2013 William Paterson Baseball Head Coach Mike Lauterhahn The 2012 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Coach of the Year, former William Paterson standout Mike Lauterhahn is in his sixth season as his alma mater’s head coach in 2013. During his first year at the helm of the William Paterson program, the Pioneers were 23-19 overall and earned their first postseason victory since 2004, defeating host Montclair State 8-6 in the opening game of the 2008 NJAC Tournament. Three of his players earned selections to the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) All-State Team, including Mike Guadango, a first-team all-conference and second-team all-America honoree. In 2009, Lauterhahn led the Pioneers to a 24-17 overall record and a 12-6 mark in NJAC play, as William Paterson reached the finals of the conference tournament. Seven of his charges earned all-NJAC laurels, including three first-team honorees, and Guadango was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-America Team for the second straight year (third team). In 2010, the Pioneers battled through injuries to compile a 16-21-1 overall mark, led by junior lefty pitcher Brett Carroll, who was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft. Last spring, William Paterson, led by ABCA and D3baseball.com all-American Adam Derner, was 29-13 overall, reaching the second round of the NJAC Tournament. Prior to returning to his alma mater, Lauterhahn served as the varsity head coach at Rutherford High School (2001-07), leading the Bulldogs to a 129-55-1 record during his seven seasons, the 2004 and 2005 Group 2 state titles, Group 2 runner-up finishes in 2001 and 2003, and the Bergen County Scholastic League’s (BCSL) American Division crowns in 2001 and 2003. The 2005 Bergen County, BCSL-American and northjerseysports.com Coach of the Year, Lauterhahn sent more than 20 of his former student-athletes on to play in the college ranks, and mentored three more who signed contracts with Major League Baseball clubs. An all-New Jersey Athletic Conference outfielder for the Pioneers after transferring from Rutgers-Newark, Lauterhahn helped lead William Paterson to a 56-24 two-year record (1993-94), the 1993 NJAC title and a berth in that year’s NCAA Tournament. Drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 1994, he spent two years in the Cubs’ farm system before returning to William Paterson to finish his studies in 1997.
ances and four starts against NJAC foes, he was 3-1 with a 2.30 ERA and a save, striking out 26 in 31.1 innings and compiling a .163 opponent batting average.
WP Falls to Rowan in Second Round WAYNE, N.J. – Second-seeded William Paterson (27-12) dropped a 15-5 decision to third-seeded Rowan (30-12) May 2 in the second round of the double-elimination New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Baseball Tournament. Junior shortstop Rich Guillod (Closter, N.J./Northern ValleyDemarest) made it a 1-0 WP advantage when he launched a two-out homer over the left-field fence. Rowan tied it up in the third thanks an Eric Perez leadoff triple down the left-field line and a C.J. Szymczak RBI-groundout. The Profs opened up a 5-1 fourth-inning lead thanks a two-run home run by senior first baseman Sean Kelly and a bases-loaded error that allowed Perez and sophomore third baseman Kevin McMenamin to cross the plate. A single and two walks loaded the bases for Rowan with one out during the top of the fifth inning. Perez plated two runners with his single to left, and sophomore shortstop Ryan Williams’ double added two more to the Prof lead, 9-1. William Paterson got back three of those run during the home half of the fifth. Freshman outfielder Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) reached on a one-out error and senior outfielder Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) walked before Guillod delivered a RBI-single up the middle. Senior catcher Vin Fondacaro’s (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) base hit plated Gibbons, and when Williams lost control of the ball on the transfer after a ground ball hit by junior first baseman Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge), Guillod scampered home. Three more runs made it a 12-4 Prof advantage by the middle of the sixth. Junior outfielder Eric Sellitto hit a RBI-single to short, Perez was issued a bases-loaded walk and Szymczak produced a run-scoring groundout. A Nick Kreiger single, a Mark Benak RBI-double and a Casey Grimes run-scoring single were followed later by a Sellitto RBI-groundout to plate three more Rowan runs during the top half of the seventh. Guillod singled in junior outfielder AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) to finish the scoring during the home half of the ninth. Guillod led WP at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Senior starter Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) fell to 5-3, allowing seven runs (six earned) and seven hits in 4.1 innings. Freshman Adam Miller (West Orange, N.J./ West Orange) gave up three runs in 0.2 inning, sophomore Kevin Cowan (Elizabeth, N.J./Roselle Catholic) surrendered two runs during 1.0 inning of work, and senior Matt Goitz (Hawthorne, N.J./ Hawthorne) tossed 1.0 inning and allowed three runs. Sophomore Ryan Monaghan (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) and classmate Tom Gaccione (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth, respectively. Perez was 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBI and three runs scored for Rowan, and Grimes finished 3-for-6 and scored three runs.
