The Dragons outscored their two foes 128-21, with the varsity defense giving up just one touchdown in two games, and the offense led by Alex Neligh scoring on 14 of the 15 drives he has started behind center in this season. Now, the top-ranked team in Class 5A begins its quest for a third straight HHC title and a fifth title in six years, but will have to do so against one of the top contenders, a 2-0 Yorktown team that is ranked in Class 3A. The Tigers also enter 2-0 after a 35-29 victory over county rival Muncie Central last week.

Chasing a record
The Dragons posted an impressive performance against one of the NCC’s contenders, beating Richmond 72-7. The offense scored on 11 of its 12 possessions and amassed 706 yards of total offense on 92 plays, while the Red Rage allowed just 42 yards on 30 snaps. Senior QB Alex Neligh had a career game, with 201 passing yards and four TDs, and 221 rushing yards on 22 carries and a touchdown. The 422 total yards was within reach of Blake Luker’s school record of 471, and the total offense mark was second to a 744-yard performance in 2013. Senior RB Nick Brickens had a career-high 161 yards on 18 carries, and senior WR Logan Greene had 107 yards and two TDs through the air. LBs Joe Izbicki and Logan Robinson led the Red Rage with five tackles each. The D also forced three TOs.
The Tigers enter 2-0 under the direction of 11th-year head coach Mike Wilhelm. Yorktown has won 12 of its last 14 HHC games, with the two losses coming to the Dragons. Last week, Yorktown held off Muncie Central, with running backs Dawson Allen and Jordan Spangler running for 245 yards. QB Brogan Miller was 5-of-12 for 84 yards. NP is 14-5 in the overall series.
Climbing the charts
Senior quarterback Alex Neligh was featured on the cover of the Indiana Football Digest as a member of the Prime Time 25. He threw for 2,469 yards and rushed for 1,185 yards last season, totaling 47 touchdowns. He has 4,420 yards of offense, and needs 70 yards to break Blake Luker’s school total offense record. WR Duke Blackwell needs 50 yards to move to third on the career receiving list. The Dragons are already in the midst of a school-record streak with 17 consecutive wins, tied for the longest in the state. A win Friday would tie the school record for most consecutive regular-season wins, equaling the he 1983-85 teams, which won 21 straight games.
A banner year
The Dragons’ state title last season was the program’s first in football, but the fifth in the school’s history. NP also won state titles in baseball (3A, 2004) and softball (3A, 2004, 2008, 2009). Last year, the Dragons had a banner year. In addition to the football team, wrestler Chad Red won his third straight individual state title. Gymnast Regan Elsea was the state runner-up on bars and third in the all-around, and the girls golf team was a state finalist. The football, boys soccer, girls soccer, girls golf, boys tennis, gymnastics and baseball teams all won sectional titles.

Looking ahead: Mt. Vernon (Week 4)
Next week, the Dragons will return home for the Boundary Rail game against Mt. Vernon. The Marauders are 1-1 after beating Marion 50-6 last week. NP beat MV 31-3 last season.
Follow the traveling trophies New Palestine regained the HHC’s Helmet trophy with a 35-14 victory at Yorktown on Sept. 27, 2013 and successfully defended it 10 times. NP and Mt. Vernon also play for the Boundary Rail. The Dragons regained it in 2013 and defended it with a 31-3 win in Week 4. NP holds a 9-1 record in the series.
On to 5A New Palestine will compete in Class 5A for the next two seasons, due to the IHSAA Tournament Success Factor. The Dragons will compete in a sectional with Columbus East, Franklin, Martinsville and Whiteland. NPHS has played Columbus East in each of the last two seasons in the semistate, and has recently played a regular season series against Whiteland, last playing in 2013. NPHS competed in Class 3A from the inception of the 5-class system in 1985 through 2006, and had been in 4A from 2007-14.
