2017 William Paterson Baseball Head Coach Mike Lauterhahn The 2012 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Coach of the Year, former William Paterson standout Mike Lauterhahn carried a 194-155-3 record into his 10th season as his alma mater’s head coach in 2017. During his first year at the helm of the William Paterson program, the Pioneers were 23-19 overall and earned their first postseason victory since 2004, defeating host Montclair State 8-6 in the opening game of the 2008 NJAC Tournament. Three of his players earned selections to the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) All-State Team, including Mike Guadango, a first-team all-conference and second-team all-America honoree. In 2009, Lauterhahn led the Pioneers to a 24-17 overall record and a 12-6 mark in NJAC play, as William Paterson reached the final of the conference tournament. Seven of his charges earned all-NJAC laurels, including three first-team honorees, and Guadango was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-America Team for the second straight year (third team). In 2010, the Pioneers battled through injuries to compile a 16-21-1 overall mark, led by junior lefty pitcher Brett Carroll, who was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft. In 2011, the Pioneers bounced back to finish with a 20-17-1 record, and had six players named to the NJCBA Division II/III All-State Team. William Paterson, led by ABCA and D3baseball. com all-American Adam Derner, was 29-13 overall, reaching the second round of the 2012 NJAC Tournament. A year later, the Pioneers registered a 27-win season and earned the second seed for the NJAC Tournament. The NJAC Fireman of the Year, Frankie Colasante, led a list of seven all-league selections. In 2014, WP earned its third straight NJAC Tournament bid while Trevor Haughney was a second-team all-region honoree, and in 2016 the Pioneers reached the third round of the NJAC Tournament. William Paterson collected five all-conference laurels, including NJAC Co-Pitcher of the Year Mitch D’Amato and second-team all-league outfielder Mike Abate, who was one of nine players nationally to be named to the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Team. Prior to returning to his alma mater, Lauterhahn served as the varsity head coach at Rutherford High School (2001-07), leading the Bulldogs to a 129-55-1 record during his seven seasons, the 2004 and 2005 Group 2 state titles, and Group 2 runner-up finishes in 2001 and 2003.. Lauterhahn’s connection to the Pioneer program stretches back more than three decades, as his father, Bob, is in his 37th season as an assistant coach, and his brother, Dan (1995-97), was an all-American at the school and a 1997 draft selection of the Detroit Tigers. An all-NJAC outfielder for the Pioneers after transferring from Rutgers-Newark, Lauterhahn helped lead William Paterson to a 56-24 two-year record (1993-94), the 1993 NJAC title and a berth in that year’s NCAA Tournament. Drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 1994, he spent two years in the Cubs’ farm system before returning to William Paterson to finish his studies.

He came on in relief March 7 against Farmingdale State, tossing 3.0 shutout innings and scattering four hits while walking two and striking out two during a 6-0 victory. Rosenberg started the first game of a seven-inning doubleheader March 12 against St. Norbert, giving up four hits, one unearned run and three walks over 7.0 innings while posting six punchouts in a game that WP later lost in eight innings, 4-1.

WP fought back for five runs during the top of the fifth inning. Ferrara was hit by a pitch and Dorio walked before Hoagland came up with an RBI-double. After a strikeout, junior catcher Jorge Solodkin (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) and sophomore left fielder Jon Bernotas (Andover, N.J./Newton) were issued bases on balls to force in a run, and a flyout led to a two-run double by freshman right fielder Eric Breun (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) and an RBI-single by junior first baseman Bernard Brito (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) for a 12-6 game. The Lions scored two runs apiece during the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to finish the scoring. The Lions capitalized on a leadoff error and Zachary Shindler single up the middle to break the scoreless deadlock during the bottom of the third inning. The Pioneers used a two-out walk issued to freshman second baseman Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst), a passed ball and a single down the right-field line by senior left fielder Mike Rowe (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) to forge a 1-1 tie in the sixth. After two fly balls to start the ninth, TCNJ strung together a single to right center, a walk and a base hit to left center to plate the winning run. Junior designated hitter Austin Lindsay struck out to start the top of the second inning, but reached base when the pitch got by WP’s catcher. A failed pickoff attempt and sacrifice advanced him to third base, and freshman left fielder Jacob Simon’s groundout to the right side of the infield allowed the Lions to take a 1-0 lead. TCNJ added another score in the third with a double, failed pickoff and attempted first-and-third double steal.

