SERIES NOTES – The Raiders and Great Danes are meeting for the 20th time since the first game in 1974. Colgate is 14-5 all-time against Albany and has won the past 13 meetings. The Raiders and Great Danes last faced off in 2001, with Colgate triumphing 14-6 in Albany. Four of the previous 19 matchups have gone into overtime.
Tale of the Tape
LAST TIME OUT – Fourth-ranked Navy jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as it upended Colgate, 15-10. William Wallace and Basil Daratsos both had four goals for the Midshipmen, while sophomore Kevin Colleluori had a career-high five goals for the Raiders. Colgate got a goal and two assists from sophomore Brandon Corp, senior Brendan Hurley, and junior Matt Lalli. Ian Dingman had three goals and an assist for Navy, while Billy Looney added three helpers and one goal. Navy jumped all over the Raiders in the opening minutes of the first quarter. They went ahead 3-0 just 2:39 into the game. Colgate would cut the lead to three goals but could not get any closer as Navy’s high-powered offense always found a way to score. Navy outshot the Raiders 54-34 for the game and edged Colgate in groundballs 39-34. The Raiders won 15 faceoffs, while the Mids captured 14 for the game. In goal, freshman Tim Harrington played the majority of the game, making a career-high 13 saves. Sophomore Brian Cain made two stops in 16:25 of action. Colin Finnegan made 12 saves for the Midshipmen.

Sophomore Kevin Colleluori also has 14 tallies to his name and 16 points overall, while senior Jeff Hiller has seven goals and nine helpers for 16 points. Hurley and Colleluori also lead the team with four man-up goals apiece. Numerous players have taken their chances at the faceoff X this season. Sophomore Mark Florian has taken the majority of the draws with a 39-65 (.600) record. Will Planer is 17-34 (.500) and Brian McGowan is 16-18 (.889). Senior Chris Eck is 14-28 (.500) after missing much of the first six games to injury. He was 12-23 (.522) against No. 4 Navy. Senior Colin Hulme and Colleluori lead the team with 25 groundballs apiece. Hulme anchors a defense that is allowing 8.14 goals per game. In goal sophomore Brian Cain and freshman Tim Harrington are splitting time. Cain is 2-1 overall with a 5.42 goals against average and a .575 save percentage. Harrington is 2-2 on the season and has a 9.49 goals against average and a .441 save percentage. His losses came against then No. 4 Cornell and No. 4 Navy.
SCOUTING THE GREAT DANES – Albany heads into the midweek contest as one of four Division I teams still undefeated. The Great Danes moved to 6-0 with a 16-4 win over America at Colgate: Colgate leads 7-2 East opponent Hartford. Albany is ranked No. at Albany: Colgate leads 7-3 2 in the USILA Coaches Poll and No. 4 in the Longest Colgate Win Streak: 13 (1980-2001) Nike/Inside Lacrosse Poll. Frank Resetarits leads Longest Albany Win Streak: 3 (1977-79) the offense with 24 points off of a team-high 16 goals and eight assists. Merrick Thompson has amassed 16 points from 13 scores and three helpers, while Derek Dale has 15 points. Jordan Levine and Mike Ammann have 12 and 10 points, respectively. Levine also leads the team in groundballs with 26. Dan Barnes is the Great Danes’ top faceoff man with a 63-130 (.485) record at the “X”. In goal, junior Brett Queener has been outstanding, sporting a 6-0 record with a 4.77 goals against average and a .700 save percentage. He also is second on the team in groundballs with 22. Queener also registered a goal in Albany’s 10-9 overtime victory over UMass. Levine, Queener, Resetarits, and Thompson all were named to the Preseason Tewaaraton Trophy Watchlist. The Tewaaraton Trophy is awarded to the top men’s lacrosse player in the nation, regardless of division. IN COMMON – The Raiders and Great Danes share just one common opponent so far this season. Both squads earned resounding victories over Hartford. Colgate opened 2007 with a 19-4 victory over Hartford, while Albany dispatched the Hawks 16-4 over the weekend. The Raiders held Hartford to just 12 shots on the day and to just one goal in the first 51:19 of the game. Hartford went 11-24 at the “X” against Albany and just 4-25 against Colgate. NATIONAL RANKINGS – Colgate is ranked in the top-20 in four of the team categories tracked by the NCAA and one individual category through games on March 25. The Raiders are tops in the country in both man-up offense and third in man-down defense. Colgate sports a 73.1 success percentage on man-up opportunities and has allowed just three man-down goals on 20 opportunities. Colgate also is ranked 11th in scoring offense (11.0 g/gm), 12th in scoring margin (2.86) and faceoff win percentage (.572). Individually, junior Matt Lalli leads the Raiders on the list, ranking seventh in assists per game (2.0 a/gm). He also ranks 26th in points per game (3.29).

