2011 Morristown National Little League
60th Annual Awards Celebration Madison Hotel September 30th 2011
A special thanks to all of our volunteers, parents, sponsors, umpires and the children who have helped make Morristown National Little League (MNLL) a constant for 60 years.
“The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. Its been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But, baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and could be again. Oh…people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.”
Terence Mann (James Earl Jones) Field of Dreams (1989)
President’s Message Parents, Players, Managers, Coaches and Volunteers: What a great 60th anniversary Morristown National Little League celebrated this year. From opening day ceremonies with our class of ‘51 alumni, to our Challenger games and the Roberto’s Kids fundraiser, the cross-over games at Morristown American, to our successful All-Star programs, this year proved to be outstanding. The success of this year and all of our prior years are the result of the hard work and dedication of the parents, children, volunteers, managers, coaches, sponsors, and Board members of Morristown National Little League. Having been involved in Morristown National Little League these past eight years, the one thing that stands out above all in this program is the great sense of community and kindness that is demonstrated on these beautiful fields that we are fortunate to be able to play on thanks to Morristown and Morris Township. The beauty of watching our children playing together and supporting and encouraging each other as a team, along with hard work, practice and competition is what, I believe, makes this game so special. As these young men and ladies move on in life, I hope the experiences they have enjoyed while playing for Morristown National Little League provides them with great memories of the Spring and Summer of 2011. Best of luck to our graduating players, and thank you for providing us with great memories throughout the years of watching you play the game. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank you for a fantastic year, and I look forward to another great year in 2012. Joseph D. Sullivan, President Morristown National Little League
“You see, you spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball, and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time.” Jim Bouton, Ball Four, 1970

MNLL 60th Anniversary Opening Day Opening day for youth baseball and softball in Morristown – this past Saturday, April 16 – felt more like early March than mid-April. The air was cold, and the sun – what there was of it – wasn’t much help, either, when two dozen teams from Morristown and the Township gathered at Burnham Park for the start of the season. Kids and coaches stood shuffling their feet and rubbing their hands together to keep warm, as the announcer thanked them all, and thanked the parents and volunteers who help make youth baseball happen every season. The mayors of Morristown and Morris Township greeted everybody, too. 2011 is a special year; it’s the 60th anniversary of Little League ball in Morristown – and standing along the first-base line during the opening day ceremonies were a dozen or so of the guys who were on the first teams 60 years ago. They’d come from all over the United States to take part in this reunion: from as far away as Massachusetts and Virginia and North Carolina – and even from Nevada. Richard Derrick, the opening day pitcher in ‘51, threw out the ceremonial first pitch of the 2011 baseball season, just after young Nicole Rhoades threw out the (blistering!) first pitch of the softball season. The reunion of Morristown’s first Little Leaguers – 60 boys had made up the first 4 teams – had been partly Derrick’s idea; he and Morristown resident Ed Butera (who was sitting in Derrick’s dentist chair at the time of this brainstorm) decided to try contact their former teammates to see how many might be able to make the trip to Morristown to celebrate. They had to do some detective work and make dozens of phone calls to try to find men they hadn’t seen since High School – and sadly, they couldn’t reach everybody. But thirteen men agreed to come. And they stood where they’d stood those many years ago, and the memories came flooding back. Then 10-year-old Devon Colquhoun sang the heck out of the national anthem – the girl’s got some serious pipes! – and MC and MNLL President Joe Sullivan happily declared the season open with “the sweetest two words in the English language: ‘Play Ball!’” After that, Coach John Rhodes brought his Morristown Financial Group team – the team is a direct heir of the ‘51 Exchange Club teams – over to shake hands with the men of the ‘51 team. MFG was going play on the Burnham field that morning, and they asked the ‘51 guys to share in their pre-game team cheer. The men were touched and grateful, and two generations of baseball huddled and cheered together. The ‘51 guys told the MFG team: “Guys, keep the tradition going – we won it all!” Men and boys stood together on the field for a little while, enjoying the moment and one anothers’ company. Steve Hoskins of the ‘61 team said of the group cheer: “Wow – it made the day even more special than it already was!” Steve’s a lawyer who lives on Cape Cod now, but spent most of his life here in New Jersey. (You may know of his Mom, Barbara Hoskins, who was the Morristown Library’s historian for many years, and of his sister, Rebecca Hoskins, Director of Education at Fosterfields, right across the street from Burnham Park.) Steve talked about how the excitement of the newly-formed teams swept the town in 1951. “There wasn’t much for kids our age to do in those days, except for Boy Scouts. But pretty soon everybody got swept up in the excitement; the local papers covered the teams every day, and reported on them just as they would have the pros!” Two generations of baseball “It was right after World War II,” he continued, “and men were back from fighting, and going to school on the GI Bill or working. And most people didn’t have a TV yet, although that was about to change. Don’t forget, too, that 1951 was the year Bobby Thomson won the World Series for the New York Giants with ‘the shot heard ‘round the world.’” “There was just a lot of excitement for baseball then.” And baseball was, truly, a big part of these guys’ lives. Doc Glanville, a local dentist, coached one of the first teams that year; it’s no coincidence that Richard Derrick decided to become a dentist himself. The Morristown Little Leaguers got to the state finals that year, and lost to the West Orange club, who went on to the regional finals. Those first 60 boys, as they found out on Saturday, as men, have left behind them an ongoing legacy. (Picture top left: 1951 Championship Team; Picture top right: Opening Day 2011)

