Metro State Adds 11 Baseball Players DENVER, Colo. - Metro State head coach Tom Carcione announced the addition of 11 student-athletes for the upcoming 2010 baseball on Friday. The players were signed while former head coach Jerry Schemmel was still with the program as Carcione was hired earlier in July. The Roadrunners added five freshmen and six transfers to fill out the class. All 11 players are either natives of Colorado or played at a junior college in Colorado. Freshmen Cameron Brown (Denver, Colo.), Cody Hagen (Littleton, Colo.), Taylor Huyett (Broomfield, Colo.), Sean Reeves (Arvada, Colo.) and Anthony Sylvester (Morrison, Colo.) will join transfers Evan Claus (Albuquerque, N.M.), David Fox (Lakewood, Colo.), David Kaplan (Colorado Springs), Zach Krueger (Holyoke, Colo.), Bradshaw Perry (Aurora, Colo.) and Nate Van Bibber (Littleton, Colo.). Carcione added three pitchers in Van Bibber, Huyett and Perry. Perry and Kaplan can play middle infield positions, while Reeves plays third base and Claus is a first baseman. Fox, Hagen and Krueger are all outfielders and Brown can play both infield and outfield. Sylvester will be a catcher at Metro State. Brown is the younger brother of current Roadrunners outfielder Brennan Brown. Cameron Brown was a 2009 graduate of Legacy High School where he was a named honorable mention all-conference as a senior. An outstanding all-around athlete, Brown was an all-state football player as a cornerback and broke Legacy’s school record with eight interceptions last fall. Hagen, a 6-foot-4 outfielder, was a first team all-conference player at Columbine High School this spring. He batted .524 with 13 home runs, 43 runs batted in and eight stolen bases. While playing for the Colorado Rockies Scout Team in the summer, he was coached by Metro State assistant coach Daven Bond. Huyett was a teammate of Brown at Legacy High School where he was a four-year letterwinner. He missed much of this spring with a lower-body injury, but the left-handed pitcher should be ready this fall. He also played for the Colorado Rockies Scout Team for Metro State assistant Bret Williamson. Reeves was named to the Colorado Dugout Club’s all-state team this spring while at Ralston Valley High School. Also a second team all-conference honoree, Reeves batted .340 with five home runs and 29 RBI after hitting .360 as a junior. He led Ralston Valley to the Class 4A state championship as a junior and to the state tournament once again as a senior. Sylvester rounds out the incoming freshman after graduating from D’Evelyn High School this spring. The four-year starting catcher at D’Evelyn was named second team all-conference this spring and batted .383 with six home runs, 23 doubles 48 runs batted in and 21 stolen bases in his four-year career. Sylvester is also an excellent student, twice being named academic all-state. Claus, Kaplan, Krueger and Perry all come to the Roadrunners from Lamar Community College in Lamar, Colo. Claus is a 6-foot-4 first baseman and redshirted this spring, but hit .279 with three home runs, six doubles, two triples and 21 runs batted in last year as a freshman in the wooden bat junior college league. Kaplan was an infielder at Lamar C.C. and hit .303 with six doubles and two home runs this spring. He added 24 runs scored, 14 RBI and stole three bases. Those numbers are up from a .278 average as a freshman. While at Doherty High School in Colorado Springs, Kaplan batted over .400 each of his final three years as the starting shortstop, including .426 as a senior when he scored 27 runs and stole 12 bases. He graduated with a 4.00 GPA and as a member of the National Honor Society. Krueger led Lamar C.C. this spring with a .384 batting average, 43 RBI and seven home runs. He also hit 10 doubles and stole 15 bases. He was named all-region as a centerfielder. Krueger hit .330 with two home runs as a freshman. At Holyoke High School he was named all-state in baseball, football and basketball. Perry looks to split time between the mound and shortstop with the Roadrunners after playing both positions at Lamar. At the plate, he hit .268 with a team-high 16 doubles, five home runs and 33 RBI this spring. On the mound, he was the team’s closer, netting five saves in 15 appearances out of the bullpen. He posted the second-best ERA on the staff at 3.00 in 24 innings and struck out 33 batters, while walking just five. He may move to the starting rotation at Metro State. Fox is a transfer from Trinidad State Junior College, also a member of the wooden bat junior college conference in Colorado. This spring, Fox batted .366 with 22 doubles, nine home runs, 48 RBI and five stolen bases. He was named all-conference both years at Trinidad State. At Faith Christian High School as a 2007 senior, he was named all-state and the Class 3A Player of the Year. Van Bibber rounds out the recruiting class. He 6-foot-3, 215-pound righthander brings good size to the mound from Garden City Community College. He struck out 28 batters in 28.1 innings this spring, but had an 11.44 ERA. In high school at Douglas County High School, he was named honorable mention all-conference as a senior. Carcione may add a couple more players before school begins in mid-August.