2013 William Paterson Baseball Sophomore Ryan Easterday improved to 6-2, allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits over 8.0 innings, striking out two and walking three. Brian Sietsma took over for the ninth inning, surrendering three hits and one run.
Pioneers Defeat Ramapo, 6-1, in Opening Round WAYNE, N.J. – Second-seeded William Paterson (27-11) pulled away from fifth-seeded Ramapo (25-13-1) for a 6-1 victory April 30 in the opening round of the double-elimination New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Baseball Tournament. Senior Tim O’Shea (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) struck out 10 for the completegame victory, and junior shortstop Rich Guillod (Closter, N.J./ Northern Valley-Demarest) went 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run, two RBI and a pair of runs scored. The No. 26 Roadrunners scored immediately, pushing across a runner during the top half of the first inning. Freshman shortstop Joe Venturino began the game with a single through the left side of the infield, was sacrificed to second by junior John Capuano and later scored when senior third baseman sent a single into center field. O’Shea worked out of a bit of a tight spot when freshman catcher Ryan Rinsky and sophomore outfielder Zach Carroll started the top of the fourth with base hits, but a fly ball to right and two strikeouts ended the threat. WP loaded the bases with two outs during the bottom half of the same frame, but senior outfielder Ryan Gibbons’ (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) long fly ball was caught by Ramapo right fielder Dave Jacob on the warning track. The Pioneers seized the lead with a two-run fifth. Guillod opened the inning with a home run over the fence in left-center field. Junior first baseman Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./ Old Bridge) later drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored via sophomore designated hitter Mike Arnold’s (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) two-out single to left. Guillod led off the home half of the seventh with a base hit to center. Senior catcher Vin Fondacaro’s (Pompton Plains, N.J./ Pequannock Twp.) come-backer was handled and thrown to first, but Guillod was running hard on the play, and junior first baseman Brandon Berger’s throw to third was off line, allowing Guillod to come all the way around from first and cross the plate to hand William Paterson a 3-1 edge. WP tacked on three more during the eighth. Arnold delivered a leadoff base hit up the middle and was sacrificed to second by junior second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills). Freshman outfielder Tyler Garguilo’s (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) RBI-single to right center plated Arnold, and an error from a ball off the bat of junior outfielder AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./ West Orange) was enough to allow Garguilo to cross the plate. Guillod singled in Flores for the final run of the day. Arnold was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, and Ptaszynski finished 2-for-3. O’Shea improved to 6-1, scattering seven hits and issuing two walks as William Paterson ran its win streak to seven games. Senior second baseman Anthony Vinci had the only multi-hit effort for the Roadrunners at 2-for-4. Senior starter Travis Zilg

fell to 4-2, surrendering three runs on nine hits over 7.0 innings of work, walking four and striking out three.
