2017 Fordham Football Prospectus Head Coach - Andrew Breiner When Fordham director of athletics Dave Roach had to search for his next head football coach it didn’t have to look far as Roach promoted Andrew Breiner, who served as the Fordham offensive coordinator/quarterback coach the previous four years, to head football coach for the Rams on December 17, 2015. Breiner replaced Joe Moorhead who resigned to take the position of offensive coordinator at Penn State. In his first year, Breiner led the Rams to another winning season as Fordham compiled an 8-3 overall mark, 5-1 in the Patriot League, marking the first time the Rams have posted five consecutive winning campaigns since 1938-1942. The eight wins were the most for a first-year Fordham head football coach in modern times. The 2016 Rams were led by a powerful offense, commanded by consensus All-American running back Chase Edmonds, who finished fourth in voting for the 2016 Walter Payton Award, presented to the NCAA FCS offensive player of the year. Edmonds led the NCAA FCS in rushing yards per game (163.5) and was second in total rushing yards as well as ranking second in all-purpose yards per game (194.6) and third in rushing touchdowns. The 1,799 yards was just 39 yards shy of Edmonds’ school single season record set in 2014. Edmonds was one of ten Rams to earn 2016 All-Patriot League honors, with four of those also being named to the ECAC All-Star Team. As a unit, the Fordham offense led the Patriot League and ranked fourth in the NCAA FCS in total offense, averaging 498.2 yards/game, and led the league and ranked 12th in the NCAA FCS in rushing offense, averaging 229.7 yards/game. The Rams also led the Patriot League and were fourth in the nation in scoring, averaging 40.1 points per game. Prior to being named head coach, Breiner, a 2006 graduate of Lock Haven (Pa.) University, served as the offensive coordinator for four years at Fordham after serving as a graduate assistant the previous three years with Moorhead at the University of Connecticut. Under his tutelage the Fordham offense ranked at the top of the NCAA FCS in each of his four years as offensive coordinator. In 2015, the Rams led the Patriot League and were ninth in the NCAA FCS in scoring, averaging 36.8 points per game, and led the league and were second in the NCAA FCS in passing efficiency (168.30). Fordham was also second in the league and 20th in the NCAA FCS in passing yards/game (272.3), 19th in the NCAA FCS in first downs and third in the conference and 42nd in the NCAA FCS in rushing yards/game (180.9). Two members of the 2015 Fordham offense earned All-America honors, sophomore running back Chase Edmonds and senior lineman Garrick Mayweather, Jr., while two other members of the offense joined Edmonds and Mayweather in earning All-Patriot League accolades. Edmonds was also
8
named the 2015 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year. In 2014, the Fordham offense enjoyed another record-breaking season with seven offensive players earning All-America honors and ten receiving All-Patriot League accolades, including quarterback Mike Nebrich, who was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. The 2014 Fordham offense set school marks for rushing yards with 2,353, shattering the former mark of 2,162 set in 2013, and scoring with 569 points, surpassing the 2013 record of 526. Included in the scoring total was a schoolrecord 31 rushing touchdowns. Freshman running back Chase Edmonds did most of the damage on the ground, gaining 1,838 yards with 23 touchdowns, both school records. The Rams led the Patriot League in passing offense, total offense and scoring offense while on the national level the Rams ranked fourth in passing offense (326.1 yards/game) in the NCAA FCS and ranked among the top ten in scoring offense (40.6 points/game – fifth), team passing efficiency (156.23 – third), total offense (494.1 yards/game – seventh) and first downs (331 ninth). For the second straight year, Fordham had a 1,000 rusher (Edmonds) and three 1,000-yard receivers (Brian Wetzel, Tebucky Jones, Jr., and Sam Ajala). In 2013, Breiner’s passing unit saw unparalleled success, leading the NCAA FCS in pass completion percentage (.706) with quarterback Mike Nebrich, the 2013 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, leading the way, ranking first in the nation in pass completion percentage (.735) and total offense (376.4 yards/game), second in passing efficiency (171.3) and third in passing yards/game (336.9), passing touchdowns (35) and completions per game (27.15). Nebrich set school single season records for completions, passing yards and passing touchdowns. With the success of the passing game came recognition of the Fordham wide receivers as Sam Ajala was named All-America and First Team All-Patriot League as was tight end Dan Light, while Tebucky