THE WEEK AHEAD The Southern Connecticut State University men’s soccer team is on the road for two crucial Northeast-10 Conference matches this week. SCSU visits AIC on Oct. 8 (4 p.m.) and No. 20 Southern New Hampshire on Oct. 12 (7 p.m.). ALL-TIME VS. AIC To date, the Owls are 31-0-2 all-time against AIC. ALL-TIME VS. SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE SCSU leads the all-time series with SNHU by an 28-8-8 margin. OWLS HAVE A CLEAN WEEK SCSU earned a pair of clean sheets this week, shutting out Le Moyne and Stonehill by 2-0 scores. Against Le Moyne, Daquan King had a goal and an assist. • In the Stonehill match, King and Ross McGibney scored first half goals to give the Owls the win. • The two shutouts last week increased Stephen Sasso’s season total to four. NAEF SELECTED TO HONOR ROLL Sophomore Tyler Naef was named to the Northeast-10 Men’s Soccer Weekly Honor Roll for the week of Sept. 30. The midfielder tallied both of the Owls’ goal during the week, including the match winning goal in overtime against St. Rose on Sept. 24. WORKING OVERTIME Through the first third of its season, 90 minutes were not enough for SCSU. Three of the Owls’ first five matches went to bonus time. SASSO HONORED Junior goalkeeper Stephen Sasso was named to the Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 23. The Orange, Conn. native made a diving stop on a breakaway shot just before the second half buzzer to force overtime in the Owls’ 0-0 draw with Assumption on Sept. 18. Sasso had seven saves over the 110 minutes. JOSLYN NAMED ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Kevin Joslyn was named Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week on Sept 16. The freshman forward scored twice in the Owls’ 3-1 victory over Bentley on Sept. 14.

OWLS WIN NE-10 OPENER SCSU opened NE-10 play with a 3-1 victory on Sept. 14 against Bentley. Freshman Kevin Joslyn scored twice, including one just 47 seconds into the match. Sophomore Sebastian Brems also scored for the Owls. BLISS NAMED CREW’S HEAD COACH Former Southern Connecticut State University men’s soccer All-American Brian Bliss was named Interim Head Coach of the Columbus Crew in early September. Bliss had previously served as the team’s Technical Director. Bliss joins another former Owl, Mike Petke, as current head coaches in Major League Soccer. IN THE PRESEASON NE-10 COACHES POLL SCSU was picked fifth in the NE-10 preseason coaches poll. The Owls received 122 points. Southern New Hampshire was chosen as the conference favorite.

THE CAPTAINS Head Coach Tom Lang announced that redshirt senior Ross McGibney and sophomore Jonas Folstad will captain the Owls this fall. WELCOME BACK Sophomore Daquan King is the Owls’ returning leading scorer. The forward was named to the Northeast-10 Conference Men’s Soccer All-Rookie team after having a strong freshman season. King finished the year with four goals and 10 total points, which was good enough for second on the team. WELCOME TO THE CLUB The Owls welcome nine newcomers to the squad for the 2013 season - Sebastian Brems, Adam DiCiccio, Kevin Joslyn, Leandro Medel, Ignacio Navarro, Brandyn Rowlinson, Christian Samaniego, Alex Soriano and Marby Veasquez. IN SEASON OPENERS The Owls are 30-9-6 in season openers. PETKE NAMED HEAD COACH OF RED BULLS Mike Petke, a former All-American and standout on the 1995 Southern Connecticut State University men’s soccer National Championship squad, was named the head coach of the New York Red Bulls during the Owls’ off-season. DIKRANIAN INDUCTED Former Southern Connecticut State University men’s soccer coach Bob Dikranian was selected for induction into the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Hall of Fame Class of 2013. The induction took place on Jan. 18 during the NSCAA Awards Banquet at the 2013 NSCAA Convention in Indianapolis. • Dikranian founded the Southern Connecticut State men’s soccer program in 1966 and in 21 seasons, amassed a 227-94-21 overall record while setting the foundation for the benchmark Division II program in the nation. His teams appeared in 14 NCAA Division II tournaments, including six straight trips to the semifinals (1978-83). He guided the Owls’ to their firstever NCAA championship in 1987 and was a two-time NCAA National Coach of the Year.
