NCAC Men's Tennis Special KENYON SELECTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 28TH NORTH COAST MEN'S TENNIS SEASON
For Immediate Release Feb. xx, 2012
CLEVELAND -- North Coast Athletic Conference coaches have unanimously selected Kenyon as the preseason favorite based on balloting in the annual preseason men's tennis coaches poll. The Lords, five-time defending NCAC champions, were selected to finish first in the preseason poll after collecting all nine first-place votes and 81 total points from league coaches. Denison, last year's runner-up in the conference tournament, finished behind Kenyon in the polls with 67.5 points. DePauw, in its first season of men's tennis competition in the North Coast, finished third with 60.5 points, followed by Wabash (48) in fourth. Wittenberg finished fifth with 44 votes and was followed by Allegheny (42), Oberlin (29), Ohio Wesleyan (23) and Wooster (10). The Lords, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III tournament for the third time in four years last spring, return eight of its top players from a year ago. Junior Paul Burgin (Baltimore, MD/Pikesville) is the leading candidate to fill the void at No. 1 singles left by the graduation of All-American Jeremy Polster. Playing at second singles as a sophomore, Burgin racked up a 26-5 record, earned an all-NCAC first-team nod, was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Central Region Player to Watch and qualified for the NCAA Division III singles championships. Leading Kenyon for his 17th season is four-time NCAC Coach of the Year Scott Thielke. His current coaching record at Kenyon is 258-90 with the men's team and 270-110 with the women's team. Since 2000, Thielke has led the Lords to 11 NCAA appearances, including an active streak of 10 consecutive showings (2002-11). Kenyon leads the NCAC with 14 championships in 27 years (1989, 1991-93, 1995, 2002-05, 2007-11), including winning nine of the last 10 crowns. Denison is not far off in the all-time title count as it has earned 12 championships (1985-89, 1994, 1997-2001, 2006), while Wooster has captured two outright titles (1990, 1996) and four all-time. Denison and Wooster shared the inaugural title in 1985, while Denison, Kenyon and Wooster were declared tri-champions in 1989. Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of nine academically selective colleges and universities Allegheny College, Denison University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster, along with affiliate member, Earlham College (field hockey). DePauw University will join the North Coast beginning with the 2011-12 academic year. The NCAC sponsors 23 championship sports, 11 for men and 12 for women. -NCAC-