Regular Season vs. Kean WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (20-9, 8-3 NJAC) dropped a 9-4 decision to visiting No. 2/3 Kean (25-6, 9-2 NJAC) in a battle of first-place New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) baseball teams April 18 at Jeff Albies Field. The Pioneers struck first, crossing the plate once during the bottom of the second. Junior first baseman Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) hit a leadoff single to left field and was sacrificed to second by junior shortstop Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield). Sophomore designated hitter Mike Arnold (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) drilled a fly ball to the deepest part of the field, hitting off the base of the center-field fence, and Haughney easily scored on the double. The Cougars answered with a two-run third. Two hit by pitches put Tyler Smarslok and Nick Ramagli aboard with two outs. Junior Joe O’Connor’s base hit to right drove in Smarslok and tied the score, leaving Kean with runners on the corners. The Cougars ran the delayed double steal and the throw to the plate was late. Senior catcher Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) tried to catch and swipe the tag all in one motion, but the ball popped out and Kean owned a 2-1 lead. The Cougars extended their lead by the middle of the fifth. Base hits by Smarslok and Ramagli and a walk issued to O’Connor loaded the bases for freshman first baseman Salvatore Taormina. His single to left was overrun by freshman Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), allowing two extra runs to score on the play and make it a 5-1 score. Base hits by junior second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) and junior outfielder AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) were followed by a Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) liner back up the middle, plating Ptaszynski with one out in the bottom half of the fifth. Junior third baseman Rich Guillod (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley-Demarest) represented the tying run at the plate, but his blast into the neighboring softball field was on the wrong side of the left-field foul pole. Guillod later popped out, and WP was unable to take further advantage of the scoring opportunity. Ramagli’s fly ball landed just over the padding on top of the fence in left, pushing Kean’s lead to 6-2 during the top half of the seventh inning. WP fought back for a pair of eighth-inning runs, using base hits by Gibbons and Guillod and a two-run single up the middle off Pasternak’s bat. Kean finished the scoring with three in the ninth. Ramagli singled in sophomore third baseman Andy Lopez, and later stole third and scored when the throw bounced into left field. With pinch runner Connor Paglia on first and O’Connor on third, the Cougars again employed the double steal for the final run of the game. Gibbons was 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored, Guillod finished 2-for-4 and Pasternak drove in a pair of runs for the Pioneers. Senior Tim O’Shea (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) allowed six runs (four earned) and six hits in 7.0 innings, striking out five and walking four (4-1). Sophomore Ryan Monaghan (Bergenfield,
2013 William Paterson Baseball N.J./Bergenfield) gave up two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings, and classmate Joe Moran (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) surrendered a run and two hits in 0.1 inning. Ramagli went 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Charles Thielmann threw the complete game (6-1), allowing four runs and nine hits while striking out six and walking two. UNION, N.J. – William Paterson (20-10, 8-4 NJAC) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but couldn’t hold on to the lead at No. 2/3 Kean (26-6, 10-2 NJAC), dropping a 4-2 decision on April 19. Sophomore Mike Arnold (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) led off the Pioneer half of the third with a walk and advanced to third on junior second baseman Scott Ptaszynski’s (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) single through the right side. The first run of the game was plated on a wild pitch, which also allowed Ptaszynski to move into scoring position. Freshman left fielder Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) reached on a fielder’s choice bunt, and moved to second on an AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) ground ball to the left side. Garguilo scored on a single to right center by senior center fielder Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) to put William Paterson in front, 2-0. It wasn’t until the eighth inning that Kean found the scoreboard. Freshman Matt Meleo punched a one-out single. A wild pitch would move him into scoring position and junior Tyler Smarslok forced a walk. As Smarslok moved to first, Meleo moved to third on another wild pitch. With runners on the corners, starter Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) got a strikeout of Andy Lopez, but Smarslok stole second. Meleo then broke for home for the first Cougar run. Nick Ramagli walked and Smarslok moved a base with another wild pitch. A double steal tied the ballgame up at two. Junior Joe O’Connor then gave the Cougars the lead for good with an RBI single. O’Connor moved into scoring position by stealing second, and advanced to third on an overthrow. He scored on a wild pitch to put Kean in front 4-2. Coral went 8.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts for the Pioneers. Kean’s Kevin Herget allowed two runs in 9.0 innings of work. Gibbons was 1-for-3 with a RBI and Garguilo was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Regular Season vs. Rowan GLASSBORO, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (15-6, 5-1 NJAC) moved into a tie for first place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) after splitting a doubleheader at Rowan (13-8, 2-3 NJAC), 3-2 and 6-2, April 6. GAME ONE William Paterson used another dramatic ninth-inning rally to take game one of the doubleheader against the Profs. Back-to-back errors by the Rowan defense and a fielder’s choice bunt by senior center fielder Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) loaded the bases for the Pioneers. Junior second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) chopped a ground ball to the Rowan shortstop to knot the game at 2-2. Another fielder’s choice ground ball off the bat of junior third baseman Rich Guillod (Closter, N.J./ Northern Valley-Demarest) gave the Pioneers a 3-2 lead.

