Series: George Mason leads, 1-0 Volleyball Closes Out 2014 Tournament Schedule At Red Flash Classic The Morgan State volleyball team will close out its regular season tournament slate this weekend when it travels to Lorreto, Pa. to take part in the Red Flash Classic, hosted by Saint Francis-Pa. The Lady Bears open up against the host Red Flash on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m., before taking on local foe, Loyola Maryland on Saturday at 11 a.m., and George Mason at 5 p.m. All matches will be played at Degol Arena. The Lady Bears (5-5), who are coming off a 3-0 weekend, captured the Friar Classic (9/12-13). It was their first regular season tournament title since 2004. Morgan State defeated host Providence in four sets, before sweeping both Quinnipiac and Fairleigh Dickinson. Morgan State was led by Arianna Hayden, who tallied 36 kills, 29 digs, 14 blocks, five service aces and two assists. Hayden would earn MVP honors, which was her third consecutive alltournament honor this season. Carmen Fernandez also received all-tournament team honors after totaling 111 assists, 24 digs, eight kills, four aces, two blocks and recording two double-doubles. MSU AGAINST THE FIELD: The Morgan State volleyball team will meet host Saint FrancisPa., for the eighth time with the Lady Bears holding a 5-2 all-time advantage...Local foe Loyola Maryland and Morgan State will be meeting for the 27th time with the series tied at 1313...George Mason and Morgan State will meet for the just the second time in program history, as the Patriots hold a 1-0 lead. NEXT UP: The Lady Bears will welcome crosstown rival Coppin State to Hill Field House for the MEAC opener next Friday, Sept. 26. HAYDEN NAMED MEAC CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Arianna Hayden was named MEAC Co-Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Sept. 15. This was the first MEAC honor of the season for Hayden. Hayden, who is off to her best season yet as a Lady Bear, totaled 36 kills, 29 digs, 14 blocks and five service aces in three matches. TRACKING SMITH: Senior Zuri Smith entered the season ranked 11th all-time at Morgan State with 177 career blocks. A native of Inglewood, Calif., Smith tallied 10 blocks at the Friar Classic (Sept. 12-13), giving her 191 for her career. Smith is four blocks away from passing former Lady Bear, Dorothy Buford (194 blocks from 1997-00) for 10th-place. HAYDEN SETS CAREER-HIGH IN BLOCKS: Arianna Hayden set a career-high six blocks against Providence (9/12), then added another six blocks against Fairleigh Dickinson (9/13) in the finale of the Friar Classic. LADY BEARS CLAIM FRIAR CLASSIC TITLE: The Lady Bears captured the 2014 Friar Classic (Sept. 12-13) with a perfect 3-0 mark. The Lady Bears lost just one set out of the 10 sets they played, defeating host Providence (3-1), Quinnipiac (3-0) and Fairleigh Dickinson (3-0). It was the first regular season tournament title for Morgan State since winning the same tournament in 2004, which was then called the Providence Invitational. HAYDEN NAMED MVP OF FRIAR CLASSIC: Arianna Hayden was named MVP of the Friar Classic (9/13), after totaling 36 kills, 29 digs, 14 blocks, five service aces and two assists to lead the Lady Bears to a 3-0 week and the tournament title. Hayden began the tournament recording a double-double with a team-high 13 kills to go with a team-high 14 digs and totaled a career– and match-high six blocks, while hitting a weekendbest .417 percentage against host Providence. Hayden then closed out the tournament with a hitting percentage of .400 and finished with a matchhigh 15 kills, eight digs and six blocks in the finale win against Fairleigh Dickinson. It was the third consecutive tournament team honor this season for Hayden. FERNANDEZ NAMED TO ALL-FRIAR CLASSIC TEAM: Junior setter Carmen Fernandez was named to the Friar Classic All-Tournament Team (9/13). Fernandez recorded two double-doubles over the weekend, while totaling 111 assists, 24 digs, eight kills, four aces and two blocks to help the Lady Bears to a 3-0 weekend and the Friar Classic championship. A native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Fernandez notched her fourth doubledouble of the season with a match-high 45 assists and 10 digs, along with two kills and two service aces in the finale against Fairleigh Dickinson.
