quick hits • Junior right-hander Sean Kennel enters the weekend leading the Southland Conference with a 1.56 ERA. The Slidell, La., native has worked at least six innings in all five starts this season and has allowed more than one earned run just once. • Shortstop Ben Hernandez was named conference hitter of the week (3/18) by College Sports Madness after hitting .500 and not striking out in 21 plate appearances. • Senior left-hander Jordan Hymel threw the fifth no-hitter in school history against Texas Southern (3/3). Hymel was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball, College Baseball Insider Louisville Slugger Central Region Pitcher of the Week, Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week, LSWA Louisiana Pitcher of the Week and College Sports Madness Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance. • First baseman Aaron Haag had a great day at the plate in support of Hymel’s no-hit pitching performance (3/3). The former JUCO All-American was 3-for-4 with a two-run HR, a pair of doubles, a walk and 7 RBIs. • Hernandez was named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week (2/19) after batting .714 (5-for-7) against UT-Martin with five runs scored and three RBIs. The Zachary, La., native also drew four walks in the three-game series. • Southeastern is the No. 10-ranked team in College Baseball Daily’s Mid-Major poll. Southeastern spent the bulk of last season ranked in three different mid-major polls: CBD’s, College Baseball Lineup and Perfect Game. • Over the previous five seasons combined, Southeastern racked up the highest overall win total (183) of any Southland Conference school. The Lions also own the conference’s longest active streak of consecutive winning seasons with six. • Southeastern’s 183 wins are the second-highest win total of all Division I schools in the state of Louisiana over the last five years, trailing only LSU (229). Rounding out the top five are Tulane (174), UL-Lafayette (149) and Southern (144). • Since 2008, the Lions are 15-6 against the Sun Belt and hold a nine-game winning streak against in-state rival UL-Lafayette. • Leading up to the 2013 season, Southeastern baseball skipper Jay Artigues was named one of the Top-10 Rising Stars in the ranks college baseball head coaches by national pundit Kendall Rogers of Perfect Game. • In his eighth season in charge of the Lion program, Artigues’ 248 wins ranks seventh on the Southland Conference All-Time Wins list. He passed former Louisiana-Monroe, and LSU, skipper Smoke Laval Feb. 16 with the Lions’ second win of the season. He passed former former McNeese State, and current UL-Lafayette head coach, Tony Robichaux Feb. 23 with the Lions’ fifth win of the season. He can move into sixth place this season with 21 wins. • Southeastern was picked to finish second in the Southland Conference by both the coaches (one first-place vote) and the Sports Information Directors (three first-place votes) in the preseason polls. Three Lions earned preseason honors, including Dylan Hills (first team), Ben Hernandez (second team) and Jordan Hymel (second team).