The Pioneers loaded the bases in the top of the second inning, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Junior shortstop Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) led off the fifth inning with a single through the left side, followed by a Mike Arnold (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) knock through the middle. Gibbons grounded out to move the runners over, and Ptaszynski was able to reach on an error that put WP on the board, 1-0. Rowan responded in the home half of the fifth as Rich Powelson led off the inning with a single and scored on a Ryan Williams double down the left-field line. A sacrifice bunt and a ground out put the Profs in front, 2-1. With runners on second and third in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Profs had an opportunity to extend their lead, but an outstanding full-extension diving catch at the base of the fence in left field by freshman Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) spoiled the scoring opportunity and kept the Pioneers within striking distance. Senior southpaw Tim O’Shea (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) tossed 8.0 hard-fought innings with seven strikeouts and two earned runs on five hits. Freshman Frankie Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) threw 1.0 inning of scoreless relief, picking up his second save of the year. Senior Steven Melchiorre threw 8.2 innings, allowing three runs (none earned) with nine strikeouts. Sophomore Patrick D’Ascenzo closed the game for the Profs. GAME TWO Rowan put up two runs in the bottom of the first to hop out to an early lead. Catcher Stephen Petriello knocked in right fielder Nick Kreiger with a double, and Connor Grant’s single to right center scored Petriello. In the top of the second, senior catcher Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) laced a one-out single to right center and moved to third on a double by junior first baseman Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge). Pasternak’s single through the left side plated Fondacaro to cut the lead in half, 2-1. Rowan led 6-1 after one run in the third inning and three in the fourth. First baseman Sean Kelly crossed the plate on a sac fly by center fielder Eric Perez in the third. Petriello had an RBI-single in the fourth inning and Kelly recorded a two-run double. With one out in the eighth, Guillod roped a double down the left-field line and later scored on a Fondacaro single to make it a 6-2 contest. Senior lefty James Young (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) suffered the loss for WP, surrendering six runs on five hits. Matt Goitz (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne), Tom Gaccione (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) and Kevin Cowan (Elizabeth, N.J./Roselle Catholic) each tossed 1.0 scoreless relief inning. Right-hander Jeff White picked up the complete-game win for the Profs, allowing two runs on eight hits, striking out five. Haughney was 4-for-6 on the day, while Fondacaro and Guillod each went 2-for-4 in the night cap.