A 200/200 performance
In Week 2’s win over Richmond, quarterback Alex Neligh put forth something not seen in the program’s 48 years – a 200/200 performance. Neligh completed 16of-24 passes for 201 yards, and rushed 22 times for 221 yards. The 422 yards of total offense was second to Blake Luker, who amassed 471 in a 2013 game against Pendleton Heights. More impressively, Neligh totaled those yards playing just two and a half quarters. The Dragons totaled 505 rushing yards, and the 706 total yards were second-most in school history to the 744 yards amassed against Pendleton Heights in 2013.

Streaking
Friday, September 4 at Yorktown, 7:30 p.m.
New Palestine is in the midst of several streaks. Last year’s undefeated season set the school record for most overall wins, but the Dragons are still three victories shy of the school record for regular-season victories, a streak of 21 set over three seasons from 1983-85. The Dragons would need to run the table in the HHC for a third straight year to tie the conference mark for consecutive HHC victories, which was set by the 2009-11 New Palestine teams. State-longest streak
New Palestine’s 17-game winning streak is tied with 2014 Class A champion North Vermillion as the longest in Indiana. Rensselaer, which was also 15-0 in 2014, saw its streak snapped by Kankakee Valley 29-8 in Week 1.
All-Star coach
NPHS coach Kyle Ralph was the head coach of the South All-Star team in the IFCA North-South All-Star Game. He also was an assistant coach in 2013.
2014 postseason honors
The Dragons were well-feted after the 2014 season. DE/LB Noah Grable was named the Mr. Football position award winner at defensive end, and was one of seven Dragons to be named All-State. Two returning players, Alex Neligh and Joe Izbicki, were named All-State. Both were Junior All-State players by the IFCA. Neligh was also the AP All-State QB. Graduated seniors James Young (AP), Grable (AP, IFCA top 50), Gabe Estes (AP, IFCA top 50), Garrett Kuhn (AP) and Sterling Curran (IFCA) were named All-State.
Yoder to the Hall of Fame
Todd Yoder, a 1996 New Palestine graduate, will be inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame this fall. Yoder is one of five 1,000-yard receivers in NPHS school history, and was the school’s valedictorian in 1996. He went on to a stellar four-year career at Vanderbilt, and then played 10 seasons in the NFL for the Buccaneers, Jaguars and Redskins. He was a key special teams performer on Tampa Bay’s 2002 Super Bowl championship team. Yoder joins his high school coach, Marvin Shepler, in the football Hall of Fame. Yoder is now coaching high school football in Florida.
Dragons in college Several members of the Dragons’ Class of 2015 are suiting up on college gridirons this fall. LB Gabe Estes is playing at Indiana University. LB/DE Noah Grable and LB Sterling Curran are playing at Marian University, one of the top NAIA programs. In Div. III, RB James Young is playing for Rose-Hulman and DB Chaz Hill is suiting up for five-time defending HCAC champion Franklin. Among the Class of 2014, Blake Luker and Tyler Walden are playing at the University of Indianapolis, and longsnapper Nolan Guedel is at Indiana. 2012 grad Connor Simmons is playing for Div. II Clarion (Pa.). Among this year’s class, senior lineman Nick Derheimer has committed to play at Indiana State.
Most prolific in Indiana … ever The 2014 New Palestine football team had the most prolific scoring season in the history of Indiana high school football in 2014, breaking a record set by Sheridan’s 1988 state champions of 811 points. The Dragons scored 851 points last year, tallying at least 30 points in all 15 games, at least 40 in 13 contests, at least 50 in 10 games, at least 60 in seven contests, at least 70 points in four, and a school-record 83 points in the sectional final against Beech Grove. The Dragons’ total of 369 points in the tourney is also a record. NP also set a state record with 6,635 yards of total offense, breaking a record set by Griffith in 1997 (6,560).

The 700 club
Friday, September 4 at Yorktown, 7:30 p.m.
