CONFERENCE USA CHAMPIONSHIP For the second-straight year, Memphis earned a victory to open the Conference USA Championship. The ninth seeded Tigers held off No. 8 UAB, 8-6, in Houston, Texas. Sophomore Leigh Rowan led the U of M with a 3-for-4 performance, including a three-run homer in the third inning. Freshman Kailey Kassner also had two RBI in the game, including a solo home run in the second inning. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Tigers, which tied a program record. Memphis compiled 14 hits in the game with eight of nine starters recording a hit and eight different players scoring a run. It was the eighth time in 2008 Memphis reached the 10 hit mark. The Memphis softball season came to an end with a 9-1 defeat to No. 9/11 Houston later that day in the C-USA Championship. The Tigers were within two runs of the Cougars until a six run sixth inning gave Houston the run rule victory. Two UH home runs accounted for the first seven runs with five of the scoring players reaching on walks. The Tigers ended the year 0-8 against teams ranked in the national top 25. TIGERS SET NEW HOME RUN RECORD The Tigers totaled 48 dingers in 2008 for a 0.89 average per game. The total set a new program record, surpassing the 2007 total of 47. Memphis hit at least three home runs in two of the four games during week three in 2008 and did it five times this season. The Tigers hit a program record four home runs against Alabama A&M with four different players going yard. The team then equaled the feat against the Bulldogs on the road. The U of M finished the season ranked third in the conference in home runs. Memphis also set a program record in triples with five. BOSSOM LEADS C-USA IN FEWEST HOMERS ALLOWED Freshman Kimber Bossom tied for the C-USA lead in fewest home runs allowed with four. The

Before the streak ended, the last home run off her came on March 5 against Central Arkansas. Bossom totaled four shutouts on the season in 155.1 innings pitched with 109 strikeouts. It is the fifth no hitter in Memphis history and first since Jenna Kubesch threw one against Alcorn State last season. Bossom struck out a career high eight batters in the game. TIGERS TAKE SILVER The Tigers were the Silver Division winner at the Winthrop/adidas Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. Memphis went 3-1 in the tournament earning victories against Gardner Webb, Vermont and Furman and allowed only two hits in each of those games. Freshman pitcher Kimber Bossom and senior center fielder Lindsay Kelso were both named to the all-tournament team.