The Pioneers leveled the score during the home half of the fourth inning. Junior center fielder Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) opened the frame with a base hit to right and senior first baseman Eriq Colón (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) drilled a double to left. Freshman second baseman Vin Dorio’s (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) ground ball to the first baseman plated Hoagland, and senior left fielder Mike Rowe (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) followed with an RBI-single through the right side. Sophomore first baseman Tommy McCarthy tripled to center and scampered home thanks to a wild pitch, handing The College of New Jersey a 3-2 edge in the fifth. WP answered with a two-run bottom of the fifth, stringing together a two-out Lion error, Colón run-scoring double to right center and Dorio RBI-single up the middle. The Pioneers made it a 5-3 game after six with a Jorge Solodkin (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) base hit, Carlos Perez (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) fielder’s choice, Mike Abate (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) double into the corner in left and TCNJ error. Simon tripled to the left-center gap to open the top of the seventh inning and McCarthy immediately followed with a base hit through the left side of the infield to cut WP’s advantage to 5-4. A leadoff error, sacrifice, walk, fielder’s choice and base on balls loaded the bags with two outs in the top of the eighth, and McCarthy’s double delivered the tying and go-ahead runs. Colón finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and pair of runs scored. Rowe was 3-for-4 and drove in a run, while Solodkin finished 3-for-4. Sophomore starter Corey Martinez (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk over 6.0 innings, striking out three. Regular Season vs. No. 2 Seed Ramapo Game One WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (12-15-2, 5-6 NJAC) carried a one-run lead into the top of the ninth inning, but Ramapo (15-14, 8-3 NJAC) rallied during its final at-bat for a 14-7 baseball victory April 20. The Roadrunners broke the scoreless deadlock during the top of the third inning, stringing together a pair of two-out singles and a two-run triple by senior center fielder Brandon Martinez. Ramapo tacked on three more in the fifth. A walk, sacrifice and base hit left runners on the corners with one out, followed by three consecutive RBI-singles. The Pioneers fought back with a five-run home half of the fifth inning. Three straight one-out singles by sophomore left fielder
2017 William Paterson Baseball Garett Wiedemann (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), freshman second baseman Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) and freshman shortstop Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) loaded the bases for senior right fielder Mike Rowe (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove), who delivered two runs with a base hit up the middle. Junior center fielder Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) doubled in Ferrara, and a strikeout and Mike Knauf (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) base on balls again loaded the bags. Freshman third baseman Carlos Perez (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) and freshman designated hitter Eric Breun (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) each drew walks, forcing across two runs and tying the game at 5-5. WP took its first lead of the game when Dorio walked, was sacrificed to second by Ferrara and scored on a Rowe single up the middle during the home half of the sixth. The Roadrunners got the run back in the top of the seventh with a pair of bases on balls and a run-scoring single through the left side by junior designated hitter Matt Chemis. The Pioneers staked themselves to a 7-6 lead when Ferrara and Hoagland both doubled during the home half of the eighth. A single, walk and fielder’s choice gave Ramapo runners on first and second with one out in the ninth. Chemis tied the game at 7-7 with an RBI-single up the middle, and a base on balls and hit by pitch pushed the Roadrunners ahead by an 8-7 count. Ramapo went on to score six more runs with three singles, a hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly. Rowe finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, and Hoagland hit a pair of doubles as part of a 3-for-5 effort that included two RBI and a run scored. Sophomore starter Corey Martinez (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) went 4.1 innings and surrendered five runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out three. Junior Mario Danza (Monroe, N.J./Monroe Twp.) allowed a hit and a walk during 1.2 scoreless innings, while senior Frank Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) gave up eight runs, six hits and four walks in 2.1 innings on the hill (0-1). Freshman Zach Polzer (North Haledon, N.J./Passaic County Tech) tossed the final 0.2 inning of one-run, one-hit ball. Martinez was 4-for-5 with a triple, five RBI and two runs scored for Ramapo. Sophomore Greg Westhelle (2-2) allowed one hit while striking out two during 0.2 inning of work to pick up the win. Game Two MAHWAH, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (12-16-2, 5-7 NJAC) suffered a 19-4 loss at Ramapo (16-14, 9-3 NJAC) April 21. The Pioneers struck first when freshman shortstop Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) opened the contest with a single to center field, was sacrificed to second by freshman second baseman Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) and scored when junior right fielder Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) sent a base hit down the left-field line. Ramapo crossed the plate three times during their first at-bat, thanks to a pair of a singles, a double, sacrifice bunt, sac fly and error. Three straight singles by Dorio, Hoagland and senior first baseman Eriq Colón (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) loaded the bases with no one out in the fourth. A fielder’s choice from senior designated hitter Mike Knauf (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and a squeeze bunt by junior catcher Jorge Solodkin (Short Hills, N.J./ Millburn) cut the margin to 6-3. The Roadrunners plated two runs during both the fifth and sixth innings, and extended their lead to 10-3 in the seventh. Ferrara was issued a walk to lead off the top of the eighth, moved to second via a Hoagland single and scored on a fielder’s choice and error. Ramapo touched home eight times in the bottom of the eighth with five singles, one double, two walks, a pair of hit by pitches and an error. Hoagland went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and run scored. Sophomore Eric Rosenberg (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) gave up 10 runs (nine earned), 16 hits and two walks during 5.0 innings as the starter (0-2), while classmate Jeff Lombardi (Kendall Park, N.J./ South Brunswick) allowed one hit over 1.0 inning of relief. Sophomore Kevin Ludden (Monroe, N.J./Monroe Twp.) surrendered four hits, four runs (two earned) and a walk while striking out two in 1.1 innings, and sophomore Jon Bernotas (Andover, N.J./Newton) tossed the final 0.2 inning and gave up five runs, four hits and two walks. Senior center fielder Brandon Martinez was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored for Ramapo. Sophomore CJ Growney went 8.0 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits and two walks while collecting seven strikeouts (4-3).