2013 William Paterson Baseball Regular Season vs. Ramapo MAHWAH, N.J. – William Paterson (13-5, 3-0 NJAC) knocked off No. 13/5 Ramapo (14-2, 2-1 NJAC), 7-2, April 4 to remain perfect in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play. Junior second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) led off the Pioneer half of the third with a single through the middle of the infield. Junior third baseman Rich Guillod (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley-Demarest) followed with a home run that sailed over the left-field fence. Junior AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) singled to left and advanced to second on a passed ball, and a single to right center by catcher Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./ Pequannock) plated Flores to give William Paterson a 3-0 advantage. With two outs in the top of the fourth inning, Ptaszynski laced a double to center field that allowed freshman outfielder Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) to score after he walked and stole second. Guillod stepped to the plate and roped a single through the left side, advancing to third on the throw that allowed Ptaszynski to cross the plate. Guillod later scored on a single to left by Fondacaro to extend the Pioneer lead, 6-0. After back-to-back walks and a single, Ramapo found itself in scoring position for the first time in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Freshman infielder Joe Venturino lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Roadrunners on the board. Two walks in the bottom of the fifth set up senior infielder Christian Spurr, who singled through the middle to make it a 6-2 contest. Fondacaro drove in his third run of the game in the top of the ninth, plating Flores, who had previously reached by way of an error by the Ramapo shortstop to give William Paterson a commanding 7-2 lead. Fondacaro went 3-for-4 with three runs-batted-in, and Guillod was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Junior lefty Josh Jensen (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) picked up his third win of the season, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing two earned runs. Freshman Frankie Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) slammed the door on the Roadrunners, allowing no runs in 3.0 innings of work, earning his first save of the season. Senior Daniel LaRocca suffered the loss for Ramapo, allowing five earned runs in 3.2 innings. WAYNE, N.J. – Junior third baseman Rich Guillod (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley-Demarest) delivered a one-out, two-run double during the bottom of the ninth inning, handing William Paterson (14-5, 4-0 NJAC) its second straight upset victory of No. 13/5 Ramapo (14-3, 2-2 NJAC), this time by a 6-5 count April 5 at Jeff Albies Field. A day after a 7-2 victory at Ramapo, the Pioneers entered their final at-bat of the second game of the series trailing, 5-4, but Mike Arnold (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) led off the inning with a pinch-hit single down the right-field line. He was lifted for pinch runner Tim O’Shea (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.), who advanced thanks to a well-executed bunt by Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) down the first-base line. Senior outfielder Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) knocked a single to the right fielder, moving O’Shea to third, and junior second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) drew a walk, loading the bases for WP. Guillod then smacked a two-run, walk-off double, plating O’Shea and Gibbons for the winning runs. The Pioneers got things going in the third inning with two runs. Guillod drew a two-out walk and then proceeded to steal second. Junior outfielder AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) was next up to bat and drew another walk as Guillod stole third. Senior catcher Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) drilled a two-run double off the center-field fence to score Guillod and Flores. The Pioneers got into some trouble during the fifth inning but escaped with no damage. With one out in the inning Kevin Case knocked a single through the right side of the infield. Dave Jacob was retired on a swinging strike thrown by senior pitcher Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional), but John Capuano singled to left field advancing Chase to second. Next up was Christian Spurr, who hit a pitch up the middle that loaded the bases. Coral dug deep and was able to get Scott Paulus to ground out to shortstop Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) and for the final out of the inning, keeping the Roadrunners off the scoreboard. Ramapo answered in the sixth, tying the score with a pair of runs. Chris Werr led the inning off with a walk, Joe Venturino placed a routine sacrifice bunt down the third-base line to advance Werr to second base, and Zach Carroll got Ramapo on the board with a double into left field, scoring Werr. Ryan Rinsky then tied the game with a single up the middle, bringing home Carroll. The Roadrunners seized the lead with a two-run seventh inning. Capuano lead off by reaching on a single to the third-base side, and Spurr smacked a one-run double through the gap in right-center field, bringing home Capuano. After a pitching change, a fielder’s choice with runners on the corners resulted in Spurr scampering home and making it a 4-2 Ramapo lead. The Pioneers fought back during the bottom half of the seventh. Garguilo led the inning off with a walk, Gibbons knocked a single up the middle that advanced Garguilo to third, and Ptaszynski laid down a sacrifice bunt that pushed Gibbons to second. Garguilo scored on a wild pitch, and Guillod’s RBI-groundout plated Gibbons, tying the game at 4-4.