Morris County Challenger Little League 2011 Opening Day Hosting opening day for the Challenger League is a long standing MNLL tradition, these pictures tell the story of why the day is so important to everyone involved. The Challenger League is a baseball league for disabled children, that was established in 1986, by Williamsport Little League. Bergen and Union counties in New Jersey had instituted their Challenger League programs since 1989. The Morris County Challenger Little League was established in 1999. The dedicated volunteers create a positive environment for the children who are in need of this program.

The President’s Award is given to a volunteer who the President and the Board of Directors wish to recognize for their extraordinary and continued contributions to Morristown National Little League. This year we are proud to recognize and honor:
PRESIDENT AWARD PRESENTED TO SAM CHAMPI, JR. Sam Champi, Jr. has been a leader with the Morristown National Little League program for at least the past twenty years. Not only has he coached and managed baseball teams and managed Williamsport All-Star teams for boys’ baseball, Sam has also managed our All-Star girls’ softball teams and managed softball teams during the years. Sam’s dedication to the Morristown National Little League as a board member has also been extraordinary. Sam, not only provided a great deal of instruction to the kids but also to other managers and coaches in the league. The clinics he provided throughout the years helped new coaches become better coaches. Sam has also served as Vice-President on the Board of the Morristown National Little League for the past several years and has been instrumental in providing solid direction to the Board for many years. He has also been instrumental, with his wife Jill, in overseeing our concession stand, overseeing our Memorial Day festivities, as well as making sure that the Morristown National Little League remains one of the top programs in the State of New Jersey. I have witnessed a great Dad dedicated to his family and especially his kids, Cassidy and Chase, who have also been recognized with Morristown National Little League’s top honors. It is, therefore, with great honor, to present this award which recognizes Sam Champi Jr. for his achievement, dedication, and years of service to Morristown National Little League. Joseph D. Sullivan, President Morristown National Little League Previous President Awards presented to: Ed Villhauer (2006) Dave Olander (2007)
The President’s Award is given to a volunteer who the President and the Board of Directors wish to recognize for their extraordinary and continued contributions to Morristown National Little League. This year we are proud to recognize and honor:
PRESIDENT AWARD PRESENTED TO JAMES MAYNARD It is a great honor to provide James Maynard with this year’s award for his outstanding dedication and contribution to the Morristown National Little League girl’s softball program. Jim has been affiliated with and in essence, he has built the girl’s softball program for Morristown National Little League over the past ten years. Upon his daughters’ graduating the program, Jim remained and has been instrumental in developing the program to the point where the Morristown National Little League softball program is now recognized as one of the top programs in the State. Jim Maynard has served diligently on the Board of Directors for Morristown National Little League as well as been a volunteer, manager, and coach for various girls’ teams and All-Stars throughout the years. A former Gross Award winner and Cornine Award winner, he has dedicated an extraordinary amount of time to the program. We are all in great appreciation and hereby acknowledge Jim this year on our 60th anniversary. We have been so blessed to have such a fine man as a part of our program. We will miss his great wit and generosity to Morristown National Little League. Joseph D. Sullivan, President Morristown National Little League