IRRESISTIBLE FORCE MEETS IMMOVABLE OBJECT – Colgate’s defense has been solid this season and is only allowing 8.14 goals per game. Albany on the opposite side ranks third in scoring offense with 13.6 goals per game. FAB FIVE – Three players have scored five points at least once this season for the Raiders. Sophomore Kevin Colleluori registered five goals against No. 4 Navy. He is one of three players in the Patriot League to record five goals in a game. Senior Jeff Hiller and junior Matt Lalli both tallied five points apiece against both Hartford and Canisius. Lalli also had five points in the win over Holy Cross. BAD HOSTS – Colgate has not been kind to its visitors during head coach Jim Nagle’s tenure here at Colgate. The Raiders are 26-11 on their home turf since 2002, including an 8-2 record in 2006. Colgate has outscored its opponents 401-270 in Hamilton during that span. TOP BOSS – Colgate University head coach Jim Nagle is beginning his sixth season at the helm of the Colgate lacrosse program. He sports a 45-35 record and is 110-74 in his 10 seasons as a head coach. His 45 victories is the second most by a Colgate men’s lacrosse coach, while his .563 win percentage at Colgate is fourth. Harvey Potter has the most wins with 80 victories, while Michael Toop (1988-91) has the best win percentage at .708 (34-14). STREAKING – Junior Matt Lalli is riding a 15-game scoring streak, dating back to March 28, 2006. The last time Lalli was held without a point was at Army on March 25, 2006. That streak ranks 22nd in Division I lacrosse. Since then he has posted at least one point in all 15 contests. He has been held without a point just two times in his career and has tallied 31 multiple-point games in his career. Kevin Ross of Canisius leads the nation with a 40-game scoring streak, dating back to March 20, 2004. ROAD WOES – The matchup with Albany is the fourth for the Raiders away from Tyler’s Field. Colgate is 0-2 on opponents’ home fields and 0-1 at a neutral site. Colgate has played at No. 1 Cornell and No. 4 Navy, and met Penn State on neutral ground at Georgetown Prep. UP AHEAD – Colgate continues its tough stretch. The Raiders just faced off against No. 4 Navy and will host No. 8/13 Army on March 31. CLIMBING THE CHARTS – Senior Brendan Hurley and junior Matt Lalli continue to climb their way up the career charts. Hurley has 68 career goals to his name for eighth on the alltime list. Lalli has registered 55 career assists, which puts him in sole possession of the No. 6 spot on the list. He needs 10 more to pass Carl Calnero for the fifth spot. Lalli also has 56 goals for his career, needing just one to climb into the top 10. His 111 career points is 10 shy of the No. 10 spot. CENTURY MEN – Speaking of Hurley and Lalli climbing the charts. Lalli recently became a member of the century point club and has 111 career points. Hurley captured his 100th point with three points at No. 4 Navy. He has 68 goals and 32 assists for his career. THAT’S SPECIAL – Colgate’s special teams have been outstanding this season. The Raiders are tops in the Patriot League in both the extraman opportunities and man-down defense. The Raiders surrendered three extra man goals against the Midshipmen. The Raiders went a span of 379:54, which comes out to six hours, 19 minutes and 54 seconds. TOUGH RIDE – The Colgate ride has been tough for opponents to beat this season. The Raiders are holding their opponents to just 60.4 clearing percentage for the season. LEAGUE RANKINGS – Colgate is either first or second in 13 of the team categories the league tracks. The Raiders are tops in assists (6.86/gm), man-up scoring percentage (.731), penalty killing percentage (.850), man-up goals (19), man-down goals (2), penalties (3.00/gm), penalty minutes (2.50/gm), and shot percentage (.316). Colgate is second to Navy in goals (11.00/gm), groundballs (36.71/gm), points (17.86/gm), faceoff percentage (.572), and shots on goal (22.86/gm). INDIVIDUALLY– Colgate features at least one individual among the top three players in five categories tracked by the league. Junior Matt Lalli is second in assists (14) and points (23), while senior Colin Hulme and sophomore Kevin Colleluori rank second in groundballs (25). Colleluori and senior Brendan Hurley are second in man-up goals (4) and third in total goals (14). Senior Jeff Hiller’s nine assists is third in the conference. Lalli and Hurley are just two of four Patriot League players to have tallied a man-down goal this season. FAST STARTERS – Colgate has been dominant this season in the first and second quarters. The