County rivalry resumes 1/1 New Palestine Dragons (5-0/3-0) at Greenfield-C. Cougars (2-3/0-3) 7:30 p.m., Cougar Stadium Broadcast: Dragon Radio The New Palestine Dragons hit the second half of the regular season with the resumption of a county rivalry, as they take on the Greenfield-Central Cougars. The Dragons put their 23-game regular season unbeaten streak on the line against a Cougar squad that has had strong starts, outscoring HHC teams 38-21 in the opening half of games. The Dragons enter this matchup off a record-setting 84-17 victory over Pendleton Heights last Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium. NP set school records for total offense (813 yards), rushing offense (565 yards) and points in a game (84). QB Alex Neligh threw for 248 yards and ran for 200, the second-most total offense amassed by a Dragon in school history. He threw TD passes to Logan Greene, Duke Blackwell and Brady Walden in the game’s first six minutes, and also ran for three scores. RB Nick Brickens had 168 rushing yards and three scores. Freshman RB Luke Ely had 137 yards on five carries and two touchdowns. The Dragons gained 31 first downs on 49 offensive plays, including 23 first downs and 56 points in the opening half. As has been the case several times this season, three different quarterbacks led touchdown drives. Junior kicker Spencer Corey also set a school record by going 12-for-12 on extra points. He is 44-fof-44 on PATs this season. Defensively, the Red Rage allowed a season-high 395 yards and 17 points, but Adam Kincaid had an interception and Solomon Fair a fumble recovery, as the Dragons are now plus-11 on turnover ratio. Kincaid (9) and Ely (7) were the top tacklers.
Tonight’s foe
The Cougars are 2-3 after a 31-13 loss to Shelbyville last week. G-C has dropped three straight conference games after starting 2-0. The Cougars have had strong starts, and have led or tied every game at halftime. G-C is led by 10th-year head coach Roger Dodson. NP leads the all-time series 17-5, including wins in seven straight regular-season games.
Chasing marks
Senior QB Alex Neligh became the school’s career touchdown passes leader last week with three TD passes. He now has 43, three more than former teammate Blake Luker (201113). Neligh also moved to second on the career passing list last week with 3,506 yards, and needs 104 yards to catch Justin Plummer (1997-99) for the school career passing record. Neligh also needs just 16 yards passing and 131 rushing to hit 1,000 yards for each category. Senior WR Duke Blackwell had a touchdown catch last week and now has 19 for his career. He needs one to tie Josh Penley for second place on the career TD receptions list, and three to catch Tyler Walden for first. With the No. 1 offense on the field this year, the Dragons have scored on 40 of 43 possessions.
Also at NPHS
The Dragon golf team won its second straight sectional last Saturday and will compete at the regional at Edgewood CC in Anderson this week. The girls CC team won the county title Tuesday. The girls soccer team can clinch an HHC title with a win Monday vs. Shelbyville.

The 800 club
New Palestine has hit the 700 yardclub three times in its history – and in Coach Kyle Ralph’s three years at the helm, but in Week 5, the Dragons did something no New Palestine team has ever done, in tallying 800 yards in a game. The Dragons tallied a school-record 565 rushing yards and 813 total yards in the 84-17 win over Pendleton Heights on Sept. 19. The Dragons also had 505 rushing yards and 706 total in Week 2 against Richmond. Kicking game an asset
The Dragons use two junior kickers – Spencer Corey and Kyle Barton. Corey hit his first FGA in 2015 – a 33yarder – and is 9-of-12 for his career. His first two varsity FG attempts broke a 14-all tie and gave the Dragons a 20-14 second-half lead in the 2013 27-14 regional victory over Chatard. Corey kicked a 25-yarder at the gun to give the Dragons a 30-28 victory over Columbus East in the semistate. Meanwhile, Barton set a State Finals record, going 11-for-11 on PATs in the 2014 title game against New Prairie. Corey broke that school record, going 12-for-12 against Pendleton Heights at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sept. 19. Corey is 44-for-44 on PATs this season, and Barton is 2-for-2. Corey is also 2-for-2 on FGs.

