Series: First Meeting Lady Bears Open 2013 Season Out West In Arizona Invitational The Morgan State volleyball team will kick off its 2013 campaign on the road this weekend (Aug. 30-31) when the squad travels to Tuscon, Ariz. to compete in the Arizona Invitational. The Lady Bears will begin the two-day tournament on Friday, Aug. 30 against host Arizona at 1 p.m. PST. Morgan State will then face No. 20 Kansas on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 12:30 p.m. PST, before closing out the weekend later that day against Central Arkansas at 4:30 p.m. PST. All matches will be played at McKale Memorial Center. Last season the Lady Bears finished 5-21 overall, 4-8 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and finished in fifth-place in the MEAC North Division. Morgan State returns nine letterwinners, including six starters from a year ago. The Wildcats of Arizona went 16-15 last season and were 8-12 in the Pac-12 Conference, while Kansas finished with a 26-7 overall record, including 12-4 in the Big 12 Conference and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Jayhawks also ended the season with a No. 25 ranking. Central Arkansas finished with an impressive 30-5 record and was 15-3 in the Southland Conference. The Sugar Bears, who last season set the school record for wins, while capturing their first league tournament title, also made the program’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament. MSU VS. ARIZONA SERIES NOTES: This will be the first meeting between the two teams. MSU VS. KANSAS SERIES NOTES: This will be the first meeting between the two teams. MSU VS. NEXT UP: Morgan State will head to Greenville, N.C. to take part in the East Carolina Classic (Sept. 6-7). OPENING SERVE: Morgan State is 8-12 in season openers since the 1993 season. Last season the Lady Bears had their two match winning streak in season openers snapped, following a 3-0 home loss to St. John’s in the opening round of the Battle at the Bay. MORGAN PICKED FIFTH IN MEAC NORTH: Morgan State was picked to finish fifth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) preseason poll, as voted by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Last year, the Lady Bears were picked to finish third, but finished the season at 5-21 overall, 4-8 in the MEAC and finished fifth. 2013 CAPTAINS NAMED: Senior Janelle Wilson and junior Tamara Leslie were named team captain and co-captain, respectively, for the 2013 season. Wilson, a native of Avondale, Ariz., served as co-captain last season and led the team in blocks with 70. A native of Landover, Md., Leslie led the team in digs a year ago with 228 and in service aces with 25.

BOZIER 12 SHY OF WIN NO. 400: MSU head coach Ramona RileyBozier enters her 26th season at the helm of the Lady Bears’ program and is 12 wins shy from reaching 400 career victories. Riley-Bozier, who is the winningest coach in any sport at Morgan State, also ranks 43rd in career victories (388) on the NCAA list of active volleyball coaches. WILSON CLOSING IN ON 10TH IN BLOCKS: Janelle Wilson enters the season with 153 career blocks, 12 shy of moving into 10th all-time at Morgan State. Wilson, who has led the Lady Bears in blocks the past two seasons, currently ranks 11th behind former Lady Bear, O’Tasha Williams (164 blocks from 2005-06). CHAFEH MOVING UP CAREER CHARTS: Senior Ngebui (Natalie) Chafeh enters the 2013 campaign with 1,526 career assists, which ranks fifth all-time at Morgan State. Chafeh is just two assists shy of surpassing former Lady Bear, Junel Jeffries (1,527 assists from 2003-04). SEVEN NAMED TO MEAC ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM: Morgan State had seven players named to the MEAC Volleyball All-Academic Team during the 2012-13 school year. The seven players named tied MEAC foe Hampton for the most. Three of those seven recognized (Tamara Leslie, Zuri Smith and Janelle Wilson) return for the 2013 season.

SOMEONE NEW: Morgan State has four opponents on its schedule (Arizona, Kansas, Central Arkansas and Citadel) which it has never faced in the program’s history.

WELCOME TO THE CAVE: Morgan State will welcome the addition of five newcomers to the 2013 squad, all of which are freshmen. Those rookies are: Haley McClure (Ashburn, Va.), Raquel Shortt (Bowie, Md.), Anneka Harris (Kingston, Jamaica), Torian Leslie (Landover, Md.) and Shanotta Bawek (Apple Valley, Minn.).

I’M COMING HOME: Morgan State’s season opening trip to Tuscon, Ariz. will mark a homecoming of sorts for senior captain Janelle Wilson, who lives in Avondale, Ariz., which is two hours away from Tuscon.

SAYING GOODBYE: Morgan State will say goodbye to its two seniors, Ngebui (Natalie) Chafeh and Janelle Wilson prior to its home finale ‘Senior Night’ match against Howard (11/8).

UNBEATEN STREAKS ON THE LINE: The Lady Bears enter the season with a perfect record against two of this season’s opponents in Providence (2-0) and St. Francis-N.Y. (4-0). Morgan State will square off against both of these non-conference foes during the Ninth Annual Friar Classic (Sept. 20-21), hosted by Providence.

2013 MEAC TOURNAMENT: The 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference volleyball tournament is scheduled for March 11-16 at the Physical Education Complex on the campus of Coppin State in Baltimore, Md.

TOURNAMENT EXPOSURE: Three of Morgan State’s opponents (Kansas, Central Arkansas and Maryland Eastern Shore) were in the 2012 NCAA Volleyball Tournament.