Raiders are outscoring their opponents 47-20 in the first two periods combined. Colgate has a 24-10 advantage in the first and a 23-10 edge in the second session. The Raiders are being outscored 37-30 in the final two quarters combined. TEAM BESTS – Colgate has posted three top performances in the Patriot League this season. The Raiders’ 31 points, 19 goals, and 12 assists, against Hartford all rank first in the league. PRESEASON PRAISE – Colgate collected a host of preseason awards after its strong 2006 season. Seniors Colin Hulme and Chris Eck both were named preseason All-Americans by Inside Lacrosse magazine. Colgate and Navy were the only two Patriot League schools represented on the list. Hulme, junior Matt Lalli, and sophomore Brandon Corp also captured spots on Face-Off Yearbook’s preseason all-Patriot League team. Face-Off Yearbook also picked Colgate to finish second in the Patriot League this season. FIRST-YEAR FIRSTS Four rookies have registered at least one point so far this season. James Yetter and Andrew Parietti both posted a goal and an assist in their collegiate debut against Hartford. Conor Smith also had a goal in the season opener. Ian Murphy registered his first career goals with two against Sacred Heart. Freshman goaltender Tim Harrington made his first save in 15 minutes of action against Hartford and earned the first win of his career against Sacred Heart. PRESEASON POLL – The Patriot League’s coaches and sports information directors picked Colgate to finish second this season after earning a share of the regular season title in 2006. The Raiders earned 59 points and two first-place votes, while Navy took the top spot with 72 votes and 12 first-place votes. Army was picked third, and Bucknell and Lehigh round out the top five, respectively. RAIDER REWARDS – Senior Jeff Hiller earned the first weekly award of his career as the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 19. Hiller tallied three goals and two assists in the win over Hartford. It was his first multiple-goal game of his career. FORMIDABLE FOES – The Raiders’ schedule this season features a host of tough opponents. Colgate has already faced current No. 1 Cornell and No. 4/3 Navy. GAME 1 Colgate 19 Hartford 4 Sun., Feb. 18, 2007 Tyler’s Field Hamilton, N.Y. HAMILTON, N.Y. —Colgate got goals from 12 different players and went 5-for-5 on extra man opportunities to earn a, 19-4, season-opening victory over Hartford. Senior Jeff Hiller and junior Matt Lalli led the way for Colgate with five points apiece. Hiller tallied three goals and two assists, while Lalli contributed two goals and three assists in the win. Senior Brendan Hurley also notched a hat trick. The Raiders jumped all over the Hawks in the early going, scoring four unanswered goals in the first 7:43. Colgate continued to find the back of the net as it headed into the first break up 8-1. Hiller and Lalli had a hand in five of the eight first quarter scores. Hartford stopped the run at the 7:06 mark with an unassisted tally from Jason Whitehouse. The Raider defense continued to stifle Hartford and the Raider offense capitalized on its chances over the next three quarters. Colgate scored 11 unanswered goals to go in front 19-1 with 8:41 left in the fourth quarter. Ten different players scored for the Raiders during that stretch. The Hawks fired home three unanswered goals from three different players to close out the game. Brian Tilley, Rob Steffens, and Bill Dean all joined Whitehouse in the goal-scoring column, while Bryan Hale and Tom Harris provided an assist apiece. Colgate got three-point performances on the afternoon from junior Josh Back with two goals and an assist and sophomore Nick Monastero with a goal and two helpers. GAME 2 Colgate 14 Sacred Heart 5 Sat., Feb. 24, 2007 Tyler’s Field Hamilton, N.Y. HAMILTON, N.Y.—Colgate sophomore Brandon Corp tallied a game-high three goals and three other players added two scores as the Raiders dropped visiting Sacred Heart, 14-5. Colgate held the Pioneers scoreless for the opening 41:03. Senior Jeff Hiller added three points with two goals and an assist, while junior Matt Lalli and sophomore Nick Monastero both finished the afternoon with three points on a goal and two helpers. Sophomore Kevin Colleluori and freshman Ian Murphy both had two scores for the Raiders. Corp got the scoring started with an unassisted goal at the 8:36 mark and Colleluori got on the board 50 seconds later. Corp made it a 3-0 game with 6:05 remaining in the first quarter with the first of Colgate’s three manup goals. Monastero provided the assist on