. 13/16 Lehigh. It will be the third time a Conference member played back-to-back-to-back games against nationally-ranked foes, as Gardner-Webb did so in both 2005 and 2006. Liberty played three nationally-ranked opponents in 2011, its most as Big South members. The Big South single-season record for most games played against nationally-ranked programs is four (seven times, last by VMI in 2011). BEATTY ON IT Gardner-Webb QB LUCAS BEATTY threw for a career-high 320 yards this past Saturday against Samford, becoming the first GWU signal-caller with 300 passing yards in a game since STAN DOOLITTLE had 301 at VMI on Oct. 3, 2009 and the most since DEVIN CAMPBELL had 338 against Coastal Carolina on Nov. 8, 2008. Beatty’s 30 completions against the Bulldogs are the most for a Gardner-Webb QB since Doolittle had 32 in the VMI game in ‘09. WOODWORKING Liberty QB JOSH WOODRUM threw for a career-high 322 yards this past Saturday at Montana while completing 34 passes -- tied for third-most in a single-game in Conference history and the most in a game since Presbyterian College QB BRANDON MILEY had 34 at Gardner-Webb on Oct. 18, 2008. Woodrum’s 322 passing yards against the Grizzlies were the most by a Flames’ QB against a nonConference opponent since MIKE BROWN had 338 passing yards against St. Francis (Pa.) in the 2010 season opener.

SEAWOLVES LOOKING TO EXTEND HOME WIN STREAK TO NINE Stony Brook has won eight consecutive home games, a streak that began Sept. 24 of last year. It is the sixth-longest home win streak in Big South history. During this streak, the Seawolves are averaging 46.8 points (including six 40-point games) while holding their visitors to an average of 16.6 points. The Big South record for longest home winning streak is 12 games. BYRD WATCHING Presbyterian College RB LANCE BYRD, who became the 12th player in Big South football history with 2,000 career rushing yards when he surpassed the milestone in Week 1, is currently 12th all-time in League annals with 2,169, and needs 46 rushing yards to move past former Coastal Carolina RB PATRICK HALL (2,214 from 2003-05) for 11th. SCORE-FOR-MORE PROMOTION Stony Brook RB MIGUEL MAYSONET became the fifth non-kicker in Big South history to score 200 points in a career when he surpassed the milestone in Week 2. He is now 10th in League annals with 216 points. His 36 career touchdowns rank fifth in Big South history, and he needs two to tie VMI’s TIM MAYPRAY (2006-09) for fourth all-time at 38. Maysonet needs to reach the end zone four more times to become the fourth player in League history with 40 career touchdowns. Meanwhile, Maysonet’s 32 career rushing TDs are third-most in Big South history. CALL HIM PRESSURE PEMASA Gardner-Webb junior DL PRESTON PEMASA, who became the 10th player in Big South history with 30 career tackles-for-loss in Week 1, is eighth all-time with 32.0 and needs a half TFL to tie former Charleston Southern linebacker JADA ROSS for seventh at 32.5. KING OF THE HILL Coastal Carolina QB ARAMIS HILLARY, who became the ninth quarterback in Big South history with 10 career rushing touchdowns in Week 1, remains ninth all-time with 11 and needs two more rushing scores to tie former Chanticleer QB TYLER THIGPEN for eighth. Coastal Carolina is 9-1 in games when Hillary scores a rushing touchdown (2-0 this season), and in games when Hillary rushes for a touchdown and throws a TD pass, the Chanticleers are 6-1 (also 2-0 this season). STRINGING THEM ALONG Stony Brook QB KYLE ESSINGTON has thrown a touchdown pass in seven consecutive games, while Coastal Carolina QB ARAMIS HILLARY has a five-game TD pass streak. Essington’s streak includes tying the Big South record for consecutive games with at least two touchdown passes (six), and has 16 TD throws in his streak. Hillary has totaled 10 touchdown passes in his current string. POINT OF ORDER Liberty owns the Big South record for most consecutive games with a point scored at 77, having broken the old mark of 67 last season. Meanwhile, Gardner-Webb has not been shutout in its last 47 games, followed by Stony Brook (43) and VMI (23). DOUBLE DOWN Liberty is the Big South’s active leader for most consecutive games scoring in double figures at 21, tied for the fifth-longest streak in Big South history. The Flames took over the top spot after Stony Brook’s streak of 28 consecutive games was snapped last season on Sept. 3 at Buffalo, as the Seawolves managed just a touchdown against the Bulls. FOGG ALERT Liberty All-American kick return specialist KEVIN FOGG returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown in Week 2 against Norfolk State, his first career punt return touchdown and his fourth career kick return TD -- second all-time in Big South history. He is one away from tying the mark of five set by former Flame DOMINIC BOLDEN, who returned three kickoffs and two punts for scores during his career from 2005-08. Fogg’s 77-yard punt return is the sixth-longest in the Big South record books. Meanwhile, Fogg is 11th all-time in League history with 1,039 career kickoff return yards. SKIFF & WESSON Stony Brook kicker WESLEY SKIFFINGTON set a Big South single-game record with 11 PATs made and attempted in the Seawolves’ 77-7 win over Pace in Week 2. His 143 career point-after-touchdown kicks are second in Big South history, while his 245 career points are third on the League’s all-time kick scoring chart. HE ALMOST WENT ALL THE WAY At Georgia Tech in Week 2, Presbyterian College freshman DB BRANDON LESTON returned a fumble 91 yards for the Blue Hose, the second-longest fumble return in Big South history. The Conference record is a 99-yard return for a score set by Liberty’s RANDALL STATE at Akron on Oct. 12, 2002.

