2013 Refining & Energy Companies of the Year On behalf of FUEL Magazine, Hart Energy Consulting and everyone at Hart Energy Publishing, LP, we will warmly congratulate this year’s recipients of the FUEL Magazine Refining & Energy Company of the Year Awards during the event on March 20, 2013 in San Antonio, Texas, USA. These companies exemplify the traditions that are embodied in this prestigious award. They are dedicated to further investment in the refining and energy sectors, improving the quality of their products, and raising the financial, environmental, and health-and-safety performance of their refining and energy operations.
History of the Award The Refining & Energy Company of the Year Award was first presented in 1987 to Amoco Oil Co.; receiving the award on behalf of Amoco Oil, was Sam Van Sickle, Vice President of Marketing. That initial award recognized Amoco Oil and its role in being the first company to eliminate lead, and bring American consumers unleaded gasoline in all octane grades. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, companies were typically honored for bringing to market the gasoline formulations that set worldwide standards for outstanding performance and Environmental Excellence.
What Makes a Winner? Our industry continues on a path to greater globalization through harmonized fuel standards, worldwide crude and products partnerships, and instant trading over electronic networks. It has been a pleasure—and a challenge—to select the recipients of this award each year from among the many worthy candidates. We are gratified to see that our choices have withstood the test of time, and we are honored that many past recipients are here with us this year to celebrate the 2013 Refining & Energy Company of the Year Awards. The Refining & Energy Company of the Year Awards recognize individual and company commitment to investment and operational excellence and to serving the broader public good. In selecting the honorees, the editorial staff of FUEL magazine and Hart Energy Publishing, LP considers personal and corporate achievement in three primary categories:
1 1 Cleaner Environment. Producing cleaner, higherquality gasoline and diesel fuel is among the greatest achievements recognized each year.
2 2 Investment and Corporate Growth. The award recognizes the highest operational standards for international refining. Recipients also demonstrate innovative use of resources, often in a difficult environment.
3 3 Vision. Responding only to current conditions will These companies and their executive leaders made commitments to completing the national lead phaseout, reducing high levels of aromatics