Regular Season vs. No. 3 Seed Rowan William Paterson (15-19-2, 8-10 NJAC) fought its way into the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Baseball Tournament with an 8-6, 4-3 Senior Day sweep of Rowan (26-14, 10-8 NJAC) April 29. Game One Two runs during the home half of the eighth gave the Pioneers the edge in a back-and-forth opener, 8-6. WP crossed the plate first as senior catcher Mike Knauf (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) walked, senior left fielder Mike Rowe (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) singled through the right side and freshman third baseman Carlos Perez (Hawthorne, N.J./ Hawthorne) doubled to right for a 1-0 game after two innings. The Profs evened the score during the top of the third, thanks to a leadoff base on balls, balk, single and run-scoring ground-ball double play. William Paterson answered in the bottom of the third when junior center fielder Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) dropped a two-out base hit into left center and senior first baseman Eriq Colón (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) followed with an RBIdouble that split the gap in left-center field, making it a 2-1 margin. Rowan struck for two fourth-inning scores via a two-run triple by sophomore shortstop Matt Edwards, pushing the Profs ahead by a 3-2 count. WP again leveled the score, this time at 3-3 in the home half off the fourth with a Perez fielder’s choice and stolen base, a groundout by freshman right fielder Eric Breun (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) and a
2017 William Paterson Baseball double inside the left-field line by junior second baseman Bernard Brito (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn). The Profs jumped ahead by a 6-3 count during the top of the fifth inning, helped in large part by three Pioneer errors as well as a base on balls and a single. Back-to-back walks for Rowe and Perez started the bottom of the sixth, and an error on a sacrifice attempt allowed Rowe to touch home. Brito then plated Perez with a groundout and the Pioneers trailed, 6-5. William Paterson tied the score during the home half of the seventh. Hoagland opened the frame with a double to left center and Colón singled through the right side before Knauf put down a bunt that was thrown home, but not in time to beat a streaking Hoagland. The Pioneers went ahead for good in the eighth. An error put the leadoff hitter, freshman shortstop Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), aboard and freshman designated hitter Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) sacrificed him to second. Hoagland sent a ground ball through the right side of the infield and Colón walked to load the bases. Knauf singled in Ferrara, and Rowe lifted a fly ball to the warning track in center for a sac fly, pushing WP ahead by an 8-6 count. Hoagland was 3-for-5 with a double and three runs scored, while Colón and Rowe each contributed a pair of hits. Knauf and Brito tallied two RBI apiece. Sophomore Chris Babb (West Milford, N.J./DePaul Catholic) covered the first 5.0 innings, giving up six runs (three earned), five hits and four walks while striking out two. Junior Mario Danza (Monroe, N.J./Monroe Twp.) earned the victory with 3.1 scoreless innings, scattering three hits while posting one strikeout (3-1). Senior Frank Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) earned his seventh save by recording the final two outs, one on strikes. Edwards was 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored for Rowan. Senior reliever Rob Grilli suffered the loss with two runs (one earned), two hits and one walk allowed in 1.2 innings with two strikeouts. Game Two The Pioneers rallied for four unanswered runs and a 4-3 closing victory. Three base hits allowed Rowan to post one run in the top of the second, and a walk, sacrifice, balk and single made it a 2-0 score in the sixth. The Profs extended their lead to 3-0 during the top of the seventh inning, thanks to a hit by pitch, groundout and Alex Kokos base hit to right field. WP got two runs back during the bottom half of the seventh. Junior catcher Jorge Solodkin (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) deposited a base hit into right, Hoagland singled to right center and Colón drove in both runners with a double to left-center field. Breun started the home half of the eighth by reaching first thanks to an error, but Brito’s bunt was thrown to second to get the lead runner. Ferrara doubled down the left-field line, and the mishandled ball in the corner was enough to allow Brito to score from third base and tie the game at 3-3. Another error, this one off a batted ball from Solodkin, plated Ferrara for the go-ahead run.