the goal. The Raider offense continued to flourish as it piled on six unanswered goals for a 9-0 lead at halftime. Coming out of the break, Colgate added four more goals from four different players to stretch its lead to 13-0 with 5:01 remaining in the third quarter. The Pioneers finally broke through the Raider defense with 2:57 left in the quarter when Bobby Karl beat the Colgate goalie for an unassisted tally. Corp answered for Colgate 2:19 into the fourth quarter off an assist from Monastero to make it a 15-1 game. Sacred Heart got a scoring flurry down the stretch, notching four unanswered to close out the contest. Bobby Rushton started the run at the 6:10 mark with an unassisted goal and Sacred Heart added scores from Evan Morgan, Michael Collins, and Joe Cavagnaro in the final three minutes All four of Colgate’s goaltenders saw action in the contest. HAMILTON, N.Y.—Cornell senior Eric Pittard registered a game-high four goals and two assists to lead the fourth-ranked Big Red to a 16-6 victory over visiting Colgate. Senior Brendan Hurley and sophomore Kevin Colleluori led the Raiders with two goals apiece. Cornell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the first half with goals from Eric Pittard and David Mitchell. Pittard took a Rocco Romero pass and fired home a shot at the 11:58 mark. Mitchell got on the board after a groundball by John Glynn with 5:13 remaining in the quarter. Colgate’s Ian Murphy put the Raiders in the scoring column with a shot past Matt McMonagle. Sophomore Brandon Corp registered a score 33 seconds later to even the score at 2-2. The Raiders struck first in the second quarter as Colleluori gave Colgate its only lead of the game with 11:47 on the clock. Cornell answered with four unanswered goals in a 10-minute span to head into the break in front 6-3. The Big Red pushed its lead to 8-3 with a pair of goals in the opening 2:44 of the third quarter. Hurley stopped the run for the Raiders with Colgate’s first goal since the 11:47 mark of the second quarter, a scoreless drought of 16:18 for the Raiders. Cornell responded with four consecutive goals to put the game out of reach at 12-4. Colleluori notched his second goal of the contest to make it 12-5, but the Big Red ended the period with a Schmicker tally for a 13-5 lead heading into the fourth stanza. Hurley scored for the Raiders just 25 seconds into the fourth-quarter, but Cornell scored 1:10 later and closed out the game with a pair of goals to earn the 16-6 victory. GAME 4 Colgate 13 Canisius 6 Sat., March 3, 2007 Tyler’s Field Hamilton, N.Y. HAMILTON, N.Y.—Colgate jumped out to an 8-0 lead and cruised to a 13-6 victory over visiting Canisius. Jeff Hiller and Matt Lalli both led the way with five points. Hiller had one goal and four assists, while Lalli scored twice and provided three helpers. Senior Brendan Hurley registered a hat trick, while three other players had two points. Canisius’ Kevin Ross led all scorers with three goals and three assists for six points. Three other players tallied goals for the Golden Griffins. The Raiders won the opening faceoff and got one shot off before Hurley tallied the first goal just 1:24 into the game. Sophomore Brandon Corp provided the assist on the score. Two minutes later it was Hiller hooking up with Lalli on an extra-man opportunity. Lalli fired the ball home for his fourth goal of the season. Colgate got four more goals from three different players over the next 8:43 to head into the first break up 6-0. Sophomore Kevin Colleluori and junior Jon Freeberg both added scores in the second quarter before Canisius’ Michael Blocho stopped the run with two minutes remaining until halftime. The Raiders and Griffins traded goals to end the third quarter with Colgate in front 10-3. Lalli tallied his second man-up goal of the game to start the fourth quarter before Canisius put together three unanswered goals to make it an 11-6 game. GAME 5 Colgate 11 Holy Cross 4 Sat., March 10, 2007 Tyler’s Field Hamilton, N.Y. HAMILTON, N.Y.