2013 William Paterson Baseball Ramapo took the lead again in the eighth inning. Rinsky had a lead-off single through the left-side, bringing Case to the plate. His sacrifice attempt went to pitcher Adam Miller (West Orange, N.J./West Orange), who turned and threw to second in an attempt to get the lead runner, but his throw was off the bag, resulting in runners at second and first on the fielder’s choice/sacrifice and error. Another bunt, this one by Jacob, was fielded by junior first baseman Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge), but no one was covering at first, loading the bases. Capuano’s grounder was thrown home for the first out of the inning, but a wild pitch was enough for Case to touch home. An intentional walk loaded the bases back up, and WP avoided any further damage with an inning-ending double play. Guillod led the Pioneers by going 1-for-3, stealing two bases and knocking in three, including the game-winning runs. Gibbons was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, including the final run of the contest, and Fondacaro and Haughney both finished 2-for-4. Coral had a no decision to stay at 5-0, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out two in 6.1 innings. Miller’s record improved to 1-1, allowing one run on two hits while striking out two in 2.2 innings. Capuano, Spurr, Venturino and Rinsky all had two-hit efforts for Ramapo. PJ Cerrato suffered the loss (2-1), surrendering 10 hits and six runs during a complete-game effort while striking out 11.
2013 Season Outlook A year after posting a 29-win season and qualifying for the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament, the William Paterson baseball program is looking for even bigger things during its 2013 campaign. “I’ve been very impressed with the players’ work ethics,” said 2012 NJAC Coach of the Year Mike Lauterhahn. “We’ve had a very productive off-season. Our guys are playing with a little bit of a chip on their shoulders right now. A lot of teams would have been satisfied with what we accomplished last season, but we’re not and our team feels like it has something to prove this year.” The league coaches’ preseason dark-horse pick to win the conference title, WP welcomes back 15 letterwinners this spring, including five position starters and four starting pitchers. INFIELD Three starters return to anchor the William Paterson infield. Senior Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) handled the day-to-day catching duties a year ago, finishing fourth on the team with 12 doubles while hitting .297 with 24 runs scored. When the veteran needs a break, freshman Brady Pevny (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) will likely be Fondacaro’s replacement after impressing the coaching staff during the off-season. Junior Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge), a transfer from County College of Morris, has been working hard to make the conversion from playing third base, and his arm strength will be an asset. Also competing for time will be freshman Alex Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional). First base will see two new faces in freshman Jimmy Kenny (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional) and junior Anthony DeEsposito (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial). Kenny was recruited to WP as an outfielder and has been working his way back following an injury, but his offensive potential could help him find a place in the lineup. DeEsposito possesses good hands, size and strength, and swings the bat well. He also could give the Pioneers innings on the mound after transferring from County College of Morris. Junior Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) is a two-year starter at second base who has continued to develop each spring, ranking fourth in the 2012 statistics with a .333 batting average while contributing 28 RBI. Freshman Jared Guglielmino (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) has impressed the coaches at the plate, and gives the Pioneers a lefty bat to insert into the lineup. Shortstop K.C. Abel (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) saw his rookie campaign cut short by injury, receiving a medical hardship waiver after playing in just six games in 2012. “K.C. has a lot of untapped potential,” Lauterhahn stated. “He can be as good as he wants to be. He has worked very hard to get back, and now he just needs to increase his confidence in himself.” Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) has spent the last two years as the backup second baseman, but his hard work during the off-season to improve his arm strength and range could pay off with increased playing time at shortstop as a junior. Mike Arnold (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) won the starting job at third base a year ago as a freshman, hitting .329 while scoring 20 runs. Haughney will challenge him for the starting nod, and adding depth to the position will be outfielder AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange), who made most of his 38 starts as a rookie at the hot corner in 2011. OUTFIELD The outfield should be a strength for the Pioneers during the 2013 campaign, thanks to a pair of returning starters. Flores started in all but four games in left a year ago, hitting .293 while scoring 47 runs to rank third in the conference statistics. Able to cover a lot of ground defensively and owning a strong arm, William Paterson will need the junior to get into scoring position in order to utilize the speed that has allowed him to steal 26 career bases. An outstanding defensive