Neligh a 200/200 man
Friday, Sept. 25 at Greenfield-C., 7:30 p.m.
In Week 2’s win over Richmond, quarterback Alex Neligh put forth something not seen in the program’s 48 years – a 200/200 performance. Neligh completed 16of-24 passes for 201 yards, and rushed 22 times for 221 yards. He then repeated the feat three weeks later against Pendleton Heights, when he ran for 200 yards on 13 carries, and completed 13-of-17 passes for 248 yards. The 448 yards of total offense are the second-most in school history to Blake Luker, who amassed 471 in a 2013 game against Pendleton Heights. More impressively, Neligh tallied those yards playing just two and a half quarters in each game.
Three 100-yard backs vs. PH
The Dragons had a trifecta of 100-yard rushers in the Sept. 19 victory over Pendleton Heights. QB Alex Neligh rushed for 200 yards and three TDs on 13 carries, RB Nick Brickens had 169 yards and three TDs on 10 carries. RB Luke Ely added 137 yards and two scores on five carries.

The triple-100 team
New Palestine had a 200-yard rusher, a 100-yard passer and a 100-yard receiver in Week 2 against Richmond, when Alex Neligh ran for 221 yards and threw for 201, and Logan Greene had 107 receiving yards. RB Nick Brickens also had 161 rushing yards. It marked the second 200/100/100 game for the Dragons in three outings. James Young, Neligh and Duke Blackwell turned the feat in the 77-42 win over New Prairie in the 2014 State Finals. The Dragons also had a triple-century in Week 3 against Yorktown – Neligh ran for 179 yards and threw for 193, and Greene had 115 receiving yards. They followed again in Week 4, when Neligh ran for 165 and threw for 217, and Blackwell had 112 receiving yards. Linemen experience The New Palestine offensive line returns completely intact from the 2014 state championship season. Seniors Nick Derheimer, Andrew Yazel, Matt Moeller and Michael Woodall join junior David Judy with a year of starting experience. Woodall suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2, but the Dagons have some depth on the line. As a team, the Dragons lifted 5,000 more pounds of weights this offseason than 2013-14.
Seeing green (turf)
The Dragons have made explosive plays their specialty, but they came quick in the Sept. 19 victory over Pendleton Heights. In that game, the Dragons had 10 running plays carry for more than 25 yards, and 13 overall plays go for more than 25. NP had 49 snaps in that game, with 31 going for first downs (23 in the first half) and 12 for touchdowns. QB Alex Neligh had rushes of 26, 32, 33T and 55T yards en route to a 200-yard game. RB Nick Brickens had rushes of 31, 37 and 64 yards en route to tallying 169 yards. RB Luke Ely had carries of 53 and 75T yards – the latter the longest rushing play from scrimmage this season – and RB Adam Kincaid had a run of 28 yards. Neligh also had passes of 36 yards to Logan Greene (TD), 49 to Brady Walden (TD) and 28 to Duke Blackwell. The longest play from scrimmage this season has been a 76-yard TD pass from Neligh to Greene against Yorktown.
Lots of snaps
The Dragons snapped the ball 92 times against Richmond, the second-most number of plays in coach Kyle Ralph’s three years. The Dragons had 95 plays in the 2013 opener against Danville – 64 rush attempts and 31 passes. NP had 68 rush attempts against Richmond for 505 yards and attempted 24 passes for 201 yards. NP had 31 first downs in that contest, and spread the ball around to nine different rushers and seven receivers.
“In the Red” Rage
In the Dragons’ Week 2 win over Richmond, the Red Rage held the Richmond rushing attack in the red, as the Red Devils had minus-13 yards on the ground, and just 42 yards of total offense.
Rookie impact
The Dragons have a number of freshmen making an impact on this year’s team. RB Luke Ely has played in all five games, and was the second-leading rusher against Yorktown with 76 yards. He had his first career 100-yard game against Pendleton Heights with 137 yards and two scores. WR/DB Colby Jenkins is on the kickoff return team, and OL Austin Keele started the Yorktown game at tackle. C.J. Faubion has also had a carry and Zach Neligh has played QB in each game.