Awards
The Lou Cornine Award This award acknowledges the contribution made by a manager or coach was established in memory of Lou Cornine, one of our most giving volunteers. It is presented annually to a manager or coach who has contributed significantly to the league. We proudly present the 2011 Lou Cornine Award to: John Long has been associated with Morristown National Little League since 2004, when his son, Brandon, started in Tee-ball. As Brandon grew, so did John's involvement with MNLL. John would help out at practices, prepare the field, coach one of the bases or do what was needed to keep the boys on the field and out of the dirt! He soon stepped up to take on a role as an assistant coach for coach-pitch, machine-pitch and then AAA. In 2009, John took over as the AAA Manager for Fairchild Fire Co., where he led a scrappy team to an unlikely Championship!
John Long
As the Majors called, John answered, not only as the manager of an expansion team but as the team's sponsor, J. Long Painting. A rough first year in the Majors was followed by a strong draft and the reward of a championship this year. The team's rally cry of "Paint 'em" still echoes in many ears!
John has not only been active as a coach and manager during the regular Little League season, he served on the MNLL Board as the Fall Ball Director. John also managed Fall Ball teams in 2008, 2009 and 2010. This year he was also a coach for the Rockaway "A" team. John has always had great passion for the game and demanded the same from his players. His pacing up and down, whether in the dugout or in the third base coaches' box, were a familiar sight to all who attended the games. His selection as this year's Lou Cornine Award winner is a reflection of the respect and admiration of his players, parents and fellow managers for his time and service to MNLL.

The Joe Gross Memorial Award It is with great pleasure that we present the 2011 Joe Gross Memorial Award to:
Mike Kuhns Mike came into this League as a player back in the early “80s; and, then returned seven years ago to volunteer as a coach and then manager at MNLL. Mike coached on Fairchild (2004) and the next year moved over to coach the Township team. Then in 2006, he stepped up to the Manager’s job in 2006 and where he has been the last five years. He also coached the 2006 10 Year Old All Stars (Williamsport) and then the extended summer baseball season in the Hanover Tournament. (MNLL won the championship in the bottom of the 8th). Getting parental volunteers is often difficult for Little League organizations like ours. This is one reason why we greatly appreciate former players sacrificing their time to lend a hand at MNLL. When they return and contribute for as many years as Mike has, we are truly fortunate, as we have been with Mike. Congratulations, Mike for all of your fine efforts and dedication to help our baseball players and the Morristown National Little League program.

The Jeannine Davis Award The Jeannine Davis award acknowledges the contributions made by the league’s women volunteers and was established in recognition of one of our most active mothers ever. The Jeannine Davis Award It is with great pleasure that we present the 2011 Jeannine Davis Award to:
Jill Champi Over the last four years, if there was a game at Burnham Park, there was Jill Champi - running the Upper Deck concession stand. Jill would always make sure that there were enough supplies, change and volunteers to provide the hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, popcorn, pretzels and soda to the players, fans and coaches. Jill would even be there waiting in the rain, just in case the game was played (or a coach forgot to call and tell her it was canceled). She also was very involved with making sure we had the required food and supplies for our annual MNLL Memorial Day picnic. Jill also added her own special touch to the routine "fare" offered at most concession stands. You would assume that someone was crazy if they did not run to the Upper Deck at Burnham Park on Saturday mornings to eat a freshly made Taylor Ham, Egg and Cheese sandwich or one of her MNLL famous Buffalo Chicken Sandwiches. There was always such disappointment when they sold out! In addition to handling the duties of the Upper Deck concession stand for the past four years, Jill served as "Team Mom“ for several years, most recently for Fairchild Fire Company. For all of her time and her dedication to MNLL, it is a fitting honor to recognize Jill with the 2011 Jeannine Davis Award
Joanne Donlin
Joanne Donlin has seen two daughters through the softball program and been an active volunteer for 9 years now. We have a lot of mothers who contribute greatly to the league but very few take the very direct route Joanne used: managing and coaching teams, including all-stars teams. She’s been a manager or coach for 7 of her 9 years around Little League and did everything else asked of her on the side—helped with uniforms, helped run tryouts, make all the phone calls, solicit new volunteers, and special counsel to young ladies. Her warm demeanor earned early trust from her players but she gained a strong knowledge of the game. Most importantly, she had a sixth sense of how the young ladies were reacting/feeling in practices and games—and knew how to motivate them through either encouraging or challenging them. As noted before, she did much more than manage teams or coach. She’d have parked cars in the Vets Field lot if the league needed it. MNLL softball was lucky to have her for all these years and will miss her now that her girls have graduated.