Regular Season vs. No. 4 Seed Rutgers-Newark Game One WAYNE, N.J. – A four-run Scarlet Raider eighth inning helped to snap William Paterson’s (12-10-2, 5-2 NJAC) fivegame conference baseball win streak as the Pioneers fell, 9-5, April 13 to visiting Rutgers-Newark (16-6-11, 5-2 NJAC). Rutgers-Newark led off the game with a single through the middle infield by sophomore shortstop Ryan Zucker. A failed pickoff attempt at first base allowed Zucker to advance to third, and he later scored on a Josh Cote ground ball to the shortstop, putting the Scarlet Raiders in front 1-0 during the first inning of play. Junior designated hitter Jorge Solodkin (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) singled to right center in the bottom of the second inning for William Paterson, and freshman shortstop Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) delivered a base hit behind the second-base bag to put runners on first and second for the Pioneers. Junior second baseman Rob Eggert (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) flared a ball down the right-field line that was misplayed by the Scarlet Raider fielder, allowing Solodkin to cross home plate and knot the score at 1-1. Two singles and a fielder’s choice loaded the bases with no outs for the Scarlet Raiders in the top of the third inning. A long sacrifice fly to right-center field by Cote scored freshman second baseman Juan Ball, and advanced Zucker to third. A Ross Halkias single through the left side plated two more runs for the Scarlet Raiders, making it a 4-1 game. Senior center fielder Mike Abate (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) singled up the middle to lead off the bottom half of the third inning, and junior right fielder Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) reached on a fielder’s choice that put runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly by senior catcher Mike Knauf (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) scored another run for the Pioneers, cutting the deficit to 4-2. An Abate single to the shortstop and a double by Hoagland down the left-field line left runners on second and third for WP in the home half of the fifth. Senior first baseman Eriq Colón (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) grounded a ball to shortstop, allowing Abate to cross home plate, and Knauf laced a single to right field, scoring Hoagland to tie the score at 4-4. A leadoff triple by Ball and an RBI-double to left center off the bat of Zucker pushed Rutgers-Newark ahead by a 5-4 count in the seventh, and four more runs in the eighth led to a 9-4 edge. Freshman designated hitter Colin Powers singled in junior center fielder Anthony Perconte, who had opened the frame with a base hit, and Ball’s squeeze bunt plated freshman right fielder Dan Tricanico. Junior catcher Justin Marks later doubled in Powers and Ball. Hoagland opened the bottom of the ninth with a base hit through the left side, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the game’s final run thanks to a Knauf groundout. Knauf drove in three runs, while Abate, Hoagland and freshman shortstop Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) each contributed a pair of hits. Sophomore Eric Rosenberg (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) surrendered four runs on eight hits and struck out one in 5.1 innings of work. Junior Steve Duda (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) allowed two hits, one run and a walk during 0.2 inning (0-1), and freshman Zach Polzer (North Haledon, N.J./Passaic County Tech) gave up a run and a hit with two strikeouts in 1.0 inning. Junior Bryan Kopko (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) allowed four hits, three runs and a walk over 1.0 inning, while sophomore Jeff Lombardi (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) pitched the final 1.0 scoreless inning and struck out two while giving up a hit. Ball led the Scarlet Raiders at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Junior starter Dominick Fazio tossed 6.0 innings, surrendering four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks while posting five strikeouts (2-0). Game Two WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (12-11-2, 5-3 NJAC) rallied late to forge a 4-4 tie, but RutgersNewark (17-6-11, 6-2 NJAC) posted one run during the bottom of the eighth inning for a 5-4 victory April 14. The game was originally scheduled for the Scarlet Raiders’ facility, but was instead moved to WP’s Jeff Albies Field, meaning the Pioneers were the visiting team statistically during the contest. William Paterson scored first, pushing across two runs during the top of the second inning. Senior catcher Mike Knauf (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) walked and freshman center fielder Carlos Perez (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne)