Jones, Jr., and Brian Wetzel were both named Second Team All-Patriot League. Ajala set school records for most receiving yards in a season (1,646) and tied the record with 14 receiving touchdowns (as did Wetzel) while Light set the mark for most receptions in a season by a tight end (66). In 2012, Breiner led a Fordham offense that ranked second in the Patriot League in scoring offense (31.2 ppg), passing offense (279.6 yards/game) and total offense (435.7 yards/game). Additionally, the Rams were ranked 18th in the NCAA FCS in passing offense as quarterback Ryan Higgins threw for 2,940 yards, the fourth best single season for a Fordham quarterback in school history. At UConn, Breiner worked with the offensive staff in all phases of research and development, coaching and game planning as well as working individually with the quarterbacks and wide receivers in 2009 and 2010 and the quarterbacks and running backs in 2011. He also had special teams responsibilities with the kickoff and kickoff return units. While at Connecticut, Breiner was part of the staff that helped the Huskies to the 2010 BIG EAST championship and an appearance in the 2011 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. In 2010, UConn appeared in the PapaJohns.com Bowl and received the Lambert Trophy, presented annually to the best team in the Northeast in Division I FBS college football. Prior to his stay at UConn, Breiner was an assistant coach at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., for two seasons. He worked with the quarterbacks in 2008 and the wide receivers in 2007. He began his coaching career in 2006 at Lock Haven University, when he sustained a career-ending injury midway through his senior year and began working with the wide receivers. A Dean’s List student, Breiner graduated in 2006 from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania with a degree in health and physical education. He was a four-year letter winner with the Bald Eagles as a wide receiver and also played special teams. Breiner won a National Football Foundation ScholarAthlete Award from the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the NFF for his accomplishments athletically, academically and in the community. Breiner and his wife, Kelly, are the parents of a two-year-old daughter, Abigail.
2017 Fordham Football Prospectus Fordham Football Spring Preview As Fordham head coach Andrew Breiner enters his second year of spring practices he has to like what he sees as the Rams returns 14 starters to a squad that went 8-3 last year, 5-1 in the Patriot League. Both sides of the ball are returning key starters, including three-time All-America running back Chase Edmonds, who was a consensus first team All-American selection last fall, and quarterback Kevin Anderson, who has thrown for 59 touchdown over the past two years, while on the defensive side, three of the four starters in the backfield return, led by All-Patriot League pick Caleb Ham. Here is a position-by-position breakdown as the Rams head into spring practice: Quarterback Senior Kevin Anderson had another outstanding season for the Rams in 2016, completing 201 of 325 passes for 2,724 yards and 27 touchdowns as well as running for 255 net yards and two scores. He led the Patriot League and was tenth in the NCAA FCS in passing touchdowns and led the League and was 12th in the nation in passing yards/game (272.4). Anderson, a second team All-Patriot League pick last year, also led the conference and was 21st in the NCAA FCS in total passing yards and led the league and was seventh in the country in points responsible/game (17.6). Over his Fordham career, Anderson, a two-year starter, has completed 430 of 667 passes for 5,907 yards and 59 touchdowns. He ranks fifth on the Fordham career passing yards list and third on the career passing touchdown list while his career completion percentage of Kevin Anderson 64.5 percent is fourth best. Joining Anderson are senior Luke Medlock, who completed 15 of 28 passes for 196 yards and three scores last year, along with senior Clayton Welsh and juniors Jalen Ollie and Colton Smith. Running Back Fordham fans will get one last look at senior All-American running back Chase Edmonds in 2017 as he looks to build on his impressive record-setting career. Last year, Edmonds, who finished fourth in voting for the 2016 Walter Payton Award, led the NCAA FCS in rushing yards per game (163.5) and was second in total rushing yards as well as ranking second in all-purpose yards per game (194.6) and third in rushing touchdowns. The 1,799 yards was just 39 yards
Chase Edmonds