WAS THAT A NINER I JUST HEARD? Gardner-Webb TE SETH CRANFILL had nine receptions this past Saturday against Samford, establishing a Big South single-game record for most catches by a tight end. HE’S JUST PAT Liberty WR PAT KELLY surpassed 100 career receptions this past Saturday at Montana, becoming the 22nd player in Big South history to reach the milestone. He had 14 catches against the Grizzlies -- tied for second-most in a single-game in League annals. Kelly now has 109 career catches, tied with current Stony Brook WR JORDAN GUSH and former VMI wideout GARY PRICE for 17th all-time in the Conference record books. DURAN DURAN Coastal Carolina TE DAVID DURAN became the first tight end in Big South history with 60 career receptions when he reached the benchmark in Week 1. His two catches against North Carolina A&T broke the Conference tight end career record of 59 that was set by Gardner-Webb’s JOSH MILLER from 2007-10. Duran is already the Conference’s all-time leader for receiving yards by a tight end with 823. POLL POSITION Stony Brook is ranked No. 20 this week in both the FCS Coaches poll and The Sports Network national ranking. It is the third-straight year that a Big South member has been ranked the first four weeks of the regular-season (including preseason). THREE’S COMPANY Coastal Carolina DB DONTAVAIS JOHNSON had three interceptions in the season opener against North Carolina A&T, the seventh player in Big South history with this trifecta and first since Charleston Southern’s CHARLES JAMES had three picks at Liberty on Oct. 9, 2010. Johnson is the third Coastal player with three INTs in one game, joining MARRIO NORMAN (Oct. 20, 2007 vs. Presbyterian) and JOSH NORMAN (Nov. 7, 2009 vs. Gardner-Webb). BIG SOUTH’S TV PACKAGE IS ITS LARGEST EVER, NEW “GAME OF THE WEEK” ON ESPN3 The Big South Conference will have its largest football TV package ever in 2012, as a League-record 27 games will be televised this season. Overall, the Big South will appear on television every week of the season for the first time in the League’s 11-year football history, and will also have a “Game of the Week” carried on ESPN3 during all seven weeks of the Conference season for the first time. The Big South’s Conference TV slate features seven games on ESPN3 and an additional two on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN). MASTRO OF THE UNIVERSE Coastal Carolina junior NICCOLO MASTROMATTEO is the Big South’s career leader for punt returns with 51, having become the all-time leader as a sophomore. The previous career mark was 43, set by Liberty’s WYNTON JACKSON (2003-07). Mastromatteo is third in League annals with 390 career punt return yards, 135 yards away from Jackson’s Big South mark of 525. Meanwhile, Mastromatteo is third in Big South history with 98 combined kick returns in his career (47 KR, 51 PR), and two away from becoming the third player with 100 combined kickoff/punt returns. STONY BROOK’S MIGUEL MAYSONET ON PAYTON AWARD WATCH LIST For the sixth time since 2006, the Big South Conference has an official candidate for the top offensive individual honor in FCS. Stony Brook RB and reigning Big South Offensive Player of the Year MIGUEL MAYSONET is among the 20 initial candidates for the 2012 Walter Payton Award. Maysonet is just the second Big South running back to make the list, joining former Liberty rusher and current Jacksonville Jaguar RASHAD JENNINGS, who finished 8th in the voting in 2008. STONY BROOK SETS BIG SOUTH RECORD FOR MOST POINTS IN A GAME Stony Brook scored a Big South single-game record 77 points in Week 2 in defeating Pace, 77-7. The Seawolves bested their previous Big South record of 76 points, set last season at Gardner-Webb on Nov. 12. Stony Brook is the second Big South member with two 70-point games in League history, joining Coastal Carolina. Meanwhile, Stony Brook’s 70-point win over the Setters is the largest margin of victory in the Conference record books, as is its 10.66 yards per play (693 yards on 65 plays). WORKING OVERTIME Coastal Carolina played its fourth-ever multiple-overtime contest in Week 2 against Furman, its third going to at least three overtimes -- the most by a Big South member. Coastal played a record five overtimes against Towson in 2010 and played its first triple-overtime contest in 2005 at Liberty. The Chanticleers have played seven overtime games in its history, going 4-3.