New Palestine has hit the 700 club twice in its history – and in Coach Kyle Ralph’s three years at the helm. Week 2’s 72-7 win over Richmond was one of those. The Dragons amassed 701 total yards, including a record 505 on the ground, in the victory. Under Coach Ralph, the Dragons have topped 475 yards of total offense 12 times, including six times in 2014 and once in 2015. The Dragons’ 508 rushing yards are the most on record. Turn it over
The Dragons have started the season plus-5 in turnover margin. NP had two takeaways – both interceptions – against Lawrenceburg. Against Richmond, the Dragons recovered two fumbles and Logan Greene had an interception. NP has yet to turn the ball over this season. The Dragons have turned all five opponent turnovers into touchdowns – scoring 35 points off turnovers. Adam Kincaid and Nick Brickens also have interceptions this season.
The triple-century team
New Palestine had a 200-yard rusher, a 100-yard passer and a 100-yard receiver in Week 2 against Richmond, when Alex Neligh ran for 221 yards and threw for 201, and Logan Greene had 107 receiving yards. RB Nick Brickens also had 161 rushing yards. It marked the second 200/100/100 game for the Dragons in three outings. James Young, Neligh and Duke Blackwell turned the feat in the 77-42 win over New Prairie in the 2014 State Finals.
Lots of snaps
The Dragons snapped the ball 92 times against Richmond, the second-most number of plays in coach Kyle Ralph’s three years. The Dragons had 95 plays in the 2013 opener against Danville – 64 rush attempts and 31 passes. NP had 68 rush attempts against Richmond for 505 yards and attempted 24 passes for 201 yards. NP had 31 first downs in that contest, and spread the ball around to nine different rushers and seven receivers. In contrast, the Red Rage allowed Richmond to run only 30 plays and gain two first downs.
Neligh climbing the charts Senior Alex Neligh had the third-leading passing season in NPHS history last year. Neligh became the second straight 2,000-yard passer/1,000-yard rusher in NPHS history. He came into the season needing 1,088 yards through the air to pass Justin Plummer (1997-99) as New Palestine’s passing leader. Neligh has five career 100/100 games, all coming since the start of the 2014 state tourney. He has turned the feat twice this season, including a 200/200 game against Richmond. The Dragons have had a number of 100-yard rushing and receiving performances in 2015 100-YARD RUSHING GAMES IN 2015 221: Alex Neligh 8/28/15 vs. Richmond (22 carries, 1 TD) 161: Nick Brickens 8/28/15 vs. Richmond (18 carries, 2 TD) 101: Alex Neligh 8/21/15 at Lawrenceburg (12 carries, 3 TD) 100-YARD RECEIVING GAMES IN 2015 107: Logan Greene 8/28/15 vs. Richmond (3 catches, 2 TD)
Linemen experience
The New Palestine offensive line returns completely intact from the 2014 state championship season. Seniors Nick Derheimer, Andrew Yazel, Matt Moeller and Michael Woodall join junior David Judy with a year of starting experience. Woodall suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2, but the Dagons have some depth on the line. As a team, the Dragons lifted 5,000 more pounds of weights this offseason than 2013-14.
All in the family
The Greene family provides a thread between the Dragons’ two longest regular-season winning streaks. Gary Greene was the quarterback of the Dragons’ back-to-back unbeaten seasons in 1983-84, at the helm of 20 of the school-record 21 straight victories between 1983-85. Gary is now an assistant coach with the Dragons, and his son, senior WR/DB Logan Greene, has emerged as a key player on the current team that has won 20 straight regular-season contests.