The Tommy Mischiara Sportsmanship Memorial Trophy The Tommy Mischiara Sportsmanship Memorial Trophy was established in 1958. It is presented annually to the graduating Little Leaguer who has demonstrated the highest qualities of sportsmanship, leadership, attitude and ability as a Morristown National Little League Player. This award is the highest honor that Morristown National Little League has to bestow. Therefore, the major league managers are charged with undertaking the selection exercise with extreme care in their selection and deliberations. The Tommy Mischiara Sportsmanship 2011 Memorial Trophy This year the Morristown National Little League is proud to present the 2011 Tommy Mischiara Sportsmanship Memorial Award to:
Samuel “Chase” Champi Throughout Chase’s years in Morristown National Little League, and certainly during his three years in the Majors, he has demonstrated all the qualities that the prestigious Mischiara Award is based upon. Chase was a team leader and led by example and by his words of encouragement to the younger players. He came to practice with the intent of working hard to improve his skills. He played hard regardless of the score. Chase was always willing to do what was in the best interest of the team. He played wherever he was needed and did so with enthusiasm. Offensively, Chase was a constant threat to the opposing pitcher. Defensively, his prowess behind the plate was well respected by the opposing teams; he has joined the elite group of outstanding MNLL catchers. Morristown National will be proud of Chase as he continues through his future years in athletics. Future coaches at all levels will be pleased to have this MNLL product. His attitude and commitment will benefit him in all his endeavors. Chase was a pleasure to coach and we all wish him continued success
Jami Wendel
Jami Wendel was an outstanding player and teammate for Hillside Hose and All-Stars for the past 3 years. While Jami did it all on the baseball field, whether throwing a no-hitter or hitting one of his many home runs, his greatest attribute to his coaches was his leadership and example he displayed to his teammates. He was always the first one to show up at practices and games and always was ready to play. He enjoyed the game and his love of baseball rubbed off on his teammates and helped lead his team to the finals of the play-offs. Jami always had a team first attitude and is a true leader and fine young man who represented MNLL with class and dignity.
Awards
The Craig O’Connor Award The Craig O’Connor Award is presented annually to the graduating 12-year old softball player who has demonstrated the highest qualities of sportsmanship, leadership, attitude and ability as a Morristown National Little League Player. This year we are proud to present the 2011 Craig O’Connor Award to:
Sara, also known as Boo, started her MNLL softball career in the Minors division in 2007 playing for Velocity Sports. That year Velocity was undefeated in the regular season. In 2008 Velocity & Boo won the Minors Division Championship.
Sara "Boo" Seuffert
For her last year in Minors, she played for Fairchild Fire in 2009 and was a member of the Minors All Star team. She then moved up to the Majors Division in 2010 playing for River Drive Construction. That year Boo was a member of the Majors All Star team that ended up as the District runner up.
In 2011, Boo played her last Majors season with the Jerzey Derby Brigade, where she continued to display her love for MNLL Softball. In her last Majors softball season Boo continued her work on becoming a better player and teammate. Boo's willingness to practice and play all positions defensively and her ability to be a play maker and clean up hitter offensively made her invaluable on this years 12U Majors All Star team. After a bit of a slow start J. Long Painting found it's stride and really played well from mid season on. The team picked up some really talented players in the draft all of whom made significant contributions during the season and playoffs. A deep pitching staff led by Jo-Jo Brunell and Jaxen Ruhalter kept the team in every game. It was really a magical run through the playoffs with several exciting games including a back and forth nail biter against the defending champs that ended with a 14-13 victory. The kids really supported each other wonderfully this season and it made the coaching staff very proud. Congratulations to the players, parents and coaches of J. Long Painting the 2011 Majors Champions!

