2013 Fordham Football Prospectus Head Coach - Joe Moorhead As an English major at Fordham, Joe Moorhead surely read Thomas Wolfe’s “You Can’t Go Home Again.” But fortunately for Fordham football fans he didn’t take it to heart as Moorhead returned to his alma mater to assume the position of head football coach in December of 2011, and immediately made a difference, leading the Rams to one of the top turnarounds in NCAA history. Inheriting a team that had gone 1-10 in 2011, Moorhead guided Fordham to a 6-5 record in 2012, the second best turnaround in the NCAA FCS last fall. The six wins were the most for a first-year Fordham head football coach since Jim “Sleepy” Crowley also won six games in his first season at Fordham in 1933. The Rams showed tremendous improvement on the offensive side of the ball under Moorhead’s tutelage which came as no surprise as Moorhead was a record-setting quarterback at Fordham in the 1990’s. Last fall, the Fordham offense averaged 435.7 yards/game, second best in the Patriot League and 20th best in the NCAA FCS while the Rams scored 31.2 ppg, second in the league and 31st in the NCAA FCS. On the ground in 2012, Fordham was led by Carlton Koonce who broke the school’s single season rushing record with 1,596 yards, leading the Patriot League and ranking fourth in the NCAA FCS in rushing yards/game. Through the air, the Rams had the second-ranked passing offense in the Patriot League, averaging 279.6 yards/game, 18th best in the NCAA FCS. Moorhead arrived at Fordham with 14 years of collegiate coaching experience, most recently as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Connecticut where he coached the previous three years. He served as the offensive coordinator in 2009 and 2010, leading an offensive unit that was second in the BIG EAST Conference in scoring offense and rushing offense in 2010, as the Huskies won the conference title and appeared in the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma. Following the season, running back Jordan Todman was named Second Team All-America and BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year. Additionally, two other offensive players were named First Team AllBIG EAST with Todman (San Diego/sixth round) and Anthony Sherman (Arizona/fifth round) being selected in the NFL draft. In 2009, the UConn offense finished the season as the third most pro-
ductive offense in the BIG EAST, second in scoring, and Moorhead was nominated for the Frank Broyles Award, presented annually to the Top Assistant Coach in the NCAA FBS. The Huskies finished the season 8-5 and defeated South Carolina in the PapaJohns.com Bowl. Prior to his stay at Connecticut, Moorhead served as an assistant coach at Akron for five years (2004-2008), the final two as the offensive coordinator. In 2008, Akron was one of 17 schools nationally to be ranked among the top 50 in rushing offense (45th at 165.7 yards per game), passing offense (46th at 231.50), total offense (40th at 396.97) and scoring offense (36th at 30.0 points per game). Akron was the most improved school in the nation in 2008 in terms of total offense and was the sixth-most improved in scoring offense. In the Mid-American Conference (MAC), Akron was third in points per game and turnover margin (plus 0.5) and fourth in rushing yards per game. In 2006, Moorhead was the Akron quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, where he mentored Luke Getsy, who left Akron with 24 different school records. The Zips won the school’s first-ever Mid-American Conference championship and played in the Motor City Bowl in 2005 with Moorhead serving as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. Current New York Giant Domenik Hixon set a school single-season record that fall with 1,210 receiving yards under Moorhead’s tutelage. Moorhead also has Patriot League experience, serving as an assistant at Georgetown for four seasons from 2000 through 2003, where he had stints as the running backs coach, quarterbacks coach and the offensive coordinator, in his final year. As a collegiate performer at Fordham, Moorhead was a threeyear starter at quarterback and was a team captain as a senior. He was a Second Team All-Patriot League pick as a senior, finishing 13th nationally in total offense, and graduated with school single-season records for completions and passing yards. Following his collegiate career, Moorhead spent time in the training camp of the Milwaukee Mustangs of the Arena Football League after playing the 1996 season for the Munich Cowboys of the E.F.A.F. Moorhead, a native of Pittsburgh, received an English degree from Fordham in 1996. He and his wife, Jennifer, have three children: daughter Kyra (11), son Mason (9) and son Donovan (4).