Kicking game an asset The Dragons use two junior kickers – Spencer Corey and Kyle Barton – a due that has led the Dragons since Barton took over the kicking job at the midpoint of the 2013 season. Corey has emerged as the team’s FG kicker, and Barton as the PAT kicker in 2014. Corey hit his first FGA in 2015 – a 33-yarder – and is 9-of-12 for his career. His first two varsity FG attempts broke a 14-all tie and gave the Dragons a 20-14 second-half lead in the 2013 27-14 regional victory over Chatard. Corey kicked a 25-yarder at the gun to give the Dragons a 30-28 victory over Columbus East in the semistate. Meanwhile, Barton set a State Finals record, going 11-for-11 on PATs in the 2014 title game against New Prairie. Corey is 16for-16 on PATs this season
20 in a quarter The Dragons have made a habit of putting up big numbers quickly with 20-point quarters in coach Kyle Ralph’s three years at the helm. Already, the Dragons have scored 20 points in a quarter twice this season. 20-point quarters in 2015 (4) 8/28 vs. Richmond: 28 in 2nd quarter, 21 in 3rd quarter 8/21 at Lawrenceburg: 21 in 2nd quarter, 21 in 3rd quarter
Fast scores
The high-tempo quick-strike offense has turned up a number of quick scores. Against Lawrenceburg, the longest of NP’s seven scoring drives was 2:03, and four of the seven TD drives took less than a minute of clock time. Of the 11 TD drives against Richmond, five took fewer than two minutes, nine took less than three. Shortest touchdown drives in 2015 :36 (3 plays/70 yards): 8/21 at Lawrenceburg (Brett Luker 37 pass from Alex Neligh, 4:00 2Q) :39 (2 plays/25 yards): 8/21 at Lawrenceburg (Adam Kincaid 1 run, 4:41 3Q) :46 (3 plays/41 yards); 8/21 at Lawrenceburg (Alex Neligh 24 run, 4:16 1Q) :50 (2 plays/55 yards): 8/21 at Lawrenceburg (Adam Kincaid 49 run, 1:36 3Q) :50 (2 plays/14 yards): 8/28 vs. Richmond (Luke Ely 8 run, 1:10 3Q) Longest touchdown drives in 2015 9:43 (18 plays/78 yards): 8/28 vs. Richmond (Luke Ely 5 run, 2:00 4Q) Fastest 2 scores in 2015 2:20, 8/28 vs. Richmond. Logan Greene 51 pass from Alex Neligh, 8:30 2nd quarter; Adam Kincaid 3 run, 6:10 2nd quarter 2:24, 8/28 vs. Richmond. Duke Blackwell 6 pass from Alex Neligh, 9:09 3rd quarter; Nick Brickens 54 run, 6:45 3rd quarter 2:25, 8/21 at Lawrenceburg. The Dragons’ state-record point total didn’t just come from a prolific offense. The defense and special teams contributed 19 scores in 15 games in 2014, with seven defensive scores and 12 special teams tallies. The Dragons picked up right there last week, as defensive back Adam Kincaid had a 40-yard interception return for a score. It was Kincaid’s second defensive score in three games – he also had a fumble recovery in the end zone in the semistate against Columbus East on Nov. 21, 2014. Defensive/special teams scores in 2015 TD: 8/21 at Lawrenceburg: Adam Kincaid 40-yard INT return

5th title
The Dragons’ 2014 state championship was the fifth state title in school history, joining championships won by the baseball team (2004) and softball program (2004, 2008, 2009). It also marked the eighth appearance in a state championship game by a Dragon team, and the second by a New Palestine football team. The 1990 team, led by Marvin Shepler, was the state runner-up.
School records set in 2014 The Dragons rewrote the school’s record book in 2014. James Young set records for rushing TDs in a season (35, breaking Jeff Miles’ mark of 33 set in 1987), scoring (tying Miles’ record of 210 points) and one for longest TD run (98 yards, breaking Gary Hough’s record of 93 set in a 1969 win over Pendleton Heights). Young’s 5 TD game against Roncalli also tied a record. Duke Blackwell’s three TD receptions in the State Final tied a school record held by several players, and Alex Neligh’s five TD passes in the final also tied a mark held by Matt Rodgers (1993) and Connor Simmons (2011). Neligh’s eight total offense touchdowns in the State Final was also a school record. Garrett Kuhn’s three INTs against Mt. Vernon also set a mark. The Dragons set school records for points in a season (851), game (83), both teams in a game (119, set in the State Final), victory margin (74, vs. New Castle) and total offense (6,635 yards, breaking last year’s mark of 6,230). In addition, Noah Grable graduates as the school’s single season (18, 2013) and all-time (30) sacks leader.