Yoder to the Hall of Fame
Friday, Sept. 25 at Greenfield-C., 7:30 p.m.
Todd Yoder, a 1996 New Palestine graduate, will be inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame this fall. Yoder is one of five 1,000-yard receivers in NPHS school history, and was the school’s valedictorian in 1996. He went on to a stellar four-year career at Vanderbilt, and then played 10 seasons in the NFL for the Buccaneers, Jaguars and Redskins. He was a key special teams performer on Tampa Bay’s 2002 Super Bowl championship team. Yoder joins his high school coach, Marvin Shepler, in the football Hall of Fame. Now a high school coach in Florida, Yoder will be inducted Oct. 10.
All in the family
The Greene family provides a thread between the Dragons’ two longest regular-season winning streaks. Gary Greene was the quarterback of the Dragons’ back-to-back unbeaten seasons in 1983-84, at the helm of 20 of the school-record 21 straight victories between 1983-85. Gary is now an assistant coach with the Dragons, and his son, senior WR/DB Logan Greene, has emerged as a key player on the current team that has also won 21 straight regular season games. In addition, WR Brett Luker is a cousin of Logan’s.
Dragons in college
Several members of the Dragons’ Class of 2015 are suiting up on college gridirons this fall. LB Gabe Estes is playing at Indiana University. LB/DE Noah Grable and LB Sterling Curran are playing at Marian University, a top NAIA program. In Div. III, DB Chaz Hill is suiting up for fivetime defending HCAC champion Franklin. Among the Class of 2014, Blake Luker and Tyler Walden are playing at the University of Indianapolis, and long-snapper Nolan Guedel is at Indiana. From the Class of 2012, QB Connor Simmons is playing for Div. II Clarion (Pa.), and wideout Brandon Collins is playing for Butler. Among this year’s class, senior lineman Nick Derheimer has committed to play at Indiana State.

Most prolific in Indiana … ever
The 2014 New Palestine football team had the most prolific scoring season in the history of Indiana high school football in 2014, breaking a record set by Sheridan’s 1988 state champions of 811 points. The Dragons scored 851 points last year, tallying at least 30 points in all 15 games, at least 40 in 13 contests, at least 50 in 10 games, at least 60 in seven contests, at least 70 points in four, and a school-record 83 points in the sectional final against Beech Grove. The Dragons’ total of 369 points in the tourney is also a record. NP also set a state record with 6,635 yards of total offense, breaking a record set by Griffith in 1997 (6,560).
5th title
The Dragons’ 2014 football state championship was the fifth state title in school history, joining championships won by the baseball team (2004) and softball program (2004, 2008, 2009). It also marked the eighth appearance in a state championship game by a Dragon team, and the second by a New Palestine football team. The 1990 team, led by Hall of Fame coach Marvin Shepler, was the state runner-up and finished 12-2 on the season. In addition, wrestler Chad Red has won three individual state championships (2013-15), and will be going for a fourth this winter. NP also has individual state championships from Kyle Ulrey in wrestling (2008) and Lorrie Swegman in track and field (880 meters, 1976)

Meet Coach Ralph
Friday, Sept. 25 at Greenfield-C., 7:30 p.m.
Third-year NPHS head coach Kyle Ralph is the fifth head coach in the school’s history, the third to lead the team to an undefeated regular season, the second to lead the Dragons to the State Finals and the first to win a state championship. He came to NPHS in 2013 armed with an attacking style on both sides of the ball, which continues in the team’s commitment to conditioning in the weight room during the offseason, and it has paid off on the field, where the Dragons have won two HHC titles, two sectionals, two regionals, a semistate and the first state championship in school history in his first two seasons, and rewritten the school record book. Coach Ralph is a 2002 graduate of Cincinnati St. Xavier High School, where he was a standout lineman. He was a two-time First Team All-ACC lineman at North Carolina, playing for head coach John Bunting, and was the 2005 ACC Coastal Division Offensive Lineman of the Year. He has also participated in NFL training camps with the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers. He began his coaching career at St. Xavier in 2007, then became the co-offensive coordinator at Oak Hills High School near Cincinnati in 2008. He served there for three seasons, before becoming the offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at Withrow University High School in Cincinnati in 2011 and 2012. At Withrow, Ralph’s team averaged 34.4 points and 335 total yards per game in 2012. At Oak Hills, his 2010 offense broke or tied five school rushing records. His first New Palestine team rewrote the school record book, averaging more than 40 points per game and gaining 6,230 yards, and eclipsing that with a staterecord 851 points and 6,635 yards in 2014. Under his tutelage, the team produced its career and singleseason total offense (Blake Luker) and receiving (Tyler Walden) leaders. In 2013, Luker, Walden and James Young became the first trio in NP history to give the team a 2,000-yard passer and a 1,000 yard rusher and receiver in the same season. In 2014, the Dragons set state records for points (851) and yards (6,635) in a season. Coach Ralph is the third-winningest coach in NPHS history, and the fastest to 30 wins. Coach Ralph also has seven seasons of experience coaching track and field. He teaches social studies and physical education at NPHS.
