NCAC Women's Tennis Special DENISON SELECTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 28TH NORTH COAST WOMEN'S TENNIS SEASON
For Immediate Release Feb. 28, 2012
CLEVELAND -- North Coast Athletic Conference coaches have unanimously selected Denison as the preseason favorite based on balloting in the annual women's tennis preseason coaches poll. The Big Red, winners of the past 10 NCAC championships, were selected to finish first in the preseason poll after collecting three first-place votes and 59 total points from league coaches. DePauw, in its first season of women's tennis competition in the North Coast, collected the other five first-place votes and finished second with 55 points. Kenyon finished third with 46 points, followed by Oberlin (42) in fourth. Wittenberg finished fifth with 31 points and was followed by Allegheny (29), Ohio Wesleyan (17) and Wooster (9). Denison, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III tournament for the seventh time in the last eight seasons last spring, returns three seniors for the 2012 campaign. Senior Sarah Short (Cheswick, PA/Fox Chapel) looks to step into the No. 1 position after posting an 18-10 overall singles mark a year ago. Short also earned All-American honors and was an all-NCAC first-team selection in doubles play, compiling an 18-10 overall record and going 6-0 in conference matches. Leading the Denison women for his 13th season is 10-time NCAC Coach of the Year Peter Burling. His current coaching record at Denison is 304-124 with the men's team and 252-88 with the women's team. In 27 years of North Coast women's tennis competition, three schools have claimed championships: Allegheny took the first one in 1985, then Kenyon went on a run to claim 15 of the next 16 titles, interrupted only by Denison's first title in 1994. The Big Red again broke the Ladies's streak in 2002, and have claimed every title since. Kenyon has a total of 15 North Coast titles to Denison's 11, which include the past 10 in a row. Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of nine academically selective colleges and universities Allegheny College, Denison University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster, along with affiliate member, Earlham College (field hockey). DePauw University will join the North Coast beginning with the 2011-12 academic year. The NCAC sponsors 23 championship sports, 11 for men and 12 for women. -NCAC-