Villa Café started the season slowly, eventually earning a 4-8 record, capped by a big win in the last regular season game against the number two team and playing much smarter ball. This momentum carried into the playoffs, with bats that came alive and pitching that found its groove. The late season pitching combination of Matt Haynie (the Ace) - to Max Cooper (the Specialist) – to Theo Coffeen-Vandeven (the Closer) , kept pitch counts low and resulted in an exciting 5 game undefeated run to the AAA Championship. Literally every player on the team ended up having their time in the spotlight, with big contributions throughout the playoffs, both offensively and defensively. Whether a key double, capping a 6 run comeback in the bottom of the 6th inning in the first championship game, by Liam Carragher, or two key ‘steamrolled’ tags at the plate by our “tough as nails” catcher Cameron MacDonald, this was truly a team effort. Overall, the boys were great sports, played increasingly strong ball, formed bonds that will last a lifetime and clawed their way to a Championship that made the coaches, parents and the League very proud.

This was my second year coaching the juniors program. My first season we only had 12 girls in the entire juniors program. This season, with a huge group of 13 year old girls moving up we had 31 girls in total. Morristown was represented by two solid clubs who always gave a good effort on the field. Due to an unusually rainy season, we only had 2 practices before our first scheduled game. The year started with a rainout against our sister team and we would spend the rest of the season trying to catch up to get our games in. We were lucky to get most of our games in early and we were able squeeze in our make-ups later in the season. This group of girls bonded together nicely throughout the season. Our team had 2 solid pitchers, good defense and clutch hitting to go (13-1). The league was much more solid this year then the previous years. We had a few injuries along the way and keeping 15 players engaged with shared playing time can be challenging, but I feel we did a good job to keep everyone happy and we continued to improve their skills and win ball-games along the way. Our season ended with a playoff game against our sister Morristown team that went 9 innings with our team eventually being the winner. It was the best game of the season and I was proud of the job both teams had done and all the talent we had developed over the season. We have always been proud of our juniors program and the girls always gave a great effort which always brought out the best in every team that played us. As I move on, I feel the program will be in good hands next season and Morristown will again be the team to beat.

2011 was a supposed rebuilding year for the FOP#136’ers with only 3 girls returning from the prior year’s team. Amy, Gabi, and Mac welcomed the additional 9 new girls to the team and the team immediately focused on having fun and playing softball. Despite the massive amounts of rain that wreaked havoc on our practice and game schedules, the girls practiced hard and worked on improving their skills and softball knowledge each week. (along with an occasional ice cream raid and the weekly “No Rain” dance thrown into the mix). The team steadily improved play, and by the second half of the season they were firing on all cylinders. All 12 girls contributed to the FOP#136’ers winning 6 of our last 7 games. The girls won their first playoff game 10-0. Big RBI’s by Mel (3), Victoria (3), Amy (2), Isabelle (1), and Julianna (1) combined with key runs scored by Kaelli (2) and Kelsey (2) fueled the offense. The defense was led by a 2 hit shutout pitched by Ada and a slick double play by Gabi at second base. The FOP#136’ers kept the pedal to the metal in the championship game, winning 8-4. This time, it was RBI’s by Izzy (3), Gabi (3), Isabelle(1) and Ada (1) and very important runs scored by Julianna, Kaelli (Pickles), Kelly, Kelsey, Mac (I’m friends with Regis), and Victoria that led the offensive charge. A shoestring catch by Mel (Sparkling Hammer) killed a late inning rally that sealed the victory. Having a team of such wonderful girls (lots of characters) who were also great teammates, made the season truly a pleasure (and coaching much easier). Coaches Giammarino, McKenna, Mater, and I want to wish all of the “graduating” players, Amy, Gabi, Kaelli, Mac, Mel, and Victoria, best of luck next year in the Juniors (we’ll miss you!) We are very much looking forward to “rebuilding” again in 2012 with the 6 very strong returning players (Ada, Isabelle, Izzy, Julianna, Kelly, and Kelsey)

After a rainy preseason that only allowed for one practice, FOP 136 got off to a slow start at 0-2. However, over the next several weeks, the team went on to win nine of its remaining twelve games to finish the regular season at 9-5. This earned them the second seed in the playoffs. A thrilling one run victory in the semifinals put the squad in the finals. The team emerged victorious in an extremely close 9-6 contest to win the championship. FOP 136 received contributions from all of its players that allowed for the team’s overall improvement and success. The girls played many different positions and always played their hardest to help the team. It was a fun year for all connected to FOP 136!