—Colgate senior Brendan Hurley scored a career-high tying four goals to lead the Raiders to an 11-4 win over Holy Cross. Hurley had a man-down, man-up, and two even-man tallies in the contest. Colgate jumped out to a 7-0 halftime lead in dominating fashion and held off of the streaking Crusaders to score an 11-4 victory. Junior Matt Lalli added three goals and two assists for a game-high five points, while sophomore Kevin Colleluori had two goals and an assist. It was all Raiders in the opening two quarters. Colgate never let the Crusaders get an offensive rhythm, holding them to just 1-of-6 on clear attempts in the first quarter and 4-of-13 for the first half total. The Raiders also dominated the restarts, winning 17of-18 at the X for the game. Colleluori got the scoring started for the Raiders 3:48 into the first session with an assist from Joshua Back. Four minutes later Lalli took a Brandon Corp pass for a 2-0 lead. Hurley registered his first goal of the contest at the 2:24 mark of the first period when he fired home a shot over the right shoulder of the Holy Cross goaltender for a man-down goal. Hurley scored two more and Jeff Hiller and Colleluori added a tally in the second quarter to make it 7-0 at halftime. Holy Cross came out of the break and scored four unanswered goals in the third quarter. Grant Cowherd started the scoring for Holy Cross just 1:02 in the period and Paul LeBlanc added another goal 4:35 later. Cowherd and Tim Redmond rounded out the scoring for the Crusaders. Colgate responded with four unanswered in the fourth for the 11-4 win. Sophomore Mark Florian had a strong outing at the faceoff X, winning a career-high 12-of-13. GAME 6 Penn State 7 Colgate 4 Sat., March 13, 2007 Georgetown Prep North Bethesda, Md. NORTH BETHESDA, Md.—Penn State’s Brian Shea scored three goals to lead the Nittany Lions to a 7-4 victory over Colgate at Georgetown Prep. The Raiders were led by sophomore Brandon Corp’s three goals. The Nittany Lions controlled play throughout much of the first 20 minutes. Shea put Penn State on the board first just 2:41 into the contest. Pat Heim added another tally six minutes later to put PSU in front 2-0 after the first frame. Penn State doubled the score to 4-0 in the opening six minutes of the second session before Colgate was able to get its offense going. Corp fired in a low shot at the net that Penn State goalie Drew Adams was able to get a stick on. The ball bounded out of his crosse and fell into the goal to make it a 4-1 game. Two minutes later Corp took a pass from Matt Lalli and fired it high into the left corner of the cage to make it a two-goal game. The Raiders continued to hold the Penn State offense in check in the quarter, forcing a pushing penalty with 2:05 remaining in the third quarter. Sophomore Kevin Colleluori sent a pass from behind the cage to a streaking Nick Monastero who just touched it into the back of the net for a man-up score. Coming out of the break ahead by one goal at 4-3, Shea gave PSU a two-goal cushion once again with his third goal of the day. Corp responded with his second tally in the contest to make it 5-4 with 5:51 in the third period. The two teams tightened up defensively in the final 20 minutes as Penn State pulled away with two unanswered goals in the fourth quarter. The Nittany Lions controlled the faceoffs, winning 10-of-15 restarts. The two squads tied for 33 groundballs apiece, while PSU held a 28-20 advantage on shots. Annapolis, Md. ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Fourth-ranked Navy jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as it upended Colgate, 15-10. William Wallace and Basil Daratsos both had four goals for the Midshipmen, while sophomore Kevin Colleluori had a game-high five goals for the Raiders. The Raiders got a goal and two assists from sophomore Brandon Corp, senior Brendan Hurley, and junior Matt Lalli. Ian Dingman had three goals and an assist for Navy, while Billy Looney added three helpers and one goal. Navy jumped all over the Raiders going ahead 3-0 in the first 2:39 of the game with two goals from Daratsos. Navy added two more goals six seconds apart later in the quarter for a 5-0 lead after the first. The Raiders came out of the break looking to make a run of their own. William Wallace put the Mids in front 6-0, but Colgate junior Josh Back stopped the run two minutes later when he sent a shot into the lower left corner of the net. Nick Monastero added a score 57 seconds later with an assist from Jeff Hiller. Colleluori made it a three-goal game two minutes later. Ian Dingman put Navy up by four again, 7-3, at the 5:02 mark. Wallace and Billy Looney hooked up 1:25 later with a man-up goal to go in front, 8-3. Corp fired a pass from behind the cage to Hurley who whipped the ball into the back of the net. That would be as close as the Raiders could get as Navy scored four unanswered to start the third quarter and headed into the final period with a 13-6 advantage. The Raiders scored three of the first four goals in the fourth session, but it was too little too late. In goal, Tim Harrington played the majority of the game, making a career-high 13 saves.