JONES SETS CAREER HIGHS: Dinah Jones hit for a career-high 1.000 hitting percentage, going a perfect 7-for-7 in kills in a sweep of Quinnipiac (9/13) during the Friar Classic. Jones followed up that performance by recording a career-high 10 kills and adding two blocks in another sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson. BEST SINCE 1996: Morgan State’s 5-5 record through this season’s first 10 matches is its best start since the 1996 team held a 7-3 mark at this point. That squad would finish with a 25-9 record and would reach the MEAC championship match. MORGAN REMAINS UNDEFEATED: The Lady Bears improved their record to 4-0 all-time against Providence, following a 3-1 victory in the opener of the Friar Classic (9/12). Entering this season, Providence was the only team on the schedule the Lady Bears had yet to drop a match against. ANOTHER ALL-TOURNAMENT HONOR FOR HAYDEN: Morgan State’s Arianna Hayden was named to the East Carolina Invitational AllTournament team on Saturday, Sept. 6. It was the second straight alltournament team honor this season for Hayden, who the previous week was named to the Charlotte Invitational team (Aug. 30). The 5-foot-9 junior out of Chicago, tallied 30 kills, 19 digs, three blocks, two service aces and two assists in three matches. Hayden recorded 15 kills, seven digs and a service ace in a tough five-set loss in the finale to host East Carolina (Sept. 6). FERNANDEZ SETS SEASON-HIGH IN ASSISTS: Junior transfer Carmen Fernandez notched a season-best 46 assists in the Lady Bears’ five -set loss to host East Carolina during the finale of the East Carolina Invitational (9/6). Her total surpassed the 45 assists she recorded in a win over Sacramento State (8/30) in the Charlotte Invitational. THAT’S A FIRST: The Lady Bears’ 3-1 victory over Sacramento State (Aug. 30) on Day 2 of the Charlotte Invitational, was Morgan State’s first win ever over the Hornets in the series’ four meetings. HAYDEN EARNS ALL-CHARLOTTE INVITATIONAL HONORS: The Lady Bears’ Arianna Hayden was named to the Charlotte Invitational All-Tournament team on Saturday, Aug. 30. A junior from Chicago, Ill., Hayden tied a team-high 37 kills, while adding 24 digs, six blocks and three service aces in four matches. She totaled 11 kills, sight digs and four blocks in a 3-1 victory over Sacramento State (Aug. 30). It was Morgan State’s first win over the Hornets in the series’ four meetings. MORGAN PICKED FOURTH IN MEAC NORTH: Morgan State was picked to finish fourth in the north division of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) preseason poll, as voted by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Last year, the Lady Bears were picked to finish fifth, but finished the season at 12-13 overall, 7-5 in the MEAC and finished fifth.

2014 CAPTAINS NAMED: Seniors Zuri Smith and Tamara Leslie were named team captain and co-captain, respectively, for the 2014 season. Smith, a native of Inglewood, Calif., finished second on the team in both kills (206) and blocks (73) last season, while earning All-MEAC third team honors. A native of Landover, Md., Leslie finished third on the team in digs a year ago with 216. RETURN TRIPS: The Morgan State volleyball team will make return trips for the second consecutive year to compete in both the East Carolina Invitational in Greenville, N.C. (Sept. 5-6) and the 10th Annual Friar Classic in Providence, R.I. (Sept. 12-13). Last season the Lady Bears struggled at the East Carolina tournament, going 1-2. Two weeks later Morgan State recorded a 2 -1 record while in Providence, and finished in second-place. TOURNAMENT EXPOSURE: Last season the Lady Bears faced four opponents (Arizona, Central Arkansas, Hampton, Kansas) who all reached the 2013 NCAA Volleyball Tournament. Defending MEAC champion Hampton is the only opponent on this year’s schedule who reached the 2013 NCAA Volleyball Tournament. Morgan State, faces the Lady Pirates on Sept. 28 at Hill Field House, before traveling to Hampton, Va. for a match on Oct. 26. INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR: The 2014 Morgan State volleyball roster will feature four players (Samantha Prescott, Minja Rankov, Evely Macedo and Carmen Fernandez) who hail from outside the United States. It is the most international players ever on a Morgan State volleyball roster at one time in Riley-Bozier’s 27 years as head coach. Prescott is a junior returnee out of Trinidad & Tobago. Rankov is a sophomore transfer out of Nova Sad, Serbia and Macedo is a junior transfer out of Fortaleza, Brazil. While Puerto Rico is a US territory, Fernandez, a junior transfer and a