THIS WEEK The Southern Connecticut State University softball team is scheduled to play six games this week, beginning with a conference game on Tuesday at Pace. The Owls return home for one game against Dowling College on Thursday before hitting the road again to take on AIC and Dominican in doubleheaders over the weekend. ON THE ROAD Southern Connecticut kicked off its 2014 campaign in Clermont, Florida, where they played nine games and finished 3-6 in them. RETURNING HOME After returning home, the Owls traveled to LIU Post, where they split a doubleheader, winning the first game 4-2 and dropping the second 10-0. CHICKS HIT THE LONG BALL In the 4-2 win over LIU Post, two Owls hit their first home runs of the year. Leanna Feerick hit a two run shot to tie the game at two in the fourth, and Giuliana D’Arcangelo put Southern ahead for good in the eighth with a two run blast of her own. BUCH RED HOT Nicole Buch started off the season as hot as the weather in Florida, posting a .483 batting average in those nine games. COCKRILL WARMING UP Kelsey Cockrill also had a solid start to her season, despite her 3-3 record. She has pitched five complete games in six appearances, her ERA is 2.51, and opponents are hitting .265 off her thus far. COMEBACK KIDS The Owls were down 5-2 against Philadelphia and managed to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead and eventually win the game 6-5. Kelly Mitchell had the big hit in the inning - a double that scored Kristie Vitulli and Leanna Feerick to tie the game. Mitchell scored on a sac fly by Nora Crann. ALL-TIME VS. PACE The Owls’ all-time record against the Setters is 35-20-2, with two of those losses coming last year.