About Kelso Stadium/Shepler Field
Friday, September 4 at Yorktown, 7:30 p.m.
The Dragons’ home turf Is named for two New Palestine luminaries. Kelso Stadium was dedicated in honor of former NPHS principal Robert Kelso shortly after he passed away in 1983. The playing field itself is Shepler Field – named for NPHS teacher and Hall of Fame football coach Marvin Shepler. The team’s first varsity coach, Shepler led New Palestine to three sectional titles and the 1990 State Finals.
About NPHS
New Palestine High School has been a member of the IHSAA since 1919, but is a continuation of the first Sugar Creek Township school erected in 1884 on the same property where NPHS currently stands. Located in Hancock County in the southeast suburbs of Indianapolis, New Palestine has received many awards for academic excellence – a U.S. News and World Report “Best Buy” High School and many “A” and FourStar ratings from the Indiana Department of Education among them. In 2012, New Palestine was named a National Blue Ribbon School by the US Dept of Ed. The 1,096-student school’s current principal is Keith Fessler. It is the lone high school in the CSC of Southern Hancock County, whose superintendent is Dr. Lisa Lantrip. Keith Fessler is serving in his fifth year as the school’s principal. The athletic director is 1978 NPHS graduate Allen Cooper, who coached the 2004 baseball team to a state championship. Among New Palestine’s notable alumni are Angela Ahrendts, the former CEO of Burberry who is now a senior vice president at Apple Inc., former Super Bowl champion and NFL veteran Todd Yoder, longtime college football coach and current N.C. State offensive coordinator Matt Canada, and USA Track and Field standout Pat Feeney.
Meet Coach Ralph
Third-year NPHS head coach Kyle Ralph is the fifth head coach in the school’s history, the third to lead the team to an undefeated regular season, the second to lead the Dragons to the State Finals and the first to win a state championship. He came to NPHS in 2013 armed with an attacking style on both sides of the ball, which continues in the team’s commitment to conditioning in the weight room during the offseason, and it has paid off on the field, where the Dragons have gone 28-1 in two seasons. Coach Ralph is a 2002 graduate of Cincinnati St. Xavier High School, where he was a standout lineman. He was a two-time First Team All-ACC lineman at North Carolina, playing for head coach John Bunting, and was the 2005 ACC Coastal Division Offensive Lineman of the Year. He has also participated in NFL training camps with the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers. He began his coaching career at St. Xavier in 2007, then became the co-offensive coordinator at Oak Hills High School near Cincinnati in 2008. He served there for three seasons, before becoming the offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at Withrow University High School in Cincinnati in 2011 and 2012. At Withrow, Ralph’s team averaged 34.4 points and 335 total yards per game in 2012. At Oak Hills, his 2010 offense broke or tied five school rushing records. His first New Palestine team rewrote the school record book, averaging more than 40 points per game and gaining 6,230 yards, and eclipsing that with a staterecord 851 points and 6,635 yards in 2014. Under his tutelage, the team produced its career and singleseason total offense (Blake Luker) and receiving (Tyler Walden) leaders. In 2013, Luker, Walden and James Young became the first trio in NP history to give the team a 2,000-yard passer and a 1,000 yard rusher and receiver in the same season. In 2014, the Dragons set state records for points (851) and yards (6,635) in a season. Coach Ralph is the third-winningest coach in NPHS history, and the fastest to 30 wins. Coach Ralph also has seven seasons of experience coaching track and field. He teaches social studies and physical education at NPHS. New Palestine’s head coaches Kyle Ralph (2013-) 30-1 Charlie Hill (2012) 3-7 Tim Able (2009-11) 30-6 Doug Armstrong (2002-08) 49-31 Marvin Shepler (1968-2001): 200-146-2
