Page 6 Metro State History (preseason): Metro State is in its seventh year with a Division II track program. By only fielding track athletes and no field athletes, Metro State usually finishes towards the bottom of the RMAC with its highest finish coming in 2008 when the team placed sixth at the RMAC Championships. Every other season the team placed seventh. However, the limit on athletes has not hampered the team’s competitiveness on a national level, as the team has sent at least one runner to nationals four of the past five years. Metro State placed 10th at the NCAA Championships in 2009, highlighted by Anthony Luna’s individual championship in the 800 meters. He is currently Metro State’s only national champion. In 2010, Shawn Lindbom placed second in the 800 and was joined by two other All-Americans when Brandon Johnson and Carl Arnold III both finished in the top eight in the mile. Metro State has consistently had a strong distance medley relay team, qualifying for nationals in 2009 and 2010, and winning the RMAC Championship in 2011, despite not qualifying for nationals. Altogether, Metro State has had 13 runners named All-America in indoor track in the program’s first five years. The women’s team is also in its seventh season. It is had several runners that have been very competitive at the conference level, but has yet to send a female to the NCAA Championships. The team’s highest finish at the RMAC Championships came in 2009 when it placed eighth. preSeason Outlook: Metro State’s men’s indoor track team returns the core of its leaders from last season, highlighted by junior Darius Reed. He earned All-America honors during the outdoor season after placing third at the NCAA Championships in the 110 hurdles. He saw drastic improvement from the indoor to the outdoor season, dropping 25 pounds from the end of the indoor season to the outdoor championships and still placed third at the RMAC indoor championships with a school-record time of 7.52 in the 55-meter hurdles in 2012. Michael Warburton and should anchor the middledistance runners as a sophomore, after placing

12th in the 800 meters during the indoor season and finishing seventh at the RMAC Outdoor Championships. Despite missing much of the fall with an injury, Warburton should be back for the spring in 2013. Cameron Jukkala will also be a middle-distance runner for MSU. Kraig Kleiner and Eiger Erickson both have had time off since their last competition, but should be potential national qualifiers in the distance events for the men. Kleiner missed last season with an injury. Erickson earned All-America honors in cross country in 2011 and was third team all-RMAC in outdoor track in 2011 before redshirting in both sports in 2012. Nick Kadlec, who was a national qualifier in 2012 during cross country, will also compete in the distance events. Kirk Harvey, Erik Boss and Kellen Fockler all return to the lineup in 2013 and could also compete for a spot at nationals. Harvey was an all-RMAC runner in cross country in 2012. In the sprints and jumps, Reed will be supported by several returners and a number of newcomers. Phil Hill Jr. finished 13th as a freshman at the RMAC Championships in the 55m. Jesse Thomas will also be a returner in the longer sprint events and middle-distance events. The women’s team will be led by a number of freshmen and newcomers. In the distance events, senior Bri Richards and junior Jesse Hecht will be pushed by freshmen Elysia Erickson, Mattie Jesmain, Janelle Lincks and Jamilah Rashid. Lincks was a national qualifiers in cross country in 2012 and all four freshmen were among MSU’s top-five during the cross country season.

Head Coach John Supsic • Fourth year as head coach

Supsic was named the head track and cross country coach at Metro State following the 2009 cross country season. He will be entering his third season as the team’s head cross country coach in 2012 and will begin his fourth season as the team’s track coach in the spring. The men’s cross country team has qualified for nationals all three of his seasons. Supsic’s cross country teams put together their best seasons in school history in 2011. The men’s team placed ninth at the NCAA Championships after finishing tied for fifth at the Central Region Championships and fifth at the RMAC Championships. Eiger Erickson became just the second All-America runner in school history, finishing 23rd at nationals. The women’s team had its best conference finish in school history, placing third at the RMAC Championships behind four all-conference runners. The indoor season saw several top runners redshirt, though the active runners still set a few records. Xenia Flores broke the women’s 3k and 5k records and Darius Reed broke the men’s 55-and-60-meter hurdles marks. The 2012 outdoor season had several firsts. Kylee Schuler became the first women’s runner to run at nationals, placing 11th in the 10k. Reed shattered the 110-hurdle record and finished third at nationals to earn All-America honors. He became the first non-distance runner to compete at nationals. Altogether, seven school records were broken during the season. Off the track, Kirk Harvey was named first team Academic All-District, becoming the first track athlete to earn those honors. In 2010 Supsic guided the men’s cross country team to its third straight NCAA Championships appearance where it finished 17th. The men also placed fourth in the RMAC and fifth at the Central Region Championships. His women’s team finished sixth at the RMAC Championships. Two runners were named all-conference as well. The men’s indoor track team sent three runners to the NCAA Championships. All three runners earned All-America honors, highlighted by Shawn Lindbom’s second-place finish in the 800 meters. Brandon Johnson and Carl Arnold III also placed in the top eight in the mile. The outdoor season had two more qualify for the postseason. Eiger Erickson competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and finished 11th, while Johnson came in fifth in the 5k. Lindbom and Arnold both redshirted during the outdoor season. As an assistant in 2009, Supsic helped men’s cross country team place 14th and the women finish 21st at the NCAA Championships. Both teams finished in the top-five in the highly competitive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. As head coach of the track teams in the spring of 2010, he led the men’s indoor team 27th-place finish at the NCAA Championships and the outdoor team to a 20th-place finish in the NCAA Championships. He coached the men’s distance medley relay team to third place at the indoor championships. In outdoor, Anthony Luna finished second in the 800 meters and Shawn Lindbom came in fourth as both runners earned All-America honors. Prior to assisting with Metro State in the fall of 2009, he served for over a year as an assistant with Regis University’s cross country team, designing workouts for studentathletes. Supsic had been an accountant in real estate from 2004-09, most recently with Mercy Housing, Inc. beginning in July, 2008, and spent three years as an auditor prior to his time in real estate. He graduated from Towson University in Maryland in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. While at Towson, Supsic was a two-year captain of the cross country team and earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors three times. After graduation, Supsic continued his running career with the Boulder Distance Project for four years under the former marathon world record holder, Steve Jones. His team won the U.S. marathon relay championship in 2006. A native of Baltimore, Md., Supsic is married to Dr. Kristin Carpenter.