native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, is just the second volleyball player from Puerto Rico to play for Riley-Bozier at Morgan State. BOZIER PICKS UP CAREER WIN 400: Morgan State head coach Ramona Riley-Bozier collected her 400th career coaching victory after the Lady Bears earned a 3-1 victory at Delaware State on Nov. 3, 2013. Coach Bozier, who is the winningest coach of all-time in any sport at Morgan State, has a career record of 405-407. She entered the 2014 season ranked 45th amongst active NCAA Division I coaches. OPENING SERVE: Morgan State is 8-14 in season openers since the 1993 season, after dropping this year’s opener to East Tennessee State (8/29) during the Charlotte Invitational. The Lady Bears, who have now lost three consecutive season openers, last won an opening day match in 2011 when they defeated Saint Peter’s 3-0 at the La Salle Invitational (8/26/11). SOMEONE NEW: Morgan State’s season-opener against East Tennessee State on August 29 in the opener of the Charlotte Invitational, marked the first meeting between the two programs. The Lady Bears would drop the contest, 3-0. FOUR NAMED TO MEAC ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM: Morgan State had four players named to the MEAC Volleyball All-Academic Team during the 2013-14 school year. Three of the four recognized (Shayna Hunt-Colon, Tamara Leslie, Zuri Smith) return for the 2014 season. WELCOME TO THE CAVE: The Lady Bears will welcome the addition of six newcomers to the 2014 squad, three of which are freshman, two junior transfers and a sophomore transfer. Those newcomers are juniors Evely Macedo (Fortaleza, Brazil) and Carmen Fernandez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico), sophomore Minja Rankov (Nova Sad, Serbia) and freshmen Lexus Spears (Jacksonville, Fla.), Michaela Collins (Sacramento, Calif.) and Keana Browne (Virginia Beach, Va.). SAYING GOODBYE: The Morgan State volleyball team will say goodbye to its two seniors, Tamara Leslie and Zuri Smith prior to its home finale ‘Senior Night’ match against Howard (11/7). 2014 MEAC TOURNAMENT: The 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference volleyball tournament is scheduled for March 21-23 at the Physical Education Complex on the campus of Coppin State in Baltimore, Md.

Series: George Mason leads, 1-0 Volleyball Closes Out 2014 Tournament Schedule At Red Flash Classic The Morgan State volleyball team will close out its regular season tournament slate this weekend when it travels to Lorreto, Pa. to take part in the Red Flash Classic, hosted by Saint Francis-Pa. The Lady Bears open up against the host Red Flash on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m., before taking on local foe, Loyola Maryland on Saturday at 11 a.m., and George Mason at 5 p.m. All matches will be played at Degol Arena. The Lady Bears (5-5), who are coming off a 3-0 weekend, captured the Friar Classic (9/12-13). It was their first regular season tournament title since 2004. Morgan State defeated host Providence in four sets, before sweeping both Quinnipiac and Fairleigh Dickinson. Morgan State was led by Arianna Hayden, who tallied 36 kills, 29 digs, 14 blocks, five service aces and two assists. Hayden would earn MVP honors, which was her third consecutive alltournament honor this season. Carmen Fernandez also received all-tournament team honors after totaling 111 assists, 24 digs, eight kills, four aces, two blocks and recording two double-doubles. MSU AGAINST THE FIELD: The Morgan State volleyball team will meet host Saint FrancisPa., for the eighth time with the Lady Bears holding a 5-2 all-time advantage...Local foe Loyola Maryland and Morgan State will be meeting for the 27th time with the series tied at 1313...George Mason and Morgan State will meet for the just the second time in program history, as the Patriots hold a 1-0 lead. HAYDEN NAMED MEAC CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Arianna Hayden was named MEAC Co-Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Sept. 15. This was the first MEAC honor of the season for Hayden. Hayden, who is off to her best season yet as a Lady Bear, totaled 36 kills, 29 digs, 14 blocks and five service aces in three matches. TRACKING SMITH: Senior Zuri Smith entered the season ranked 11th all-time at Morgan State with 177 career blocks. A native of Inglewood, Calif., Smith tallied 10 blocks at the Friar Classic (Sept. 12-13), giving her 191 for her career. Smith is four blocks away from passing former Lady Bear, Dorothy Buford (194 blocks from 1997-00) for 10th-place. HAYDEN SETS CAREER-HIGH IN BLOCKS: Arianna Hayden set a career-high six blocks against