2013 Fordham Football Prospectus Fordham Football Spring Preview OFFENSE The 2013 Fordham offense will look to build on its record-setting performance last year, led by senior running back Carlton Koonce, who set the Fordham single season rushing mark. Fordham was second in the Patriot League in scoring offense (31.2 ppg), passing offense (279.6 yards/game), 18th best in the NCAA FCS, and total offense (435.7 yards/game). But the Rams will have to find a new starting quarterback after losing 2011 and 2012 starter Ryan Higgins to graduation. Quarterback Head coach Joe Moorhead, a former record-setting Ram quarterback, will have four quarterbacks available at spring practice, though two are returning from injury. Michael Nebrich, who was injured in the Cornell game last fall, and Griffin Murphy, who missed the entire season with an injury, return to the field as does Peter Maetzold and Nick Glogau. Nebrich, a transfer from UConn, shared the signal calling duties with Higgins for the first three games last year before suffering the injury. He rushed 36 times for 162 yards (4.5 yards/rush) and four touchdowns while also completing 14 of 23 passes for 105 yards and one score. Maetzold, who started the first Michael Nebrich four games of 2011, completed 70 of 117 passes for 668 yards and four touchdowns that season and appeared in three games last year for the Rams. Glogau and Hildebrandt did not see playing time in 2012. Running Backs The Rams return a wealth of talent at running back, led by Carlton Koonce, who set a school record with 1,596 rushing yards last year. He averaged 5.3 yards/carry and a Patriot League-best 145.1 yards/game, which was the fourth best in the NCAA FCS. Besides leading the league in rushing yards/game, Koonce also led the Patriot League, and was sixth in the NCAA FCS, in allpurpose yards/game (173.5). He also caught 48 passes, second best on the team, for 313 yards and two scores. Joining Koonce in the backfield this spring are Jared Crayton and Andrew Erenberg while Kevin Soares, Joe Stefanik and Kevin Scanlon will line up at fullback. Crayton rushed eleven times for 63 yards last fall (5.7 yards/carry) Carlton Koonce

while Erenberg had three rushes for nine yards. Wide Receivers The Rams have a wealth of talent at the wide receiver position, including the top three receivers from 2012. Back are Brian Wetzel and Dan Light, who with Koonce, finished as the top three receivers for the Rams in 2012. Also back are Sam Ajala, Marco Fragnito, Ben Johnson, Alex Leo, David Lulgjuraj, Tony Patrignelli and Andrew Spanarkel and they are joined this spring by transfers Tebucky Jones (UConn) and Marcus Jones (ASA) along with tight ends Adam Malkiewicz and Phazahn Odom. Last fall, Wetzel became just the third receiver in Fordham history to amass more than 1,000 receiving yards, catching 72 passes for 1,042 yards and seven touchdowns. He finished the year leading the Patriot League and ranking 18th in the NCAA FCS in receiving yards/game (94.7) and was ranked second in the Patriot Brian Wetzel League and ninth in the nation in all-purpose yards/game (167.3) as well as ranking third in the league in receptions/game (6.5), 22nd best in the NCAA FCS. Light hauled in 45 passes for 388 yards last fall, third best on the squad, while Ajala finished the year with eleven catches for 168 yards and one touchdown. Offensive Line The offense line lost three starters to graduation and will be a bit thin this spring due to injuries but the Rams have some young players who will look to fill the void. Fordham does return two starters from last year in Steven Tapia, who started every game at right guard and Mason Halter, who started the final seven games of the year at left tackle, along with Thomas Fisher, who has plenty of experience on the line. Also seeing time on the offensive line this spring are Tim Donahue, Garrick Mayweather, and Joseph Mizera while Kharome Kolb and Matt Stolte will work on recovering from injuries. Steven Tapia
