OPENING BELL Gettysburg looks to end the regular season on a high note against USMMA and Stevens today in Bream. The Bullets face the Ducks to start the day, with the Mariners grappling with Johns Hopkins on the other mat. Gettysburg will then tackle Merchant Marine with Stevens and Hopkins squaring off. Gettysburg already faced Johns Hopkins this season, dropping a 28-22 decision.

CLASH OF THE TITANS Three of the conference’s top heavyweights will battle today when Gettysburg’s Bobby Christopher tangles with Stevens’ James Roarty and Merchant Marine’s Judd Connell. All three placed at last year’s CC Championships with Connell taking second, Christopher third, and Roarty fourth. In head-to-head meetings, Christopher is 3-2 against Roarty and 3-1 against Connell.

THE SERIES The Orange and Blue is 8-7 against Merchant Marine, but hasn’t won a match with the Mariners since 1976. Gettysburg won the first meeting with Stevens 27-21 in 2007, but the Ducks have taken each of the last two matches decisively.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS...  Merchant Marine is the defending CC champ and entered the weekend ranked 13th in the latest NWCA national poll. The Mariners have won their last six dual matches and are undefeated in the league. Justin Diesel (8th) and Eric Vincent (10th) are each nationally-ranked at 174 and 197, respectively. Diesel (21-7), Vincent (22-3), and Dan Twito (26-6) have each managed over 20 victories on the year.

LAST MEETING In a tri-match with USMMA and Stevens last season, Andrew Goldstein ’09 and Bobby Christopher each won a pair of bouts at 157 and heavyweight, respectively. Goldstein posted a pin and a decision, while Christopher turned in a pair of one-point victories over James Roarty (3-2) and Judd Connell (5-4). Abe Evans also earned a win on the day with a 9-1 major decision against Stevens. LAST TIME OUT The Bullets last took the mats against McDaniel on Feb. 3 and dropped a 29-12 decision. Abe Evans, Joe Fiore, Timothy Zielinski, and DJ Neri each earned decisions at 125, 157, 165, and 174, respectively, for Gettysburg.

2009-10 wrestling

 Stevens has dropped four of its last five matches against the top three teams in the CC (USMMA, McDaniel, Ursinus) and nationally-ranked Cortland. The Ducks nearly tamed the Dragons with four-straight wins from 157 to 184 before dropping the final two bouts. Joey Favia is the team’s top grappler with a 20-4 record at 165, while Bobby Bishop is 18-7 and has won five-straight at 174.  Johns Hopkins hasn’t wrestled since Jan. 23 when it scored wins over Gettysburg (28-22) and Muhlenberg (38-9). Eric Levenseller has been the Blue Jays’ top grappler, winning his last nine matches at 165. He leads the team with an 18-7 record. Paul Marcello is second on the team with 13 wins at 133.