Providence (9/12), then added another six blocks against Fairleigh Dickinson (9/13) in the finale of the Friar Classic. LADY BEARS CLAIM FRIAR CLASSIC TITLE: The Lady Bears captured the 2014 Friar Classic (Sept. 12-13) with a perfect 3-0 mark. The Lady Bears lost just one set out of the 10 sets they played, defeating host Providence (3-1), Quinnipiac (3-0) and Fairleigh Dickinson (3-0). It was the first regular season tournament title for Morgan State since winning the same tournament in 2004, which was then called the Providence Invitational. HAYDEN NAMED MVP OF FRIAR CLASSIC: Arianna Hayden was named MVP of the Friar Classic (9/13), after totaling 36 kills, 29 digs, 14 blocks, five service aces and two assists to lead the Lady Bears to a 3-0 week and the tournament title. Hayden began the tournament recording a double-double with a team-high 13 kills to go with a team-high 14 digs and totaled a career– and match-high six blocks, while hitting a weekendbest .417 percentage against host Providence. Hayden then closed out the tournament with a hitting percentage of .400 and finished with a matchhigh 15 kills, eight digs and six blocks in the finale win against Fairleigh Dickinson. It was the third consecutive tournament team honor this season for Hayden. FERNANDEZ NAMED TO ALL-FRIAR CLASSIC TEAM: Junior setter Carmen Fernandez was named to the Friar Classic All-Tournament Team (9/13). Fernandez recorded two double-doubles over the weekend, while totaling 111 assists, 24 digs, eight kills, four aces and two blocks to help the Lady Bears to a 3-0 weekend and the Friar Classic championship. A native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Fernandez notched her fourth doubledouble of the season with a match-high 45 assists and 10 digs, along with two kills and two service aces in the finale against Fairleigh Dickinson.
JONES SETS CAREER HIGHS: Dinah Jones hit for a career-high 1.000 hitting percentage, going a perfect 7-for-7 in kills in a sweep of Quinnipiac (9/13) during the Friar Classic. Jones followed up that performance by recording a career-high 10 kills and adding two blocks in another sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson. BEST SINCE 1996: Morgan State’s 5-5 record through this season’s first 10 matches is its best start since the 1996 team held a 7-3 mark at this point. That squad would finish with a 25-9 record and would reach the MEAC championship match. MORGAN REMAINS UNDEFEATED: The Lady Bears improved their record to 4-0 all-time against Providence, following a 3-1 victory in the opener of the Friar Classic (9/12). Entering this season, Providence was the only team on the schedule the Lady Bears had yet to drop a match against. ANOTHER ALL-TOURNAMENT HONOR FOR HAYDEN: Morgan State’s Arianna Hayden was named to the East Carolina Invitational AllTournament team on Saturday, Sept. 6. It was the second straight alltournament team honor this season for Hayden, who the previous week was named to the Charlotte Invitational team (Aug. 30). The 5-foot-9 junior out of Chicago, tallied 30 kills, 19 digs, three blocks, two service aces and two assists in three matches. Hayden recorded 15 kills, seven digs and a service ace in a tough five-set loss in the finale to host East Carolina (Sept. 6). FERNANDEZ SETS SEASON-HIGH IN ASSISTS: Junior transfer Carmen Fernandez notched a season-best 46 assists in the Lady Bears’ five -set loss to host East Carolina during the finale of the East Carolina Invitational (9/6). Her total surpassed the 45 assists she recorded in a win over Sacramento State (8/30) in the Charlotte Invitational. THAT’S A FIRST: The Lady Bears’ 3-1 victory over Sacramento State (Aug. 30) on Day 2 of the Charlotte Invitational, was Morgan State’s first win ever over the Hornets in the series’ four meetings. HAYDEN EARNS ALL-CHARLOTTE INVITATIONAL HONORS: The Lady Bears’ Arianna Hayden was named to the Charlotte Invitational All-Tournament team on Saturday, Aug. 30. A junior from Chicago, Ill., Hayden tied a team-high 37 kills, while adding 24 digs, six blocks and three service aces in four matches. She totaled 11 kills, sight digs and four blocks in a 3-1 victory over Sacramento State (Aug. 30). It was Morgan State’s first win over the Hornets in the series’ four meetings. MORGAN PICKED FOURTH IN MEAC NORTH: Morgan State was picked to finish fourth in the north division of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) preseason poll, as voted by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Last year, the Lady Bears were picked to finish fifth, but finished the season at 12-13 overall, 7-5 in the MEAC and finished fifth.

