President’s Message April 2013 Dear Morristown National Families, If you are new to the league, welcome! If you are returning, thank you for your continued support. I am excited to begin the 2013 Little League season. You will soon notice changes that are happening all around us, with the intent to create a great experience for all members. Your Board of Directors is committed to making this season a fun-filled and safe experience for all the players. nd

As we begin our 62 Morristown National Little League season, our organization has over 450 players participating in baseball and softball in various divisions. It’s one of the largest programs in District 1. New this year, beginning with the Minors AA baseball division, all teams will have a full season of interleague games with Morris Plains Little League. This is a great opportunity to get to know our neighbors to the north and add some variety to the schedule. Our softball program has played games against Morris Plains for years. We are also looking forward to some fun night games under the lights at Community Park. Morristown National Little League operates on a 100% volunteer basis. I would like to thank the many people who put in considerable time and effort to make our program run smoothly. The board members oversee all aspects of the league. They have been meeting for months already, working on field maintenance, discussing and organizing schedules, team rosters, uniforms, player and coach training clinics, concessions, fundraising, and the planning of several special events we have scheduled this season. A special thanks to our Managers and Coaches who are truly the backbone of our program. They teach the fundamentals of the game with enthusiasm and positive encouragement. I would also like to thank our sponsors who have been so dedicated to both our softball and baseball programs over the years, please support them. Our league website www.mnll.org is the best source for up-to-date information regarding league activities. Please check there often for information about registration, teams, schedules and events. I urge all members to lend a hand wherever and whenever possible. We welcome participation and input from any parent. Please feel free to contact any board member or myself with ideas, or to learn how you can become more involved in helping the organization continue to improve. As a volunteer parent of players in both the baseball and softball programs I look forward to seeing many of you on the ball fields. Sincerely Jeff Fortmuller President

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS: All MNLL Board Members meet the second Tuesday night of every month (excluding August and December). Meetings are held @ 8:00pm at the Morristown Fire Department, 65 Speedwell Avenue (3rd floor). Purpose of the meeting is to discuss and plan our season and the program for the players. The public is welcome to attend.

What is Morristown National Little League? Morristown National Little League (MNLL) is a not for profit organization serving more than 450 boys and girls annually from the Morristown & Morris Township area. MNLL provides these children a safe and fun environment to learn both baseball & softball, while also providing team play and competitive advancement. MNLL is dedicated to developing in the children of our community the ideals of hard work, good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, courage and respect for authority, their peers and themselves. MNLL annually obtains an Operating Charter from Little League Baseball, Incorporated, Williamsport, Pennsylvania. MNLL is part of New Jersey Little League District 1, Section 1. As a charted league, MNLL can only draw members from within their approved boundaries. MNLL consist of those parts of the Town of Morristown and the Township of Morris that are located to the west of Route 202. Areas to the east of Route 202 participate in the Morristown American Little League. nd

MNLL baseball is now in its 62 year. We are open to all players 7-12 years of age (or those 6 year olds who have completed one year of Tee ball). Our Major League is open via a player draft to players age 10 through 12; Minors AAA League is open to all players 9 through 12; Minors AA (machine pitch) play is for players age 8; and Instructional A League (coach pitch) play is for age 7, or 6 year olds with Tee ball experience. Pursuant to Little League regulations, a th players' "age" is determined by their actual age on April 30 of the current season (April 30, 2013). MNLL softball has operated for nearly 25 years. To maintain a competitive level of play, MNLL softball includes all eligible players from the Town of Morristown and Morris Township. We have permission from Little League International to combine there two areas for League play, which is open to all players, 7-15 years of age. Our Junior Level team is open to all players age 13 through 15; Major League play is open to all players ages 11 through 12 and Minor League play is open to all girls ages 8 through 10; an Instructional Leagues is for those age 7 through 9. For softball, players "ages" are determined by their actual age on st December 31 of the previous season (Dec. 31, 2012). This program is an all-volunteer organization for the benefit of your children and any input you can give is greatly appreciated by all! If interested in volunteering for the 2013 season, contact a Board Member. Annually, MNLL conducts background check(s) for all volunteers, which may include a review of sex offender registries, child abuse and criminal history records. Any conviction or guilty plea excludes a volunteer or hired worker from participating in Little League. Any other convictions or guilty pleas that the Board determines is not in the best interest of a child (such as drugs, assault, etc.) may also be cause for exclusion. Additionally, all managers and coaches must be certified in the Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. (Sports Awareness for Educating Today's Youth) safety training course.

