Tech Notes 2013 Pinot Gris CHEHALEM MOUNTAINS AVA Carabella Estate

Carabella Vineyard: Our 59 acre estate vineyard

benefits from the stony volcanic soils and cool climate in the Chehalem Mountains. Each of the sixteen blocks are picked at their peak, fermented and barreled separately. The complex final blends reflect our terroir and minimalist winemaking philosophy. The vineyard is dry farmed and certified sustainable.

Vineyard Blocks: Two blocks of pinot gris are

planted in Jory soil in the southwest corner of the vineyard at 550’ elevation. The earlier ripening 146 clone contributes lively fruit and high toned aromatics. The 152 clone, which is darker and more tannic, is harvested later.

Weather: Budbreak on April 7th was early. Warm

weather allowed early bloom in the first week of June. Sunny dry weather persisted until the first pick on September 28 of the 146. Then came a bit of rain followed by sunny days. The 152 was harvested under sunny skies on October 2nd.

Vinification: The 146 was slow fermented at low

temperature in stainless steel, along with 1/3 of the 152. The rest of the 152 was fermented in neutral barrels (30% of the blend), aging sur lie to gain body and spice.

Tasting Notes: Classic floral and Asian pear on the

nose. Clean crisp entry with grapefruit overtones, with stone fruit on the mid-palate. The refreshing finish shows a bit of minerality. Alcohol: 13.5%