2013 William Paterson Baseball player due to his strength and speed, freshman Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) also could be a major contributor in the outfield. Senior Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) made an impact during his first season as a Pioneer, garnering second-team all-region and all-NJAC honors after leading the conference and ranking third in Division III with 23 doubles. Adding a .371 average, 52 runs scored, 17 stolen bases and 33 RBI, Gibbons is capable of making the spectacular plays in center field, and has been one of the program’s best leaders during Lauterhahn’s six-year tenure. Backing him up will be freshman Dave Rainville (Ringwood, N.J./Eastern Christian), a walk-on who runs well and put together a solid fall. Flores or Garguilo could earn the starting nod in right, but also contributing will be senior pitcher Tim O’Shea (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) on his off-days. An athletic slap hitter who takes advantage of his speed, and his biggest asset as a positional player may be his knowledge of the game. Also contending for time in the outfield will be DeEsposito. PITCHERS The 2013 starting rotation has the potential to be the best in recent memory for William Paterson. Junior southpaw Josh Jensen (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) is a two-time all-state selection and a 2012 honorable-mention all-NJAC honoree who led WP with a 2.70 ERA last season. A consistent performer who notched a 7-2 record in 12 appearances and nine starts last season, he compiled a 1.61 strikeout/walk ratio in 63.1 innings. After a year away, senior Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) is healthy and ready to return to the form that saw him go 6-1 and earn third-team all-region honors as a freshman in 2009. His leadership, experience and maturity will be critical for the Pioneer staff on and off the mound this spring. O’Shea is a crafty and durable left-hander who quickly moved into the starting rotation during his first year as a Pioneer after transferring from Sussex Community College. Tossing three complete games in six starts, he registered a 6-1 record and a 3.82 earned-run average in 10 appearances, striking out 47 hitters in 61.1 innings during the 2012 season. The third lefty in the anticipated rotation, senior James Young (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) made the transition to conference starter last spring, finishing with a 3-0 record and a 4.37 ERA that included a complete-game, 6-1 victory at No. 10 Kean. Sophomore Ryan Monaghan (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) gained valuable experience as a rookie, compiling a 6-0 record and a 3.47 ERA as a non-conference starter, and likely will make the jump to league play this year. Hard-throwing right-hander Tom Gaccione (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) primarily came out of the bullpen as a freshman in 2012, posting a 4-2 record and a 4.84 earned-run average. Lauterhahn says that Gaccione could either serve as a non-conference starter or as a league-game middle reliever this spring. The Pioneers have a mix of veterans and newcomers to fill out the 2013 bullpen. Possessing good velocity and a mix of pitches, senior Matt Goitz (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) will primarily provide conference middle relief after starting in five of 12 appearances a year ago, striking out 20 hitters in 30.1 innings. Both starters in high school, freshmen Frankie Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) and Adam Miller (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) have displayed good movement on their two-seam fastballs. Colasante, who controls the zone well, has big-game experience from his run to the 2012 league title at Paramus, while Miller throws hard and registers a lot of strikeouts, off-setting his fastball with a quality change-up. Sophomore Kevin Cowan (Elizabeth, N.J./Roselle Catholic) is still working his way back from an injury that forced him to miss the 2012 season after transferring from the University of Albany. Owning a good work ethic, Cowan just needs time to get back to form. Joe Moran (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) is not a hard thrower but he keeps the ball on the outer thirds and is tough on leftys. He could see an increased role after making eight relief appearances as a rookie a year ago. Freshman Cavan Penberthy (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) also is recovering from an injury that kept him off the field in 2012, while classmate Derek Hyland (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) will compete for innings as well.