2014 CAPTAINS NAMED: Seniors Zuri Smith and Tamara Leslie were named team captain and co-captain, respectively, for the 2014 season. Smith, a native of Inglewood, Calif., finished second on the team in both kills (206) and blocks (73) last season, while earning All-MEAC third team honors. A native of Landover, Md., Leslie finished third on the team in digs a year ago with 216. RETURN TRIPS: The Morgan State volleyball team will make return trips for the second consecutive year to compete in both the East Carolina Invitational in Greenville, N.C. (Sept. 5-6) and the 10th Annual Friar Classic in Providence, R.I. (Sept. 12-13). Last season the Lady Bears struggled at the East Carolina tournament, going 1-2. Two weeks later Morgan State recorded a 2 -1 record while in Providence, and finished in second-place. TOURNAMENT EXPOSURE: Last season the Lady Bears faced four opponents (Arizona, Central Arkansas, Hampton, Kansas) who all reached the 2013 NCAA Volleyball Tournament. Defending MEAC champion Hampton is the only opponent on this year’s schedule who reached the 2013 NCAA Volleyball Tournament. Morgan State, faces the Lady Pirates on Sept. 28 at Hill Field House, before traveling to Hampton, Va. for a match on Oct. 26. INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR: The 2014 Morgan State volleyball roster will feature four players (Samantha Prescott, Minja Rankov, Evely Macedo and Carmen Fernandez) who hail from outside the United States. It is the most international players ever on a Morgan State volleyball roster at one time in Riley-Bozier’s 27 years as head coach. Prescott is a junior returnee out of Trinidad & Tobago. Rankov is a sophomore transfer out of Nova Sad, Serbia and Macedo is a junior transfer out of Fortaleza, Brazil. While Puerto Rico is a US territory, Fernandez, a junior transfer and a native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, is just the second volleyball player from Puerto Rico to play for Riley-Bozier at Morgan State. BOZIER PICKS UP CAREER WIN 400: Morgan State head coach Ramona Riley-Bozier collected her 400th career coaching victory after the Lady Bears earned a 3-1 victory at Delaware State on Nov. 3, 2013. Coach Bozier, who is the winningest coach of all-time in any sport at Morgan State, has a career record of 405-407. She entered the 2014 season ranked 45th amongst active NCAA Division I coaches. OPENING SERVE: Morgan State is 8-14 in season openers since the 1993 season, after dropping this year’s opener to East Tennessee State (8/29) during the Charlotte Invitational. The Lady Bears, who have now lost three consecutive season openers, last won an opening day match in 2011 when they defeated Saint Peter’s 3-0 at the La Salle Invitational (8/26/11). SOMEONE NEW: Morgan State’s season-opener against East Tennessee State on August 29 in the opener of the Charlotte Invitational, marked the first meeting between the two programs. The Lady Bears would drop the contest, 3-0. FOUR NAMED TO MEAC ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM: Morgan State had four players named to the MEAC Volleyball All-Academic Team during the 2013-14 school year.