MNLL 12 Year Old All Star’s were one team away from winning the Williamsport District 1 tournament in order to move on to the Section Tournament. The determination, team chemistry and physical ability of these young men produced a 7-2 record (9 games in 16 days) in one of the toughest Districts in the State. It all started with District Pool play where MNLL was 4-0 to win their respective Pool. Game 1 we hosted a tough Hanover team and won 12-9. JoJo Brunnell led the team with a 3 run HR and pitched 3-1/3 innings giving up 2 runs. Next on tap was the perennial powerhouse Randolph East. MNLL prevailed 3-0 behind the pitching of Brunnell and a big base hit by Dylan Allison. Game 3 of Pool play MNLL matched up with Roxbury American. MNLL topped Roxbury 5-1 with good pitching from Jami Wendel and two key singles from Tommy Quinn. The final game of Pool Play had MNLL slated against another 3-0 team in Florham Park. MNLL blasted them 16-10 with a team total of five HR’s. Matthew Pridgen sent one into the sunset along with Chase Champi (2), John Montfort and Chris Lofrumento. Jaxen Ruhalter quieted their bats with 4-1/3 quality innings of pitching. After Pool Play, MNLL moved on to Bracket Play of the District 1 Tournament and it started with Randolph West. No issue. MNLL won 14-8. The long ball led the way again with four HR’s – Montfort, Wendel and Champi (2). Next was our cross town rival, Morristown American LL. It ended up being the game of the tournament. Losing 5-2 going into the top of the 6th inning, we erupted for 6 runs to go ahead 8-5. Key at bats from Graydon Rogers, Quinn and the 3 run double from Lofrumento highlighted the inning. Ruhalter closed the door and we won 8-7. Onto the District winner’s brackets semi-finals against powerhouse Mendham. Mendham won 14-2 with MNLL’s two runs coming from a Wendel HR. Next up was Roxbury National at their home park. MNLL topped them 16-5 with key hitting from Alex Ramirez, Ruhalter and Montfort. Thus a trip to the Finals against the Mendham team. Although MNLL played extremely tough and determined, Mendham won 12-5. MNLL 12’s were a determined group especially when we played three games with only nine players. Unfortunately Josh Szott and Reed Gannon did not participate due to season ending injuries but their presence was always felt. The Coaches, Sam Champi, Sam Champi, Jr., Peter Quinn, Randy Shupe and Dan Spautz would like to thank all the players and parents for a great five weeks of baseball and we wish them all the luck in the future.

A great summer season, that ended too soon! The team started slow, but warmed up quickly, with significant offensive and defensive contributions by everyone. For the tournament, the boys batted over .400 as a team, with home runs from Robbie Flanagan (3), Luke Schulte (2), John Bickers and a Grand Slam from Alex Ramirez. The offensive was supported by the great pitching efforts of Robbie Flanagan, Bailey Wild, Bryan Pruett and Brandon Long. The season had some close losses, some blow-out wins and an amazing 10-9 come-from behind win against Tri-Town that required a full team-effort. After an exciting, but disappointing 54 playoff loss to Hanover, the boys finished the tournament with a 6-4 record. It was a pleasure to work with this group of young men who exhibited positive attitudes and a great approach to the game. They also got along well and treated each other with respect and kindness!! They really played like a team that Morristown should be proud of!!!

Going into this all star season there were great expectations on this group of girls. The previous two years our juniors program had gone to the state championships and finished third in 2009 and second in 2010. I felt with a solid coaching staff and a group of extremely talented girls we would be solid in the field and at bat. In the districts our group had to get by a veteran Mendham team that always played exceptionally well against us. This was a 3 out of 5 series that went the distance. With softball being a game of inches we came up just short of our goals losing in the final game which was played in Mendham. Everyone who came to our games got to see some of the best softball ever played with each team winning home games. In our home games at Vets Field we held our own winning game 2 with a walk off hit in the final inning. In game 4 our pitcher gave us an outstanding effort throwing a one hitter and striking out 11 kids including the final 3 hitters to end the game. Our girls gave their heart and soul to win but we came up short in the final game after having a lead going into the last inning. In the end I feel their were no losers on the field and the girls and coaching staff had done their job. We just lost to an exceptional team. We did not have to travel to Elmer to play in the state championship because the top two teams played right here in Morris County. It was a year of upsets with the Cumberland team who had won the previous 2 years also losing. The Mendham team then went on to win the district and state championship. When they finally got home after taking 4th place in the sectionals they were quick to admit that we were as good a team that they had played in the entire tournament. I can say as a manager how proud I am of the girls even in defeat. This group of girls will not be judged by this series but their entire softball career for MNLL. When they first got into the league there were no district or sectional championships but they are the ones who put girls softball on the map for MNLL. I have no doubt with the seven girls coming back next season that they can come back to win the districts. For my girls who are graduating Sarah, Alyssa, Mimi, Chandler and Nicole, I look forward to seeing you play at MHS and am grateful to have coached you. Please don't ever forget what was accomplished over your little league careers.