MNLL - Parental Code of Conduct To maintain the positive, fulfilling atmosphere we have grown to love and expect in Morristown National Little League, the Board of Directors requires all parents to read, understand and adhere to the following: As a parent of Morristown National Little League, baseball & softball, I will: • • • • • • • • •

Provide positive support, care, and encouragement for my child participating in the league; Encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support for all players, managers, coaches, and officials at every game, practice or other league event; Place the emotional and physical well-being of my child ahead of my personal desire for him or her to win; Insist that my child play in a safe and healthy environment; Support managers, coaches, and officials working with my child, in order to create a positive and enjoyable experience for all; Remember that the game is first and foremost for the children, not the adults; Do my best to make youth sports fun for my child; Ask my child to treat other players, managers, coaches, officials and fans with respect regardless of race, creed or ability. Help my child enjoy his/her Little League experience by doing whatever I can to be a positive role model, such as being a respectful fan, and helping the managers and coaches with administrative duties.

I realize that if I abide by these guidelines, the MNLL experience will be more rewarding and enjoyable for all people involved. The Board of Directors reserves the right to take appropriate actions, as seen fit by the Board, to discipline, suspend, or remove members whose conduct is considered detrimental to the best interest of the MNLL or Little League Baseball.

General •

Please clean-up and dispose of any trash, bottles, recyclables, etc in the appropriate containers. Pay attention – baseballs may leave the field of play at any time. Be aware of your surroundings to avoid injury.

Safety is the Most Important Consideration Little League Baseball has one of the best records of safety and protection of any youth athletic program in the world. Improvements in safety practices from continuing studies, application of rigid standard in equipment and the adoption of rules and regulations gained from years of experience are utilized to protect our young athletes. However, as an active sport, residual risk is an inherent part of the game and everyone (players, coaches, fans) should pay attention at all times to minimize injury. Parents may be assured their children utilize the best and safest equipment available, as required by Little League regulations. Administrative training through Little League Baseball, as well as clinics and training programs that stress safety creates an atmosphere of concern and safety-consciousness for our volunteers and coaches.

Challenger League Opening Day Sunday April 14th, 2013 Morristown National Little League will once again be hosting Opening Day for the Morris County Challenger League (http://www.mccll.org/) on SUNDAY APRIL 14th @ 2:00pm. The Challenger League offers an athletic league experience for handicapped kids of all ages and levels of ability. The kids have Cerebral Palsy, varying levels of autism, muscular dystrophy, and other serious challenges, but you'd never know it from their attitudes. MNLL has proudly hosted the opening day for this league for several years, it is one of the highlights of our season. If you haven't seen or participated in one of these events you are missing something truly special, and it definitely something that MNLL kids will never forget being a part of. The Day: MCCLL has six teams--four of them are younger kids and two with age 13 and up teen-age kids. The Challenger League relies on the host league (MNLL) to supply a large number of its league players as volunteer "buddies" to shepherd the younger Challenger League kids through the game. That said, we need our MNLL softball and baseball players, AGE 10 AND UP, in uniform at the games. The first games are at 2:00pm and will match the younger Challenger teams against each other. You will never forget the sight of a kid in a wheelchair hitting a ball and being pushed around the bases (sometimes on one wheel!) by one of their MNLL player Buddies. The second games are at 4:00pm, these games will match the older and most able of the Challenger kids against teams composed of MNLL players. The MNLL teams will be handicapped by some special rules to even things out (Let's just say our kids have never won one of these games!). Please arrive by 12:30 so there's time to get the buddies organized and for everyone to get instructions on exactly how this all works. Thank you and see you on Sunday, April 14th 2013 for a wonderful day.

CONCESSION STANDS Welcome to another exciting season of MNLL Baseball and Softball. As a reminder to the retuning families and as an introduction to our new families, the concession stands are run as a convenience (where else could you easily pick up a bottle of water or Powerade® for your player when they "forgot" theirs, or even feed your family on a game night). The stands also serve as a FUNDRAISER for the League. The stands help to defray league expenses for uniform and equipment needs, field supplies and other necessary items to keep the players playing.

"The Upper Deck", Burnham Park (Baseball) The Upper Deck concession stand cannot function without Volunteers. We know that people are busy, but we ask that everyone do their small part to keep the league running smoothly. Each Majors team will be responsible to provide volunteers to work the concession stand during all their Home Games. A minimum of 2-4 volunteers are needed for about 23 hours each time. So, be sure to sign-up and show up in support of MNLL. Believe it or not – it is a lot of fun! Veteran’s Field (Softball) The concession stand at Veteran’s Field cannot function without Volunteers. We know that people are busy, but we ask that everyone do their small part to keep the league running smoothly. Each home team will be responsible to provide volunteers to work the concession stand during all their Home Games at Veteran’s Field. Two volunteers are needed for about two hours each time. So, be sure to sign-up and show up in support of MNLL Softball. Veteran’s Field snack stand has heat, shade, comfortable chairs, and clean bathrooms. MNLL Softball hires a company to clean the bathrooms throughout the year (Regular season, All-Stars, and Fall Ball). So if you want to stay out of the sun, the rain, the cold (maybe not this year), and watch the game, this is the spot for you.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT ALL-STARS! As part of Little League, MNLL baseball fields All-Star teams at certain levels/ages to compete in LL-sanctioned tournaments. Most of you are familiar with the Little League World Series, which is a 12-year old tournament that is televised from Williamsport, PA every August. In addition to a 12-year All-Star team, MNLL also participates in an 11-year old and a 10-year old All-Star tournament that end at the State Level (i.e. State Champion). MNLL also participates in non-Williamsport sponsored tournaments (e.g. Rockaway, 9-yr old Mendham) after the regular season and playoffs. MNLL softball fields 3 Little League All-Star teams: Juniors (players 13-14), Majors (players 11 and 12) and Minors (players 9 and 10). The more you win the farther you go. Each All-Star team is guaranteed 3 games. Williamsport Tournament All-Star teams entail a significant commitment on each family's part. The practice schedule is more rigorous than non-Williamsport tournament teams (often seven days a week until tournament play begins). Family Vacations the end of June through July are not recommended. Every LL team participating in the Williamsport tournament must complete an affidavit. •