2013 Fordham Football Prospectus Fordham Football Spring Preview DEFENSE The Fordham defense returns six starters, including five of the top six tacklers, as the Rams look to become more consistent on the defensive side of the ball under second-year coordinator David Blackwell. Defensive Line The Rams will have to replace two starters on the defensive line with returning starter DeAndre Slate being looked to for leadership. Last year. Slate led all Fordham defensive linemen with 46 total tackles, 30 solo, including five tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks and he also broke up two passes. Slate will be joined by returning veterans George Apostolopoulos, Will Bryant, Roman Herman, Nick Krejci, Anthony Pesanello, Damien Stevens and Eli Tenuta. Last fall, Tenuta, who moved over to the defensive line after starting his Fordham career at tight end, made 23 total tackles, 12 solo, including two for loss and 1.5 sacks, while Pesanello had six stops, four solo. DeAndre Slate Linebackers The linebacking corps suffered the biggest loss to graduation with the departure of Michael Martin, who led the Rams in total tackles the past two years. But the Rams return two other starters in Jake Rodriques and Austin Hancock, who finished three-four, respectively, in total tackles for the Rams in 2012. Rodriques made 81 total tackles last fall, 47 solo, including a team-high 95 for loss and 4.5 sacks, and he also intercepted a pass while Hancock made 68 total stops last year, 40 solo, including 3.5 for loss and one sack while also breaking up four passes and intercepting one. Along with the two returning starters, Fordham has a number of other linebackers returning with experience, including David Barletta, Brett Biestek, David Conroy, Victor DiFusco, Stephen Hodge, and Nick Merino. Last fall, Biestek recorded 22 total tackles, 15 solo, including 5.5 for loss and three sacks while Hodge made ten stops, eight solo, including 0.5 sacks.
Jake Rodriques
Defensive Backs Despite the loss of Brendan Melanophy to graduation, Fordham returns a plethora of experience in the defensive backfield, led by Ian Williams, a two-year starter at cornerback, who made 86 stops last year, second best on the team. Among his 86 tackles were a teamhigh 69 solo stops and he also intercepted five passes and broke up six, both team-highs. Other returning starters to the defensive backfield include Jake Ian Williams Dixon, who started every game at strong safety in 2012, and Jordan Chapman, who started eight games at cornerback. Dixon was fifth on the squad last fall with 55 total tackles, 36 solo, and he intercepted a pair of passes while Chapman notched 30 total tackles, 19 solo, and intercepted a pass which he returned 64 yards for a score. Other returning players with experience in the defensive backfield include JQ Bowers, Eric Darnell, Marc DeSisto, Nick DiFilippi, Kevin Dinnegan, Greg Goff, De’Nard Pinckney and Levon Williams while Lourenzo Smith moves to the defensive backfield after appearing at wide receiver the past two years. Pinckney, who appeared in all eleven games last year, made 24 tackles, 17 solo, while Levon Williams made eight solo stops and DeSisto finished with five tackles. SPECIAL TEAMS The Fordham special teams unit took a huge blow with the graduation of consensus All-American Patrick Murray. Murray had the most successful season for a Fordham kicker in school history last fall, leading all of the NCAA in field goals with 25 and leading the Patriot League and ranking second in the NCAA in punting average (46.0). He set a new Fordham and Patriot League record with 25 field goals, shattering the former mark of 18 set by Fordham’s Matt Fordyce in 2002. The 25 three-pointers was just one shy of the NCAA FCS record of 26 set by set by Tony Zendejas from Nevada in 1982 and matched by Northern Iowa’s Brian Mitchell in 1990. Over his career, Murray booted Michael Marando 38 field goals, sixth best all-time at Fordham. Returning at placekicker is Michael Marando, who connected on all 15 of his PATs in 2011 as well as booting seven field goals, the longest a 41-yarder at Georgetown, along with long snapper Joseph Sullivan, who has handled all the long snapping duties the past three years.