MNLL'S 2011 12U Girls Softball All STAR Team organized by Manager Chris Danielson, coached by Brad Patterson and Tyler Perry had less than two weeks to recruit, comply, practice and compete against three very strong and seasoned teams. All of our girls played hard from the start to the very last out. The following team members: Boo Seuffert, Katelyn Woebse, Kaeli Zacchini, Olivia Perry, Ada Patterson, Meghan Acampora, Nicole Danielson, Elizabeth Rado, Mary Grace Vallacchi, Jessica Willette and Jessi Valencia all displayed courage and heart over the course of three very tough games. Our MNLL girls managed to produce 18 hits and get 15 runs across on very good pitching over just three games. Boo Seuffert threw two very competitive games against very strong and disciplined opposing hitting. Our team was very young team defensively. We thank and wish all of our girls the best in life. The following girls: Ada Patterson, Meghan Acampora, Nicole Danielson, Elizabeth Rado, Mary Grace Vallacchi, Jessica Willette and Jessi Valencia gained valuable tournament experience and should represent our Majors league well in 2012.

The MNLL 11 Year Old Star team finished with a 2-3 record. The record does not fully reflect how well this team played. The season opened with a 28-0 win against Par Troy West. The next game was a loss to the eventual District Champs Par- Troy East 11-0. The third game was a back and forth battle with Denvile losing 12-10. The team came back strong with great pitching and defense in the final two games. We beat Morristown American 5-0 for our second win. In the final game of pool play we lost to Hanover 2-1 in a seven inning dual. The 11's showed a great deal character and determination during these 5 games.

This year's 10-year-old All Star team lost its first 2 games in pool play--5 to 2 against Mendham and 6 to 5 against the eventual District champs Par Troy East. They bounced back and advanced to the District round with big wins by way of mercy rule against Rockaway American and Par-Troy West. Eliminated from the District round by Roxbury National and Randolph West, the 10's expanded their roster and entered the Morris Plains-Dover summer tournament. They played to a 9 and 2 record in the tournament, losing the championship game to Hanover. Overall, the 10's were 11 and 6 this summer and made their coaches, parents, fans, and Morristown National proud.

The 9 year old Star Team was comprised of a great group of boys who always gave it their all. We started the season with a big 18-6 victory over Roxbury followed by 2 tough losses to Parsippany and Madison. The season continued in the “you win some you lose some” pattern but the boys always had a smile on their face and played hard. We had some great pitching by Patrick Montfort, Lucas Schantz and Cole Fortmuller and some superb plays behind the plate by Thomas Montfort and Jack Brown. More than half the team had a batting average better than .360 with Theo Coffeen-Vandeven leading the way with a solid .600 avg. Every kid had a play that was memorable. Whether it was the perfect bunt by Owen Duffy, the beautiful double by Brenden Nilson or the key triple by Jerry Jabbour that brought him out of his short lived slump, they all added to the team’s success. We could always count on Joe Oettinger for a solid RBI to keep us in the game and no one will forget Jack Woodworth and Crosby Ruhalter teaming up to delivering the big hits in the win over Morristown American. As the month of July came to an end so did the All Star season. The boys made friendships that will last a lifetime and many of them were already talking about playing together next season.

After a couple of tough weeks of practice, the minors softball team was ready for all-star play. The team rallied for a thrilling, come from behind, walk-off win over Hanover 8-7 at Vets. The team put on a hitting clinic in Rockaway rolling to a 20-9 victory to move their record to 2-0 in pool play. Then the squad lost a tight road contest to Chester 9-6 dropping the record to 2-1. Three teams in the pool all had 2-1 records and our girls were eliminated by the “runs allowed per inning” tiebreaker. It was a difficult way to be eliminated from the tournament. Over the all-stars season, the girls worked hard at learning new facets of the game not employed during the regular season such as bunting, stealing, and the defense of the same. The team improved dramatically in a few short weeks, played hard and always supported each other.