• •

All Williamsport Team participants MUST supply the following minimum information at the first practice following team selection: o Original Birth Certificate with raised seal and one copy (originals will be returned after leagues affidavit is approved, copy will stay with manager) o Documents to support Full residence eligibility requirements (see Residence Eligibility Requirements on website, summary provided below) All MNLL Managers & Coaches should visit the NJ District One website to read the complete rules, requirements, details, etc... The teams are competitive and difficult to make. The managers will be selecting the teams based on input from regular season coaches, observing the players throughout the year, and a potential try out session. A try-out is at the discretion of the All-Star team manager.

What Parents Should Know About Little League Insurance Morristown National Little League (MNLL) provides a general accident and health, and dental insurance program for all registered participants in MNLL. Registered participants will be covered for losses incurred while: (1) participating in all scheduled, sponsored, and supervised activities of the league and (2) during district direct travel to and from such activity. The overall aggregate limit of indemnity is $ 5,000,000. Accident Medical Expense Benefit has a $ 0.00 deductible, a $ 100 % co-insurance, and a $ 100,000 aggregate maximum benefit. THIS COVERAGE IS PAYABLE ONLY IN EXCEES OF ANY EXPENSES PAYABLE BY OTHER VALID AND COLLCTIBLE INSURANCE. MNLL, not the parent, pays for this insurance program. It must not be inferred that a parent who contributes to the support of the league is paying for an insurance policy on the youngster. The policy is another service offered by MNLL. This program makes it possible for MNLL to offer unmatched, low-cost protection with assurance to parents that adequate coverage is in forces at all times during the season. If your child sustains an injury covered by the MNLL policy while taking part in Little League Baseball, here is how it works: • • •

Your child’s coach will complete an accident report and file it with the MNLL Safety Officer. Parent should file an initial claim under insurance carried by your family Should your family insurance plan not fully cover the injury treatment,, the MNLL policy will help pay the difference up to the stated maximum benefits. This includes any deductible or exclusions in your own insurance plan. If your child is not covered by any family insurance plan, the MNLL policy will provide benefits for all covered injury treatment costs up to the maximum benefits of each policy.

We trust that this brief summary is helpful in understanding the important aspect of the Morristown National Little League insurance program. THE POLICY PROVISIONS OF THE CONTRACT DETERMINE THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THE ACTUAL COVERAGE. BASEBALL AFTER MNLL Morristown Babe Ruth Baseball To all interested 13-15 yr Old Boys: While many players and families believe that travel baseball is the only non-school sanctioned option after Little League, it is important to know there is a local league just waiting for interested young ballplayers eager to play on a full-sized baseball diamond. Morristown Babe Ruth provides players with a fun, and competitive opportunity to play with and against some of the best baseball players in our community. Many of the players currently playing in Morristown Babe Ruth also participate on school and travel baseball teams. For more than fifty years, Morristown Babe Ruth has been a central part of the local community and has been an organization which provides children in Morristown, Morris Township and Morris Plains the opportunity to learn and play baseball, as well as come together as a group. Babe Ruth baseball promotes participation in the game for all skill levels and has rules to ensure that all players have an opportunity to take the field and enjoy the game. We promote a fun, relaxing, environment to improve your game, play with friends and continue to develop sportsmanship and teamwork skills. This is a no cut league, everyone that tries out makes a team. Registration typically begins in February/March, with Tryouts and teams selected in April. Typically, we play about a 15-game season that runs in May & June, with 13-yr and 14yr All-Stars teams playing in July. The games are scheduled, to the greatest extent possible, to not conflict with Frelinghuysen Middle School, Morris Plains Middle School, Assumption School and Morristown High School baseball games. This would enable you to participate on teams at those schools and in Babe Ruth Baseball. If you are on another team, Babe Ruth would give you a chance to play other positions. So – give it some thought and consider joining the nearly 120 current players in Morristown Babe Ruth Baseball with your friends in the Spring of 2014. For more information and updates about Morristown Babe Ruth baseball, check out our website: http://morristown.baberuthonline.com/

For more information on the Morristown Babe Ruth League you can contact the league at: [email protected]