2017 William Paterson Baseball doubled down the left-field line before junior third baseman Bernard Brito (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) singled to left center to plate both runners. Senior left fielder Josh Cote leveled the score in the bottom of the third with a two-run homer over the fence in leftcenter field. Rutgers-Newark went ahead in the bottom half of the sixth. With a runner on third and two outs, freshman shortstop Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) made a diving stop in the hole and threw to first, but the runner was called safe instead of being the third out, and the runner scored the go-ahead run on the play. Sophomore shortstop Ryan Zucker later added a run-scoring double and the Scarlet Raiders owned a 4-2 advantage. Three consecutive base hits by junior second baseman Rob Eggert (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield), Ferrara and senior left fielder Mike Rowe (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) loaded the bags to start the top of the eighth. Junior right fielder Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) singled in Eggert, and after a fielder’s choice and popup, Perez drew a walk to force in the tying run, 4-4. A single, sacrifice and groundout put junior third baseman Brian Boulineau on third base with two outs during the bottom of the eighth inning. Freshman second baseman JC Ball’s RBI-single to left drove in the go-ahead run. Perez went 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored. Brito plated a pair of runs. Sophomore starter Chris Babb (West Milford, N.J./DePaul Catholic) went 6.0 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and five walks while striking out five. Junior Adam Miller (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) surrendered a run and a hit while striking out three in 1.1 innings (1-1), and freshman Zach Polzer (North Haledon, N.J./Passaic County Tech) tossed the final 0.2 innings and gave up a hit. Ball was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored for Rutgers-Newark. Junior reliever Yanni Vayas earned the win with 1.0 inning of shutout relief (1-0), and junior Luis Rojas picked up his fifth save with a one-walk ninth.
Regular Season vs. No. 5 Seed Kean UNION, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (12-13-2, 5-5 NJAC) suffered a pair of losses at Kean (20-11, 6-4 NJAC) April 15, dropping the first game by an 8-1 count and game two by a 9-7 score. Game One The Pioneers scored first, but the Cougars put together a three-run third on their way to an 8-1 win. Freshman shortstop Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) opened the contest with a double down the right-field line, advanced to third when junior right fielder Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) flied out to center, and scored when senior designated hitter Mike Knauf (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) singled through the left side. A triple and groundout knotted the score at 1-1 in the second for Kean, and the Cougars used four singles, a sacrifice bunt and a sac fly to make it a 4-1 game in the third. An error and two fly balls pushed the Cougars’ advantage to 5-1 during the home half of the fifth, and they tacked on another run in the sixth with a walk, stolen base and RBI-single. A pair of base hits and an error finished the scoring in the eighth. Ferrara finished 3-for-3 while collecting a double and run scored. Sophomore starter Corey Martinez (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits and a walk, striking out four over 5.2 innings (4-1). Classmate Kevin Ludden (Monroe, N.J./Monroe Twp.) threw 1.1 innings of one-hit ball, issuing one base on balls, and senior Mike Sasso (West Orange, N.J./Montclair Kimberley) gave up three hits and two runs with one strikeout in 1.0 inning of relief. Freshman center fielder Frank LoGuidice went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored for KU. Freshman Justin Hernandez pitched a complete game, allowing one run on seven hits and four walks while striking out five. Game Two WP had the tying run at the plate during the top of the ninth, but couldn’t finish the comeback during a 9-7 decision. The Pioneers once again scored first, as freshman designated hitter Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) singled through the right side, moved to second on a Hoagland groundout and trotted home when senior first baseman Eriq Colón (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) drilled a base hit up the middle during the top of the first inning. A base hit, double, two-run single and three consecutive base hits made it a 4-1 Kean edge in the second. Kean added two more in the third, stringing together a walk, error, sacrifice and back-to-back RBI-singles. Freshman left fielder Eric Breun (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) drew a walk, and an error on a fielder’s choice off the bat of sophomore third baseman Jon Bernotas (Andover, N.J./Newton) led to a hit by pitch for junior second baseman Rob Eggert (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield), loading the bases during the top of the fourth inning. After a lineout, Dorio walked to force across a run and make it a 6-2 game. The Cougars scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth to extend their lead to 9-2. Freshman right fielder Carlos Perez (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) and Breun walked before Bernotas hit an infield single to load the bases with no one out during the top of the eighth. Eggert’s base on balls forced in a run, as did Fer-
2017 William Paterson Baseball rara’s single through the right side. Sophomore Anthony DiBartolo (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) hit a pinch-hit sac fly, Hoagland had an RBI-groundout and Colón tripled to right-center field to pull WP within two at 9-7. A two-out walk brought the potential tying run to the plate in the ninth, but a strikeout ended the contest. Colón was 3-for-5 with a double, triple and two RBI, and Dorio finished 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.