shy of Edmonds’ school single season record set in 2014. Over his three-year career, Edmonds has rushed for a school record 5,285 yards, just 336 yards shy of Jordan Scott’s Patriot League career record of 5,621 yards. He has 62 career rushing touchdowns and 69 overall career touchdowns, both school and Patriot League records. The offensive backfield is bolstered by senior Jarred Brevard and sophomore D’Angelo Palladino. Wide Receivers/Tight Ends Anderson will have plenty of Austin Longi familiar faces to throw to as the Rams return three of the top four receivers from 2016, led by junior Austin Longi, a second team All-Patriot League selection in 2016 who hauled in 59 passes for 774 yards, both team-highs, and six scores. He was fifth in the Patriot League in receiving yards/game (70.4), receiving touchdowns and receptions/game (5.3). Joining Longi at wide out is junior Corey Caddle, who caught 32 passes for 368 yards (11.5 yards/ reception) and four touchdowns last fall, while junior tight end Isaiah Searight, who earned second team All-Patriot League honors last year, also returns after catching 13 passes for 181 yards and two scores. Also returning at wide receiver Corey Caddle are juniors Jordan Allen, who caught five passes for 135 yards and one score last fall, and Jonathan Lumley, who had five receptions in 2016 for 86 yards before suffering a season-ending injury. Also back are juniors Noah Nix, Andrew Prince and Dan Halligan and sophomores Jonah Isaac while at tight end senior James Orfini and junior Andrew Force return. Offensive Line The Rams return three of the five starting offensive linemen from 2016, a group that helped the Rams lead the Patriot League and rank fourth in the NCAA FCS in total offense, averaging 498.2 yards/ game, and lead the league and rank 12th in the NCAA FCS in rushing offense, averaging 229.7 yards/

game. The Rams also led the Patriot League and were fourth in the nation in scoring, averaging 40.1 points per game. Leading the offensive line are seniors Anthony Coyle, a first team All-Patriot League pick at left tackle in 2016, and senior center Ben Hartman, a second team All-League selection last fall. The third returning starter is senior Garrett Donaldson, who started seven games at right guard last year, while junior Dominic Lombard, who started five games at
left guard in 2016, is back. Also back are juniors Dominic Lombard, Tristan Nevotne and Charlie Murray and sophomore Marcel Deya, Alex Hall and Anthony Solano. Defensive Line On the defensive side of the ball the Rams return two starters on the line in senior tackle Nick Angeli, who notched 17 tackles in 2016 after being elevated to starter due to injuries on the line, and senior end Ty Green, who made 26 stops last year including four for loss, along with senior Manny Adeyeye, who made 16 tackles, including 3.0 sacks last fall. Senior Jonathan Ty Green Dimon, juniors JM Nocket and Erik Rottsolk and sophomore Michael Ware also add experience to the defensive line. Senior John O’Boyle and sophomores Matt D’Andrea and Johnny Piccinich also return to the line.

Linebackers The Rams’ biggest losses to graduation occurred at the linebacker position where George Dawson, a second team All-Patriot League player last fall, and David Barletta are gone. But senior Niko Thorpe, who was limited to five games in 2016 by injury, and junior Noah Fitzgerald, who started at one of the outside linebacker spots last year, are both back while junior Jarod Vyent and sophomore Max Roberts bring plenty of experience to the linebacking corps. Roberts
made 45 tackles last year, including 9.5 for loss and 4.5 sacks, while also recording nine quarterback hurries and forcing three fumbles, while Fitzgerald finished the year with 33 stops, including 3.5 for loss, broke up four passes and recovered four fumbles. Others who return to the position include senior Vincent Sansone and juniors Chris Geissler, Kyle Cook and Zurab Akirtava Max Roberts Defensive Backs Fordham returns three of the four starters in the defensive backfield, led by senior Caleb Ham, a first team All-Patriot League selection, who was second on the team last year with 62 total tackles, and tied for the team lead with three interceptions. He is joined by junior safety Antonio Jackson, who was third on the team last fall with 56 total tackles while also intercepting two passes, and junior cornerback Dylan Maybin, who made 42 tackles last year. Junior Lawrence Menyah, who finished with 37 tackles in 2016, and juniors Tyler Long and James Biggs-Frazier, along with sophomore Jesse Bramble also bring experience to the defensive backfield. Others who return to the defensive backfield with experience include seniors Marcus Hicks, who missed last year with an injury, and Caleb Ham
Conor Cassidy, junior Bryce Petty and sophomore Jordan Burg. Kickers The Rams will be looking for a new punter and placekicker with the graduation of Joe Pavlik and Makay Redd. For spring ball the Rams have three kickers on the roster, led by senior Alejandro Cardenas (3-for-3 PATs), along with junior Kyle Facibene and sophomore Jacob Rocchi.
