2015-2016 Blazer Sports Roundup from the Fall Sports: The Golf team finished in 6th place at the GCAC Tournament. We had two Blazers advance to the IHSA Golf Sectional: seniors Maura Smith and Lauren Bavaro. Next fall, the Golf Team will be led by returning juniors: Ellen Brophy, Kate Cawley, Courtney Hughes, Alexandra Hunt, and Veronika Lubeck. The Tennis team was led by Coach Tebbutt in her second year as the head coach. The Blazers took 3rd place as a team at the GCAC White Tournament. The highlights include: Katelyn Sulander took 2nd place in #1 singles earning GCAC All-Conference Maureen Dudzinski took 2nd place in #2 singles Ellie Rauh and Katherine Cusack took 3rd place in #2 doubles The Swimming & Diving program continues to make more new school records each year. This season we added diving to our competition led by senior Francesca Gillis. Gillis took 2nd place overall at the IHSA Sectional Meet. At IHSA Sectionals, the team set six new team records and every swimmer had at least one season best time. It was a fantastic finish to the season. The swim team was led by captains Emma Havey (’16) and Kate Perschke (’17). The Cross-Country program had an exciting season! This fall, the team took 5th place in the competitive GCAC Conference with 3 Blazers receiving the GCAC All-Conference Award: Emma Creviston (’18), Hailey Hansen (’18), and Paige Jaffe (’16). The team went on and advanced from IHSA Regionals to Sectionals. The team took 2nd place overall at IHSA Regionals just falling short of capturing their first ever Regional Title.
The Volleyball program was led by returning head Coach Ken Uhlir. The team finished with a record of 19 wins and 18 losses. The following athletes received the GCAC All-Conference award. 2015-2016 Blazer Sports Roundup Winter & Spring Seasons: The Varsity Basketball Program won another GCAC Conference Red Tournament with GCAC All-Conference recognition to Kaitlin Aylward (’16), Alisa Fallon (’18), Lauren Lee (’18) and Annie McKenna (’18). The team went on and took 3rd place at the IHSA 4A State Tournament! That is the highest finish in the school’s history! The team was led by senior captains Kaitlin Aylward and Annie McKenna and finished with a record of 30 wins and 6 losses. Next year, alumna Monica Albano (’09) will be joining the coaching staff.
Both JV and Varsity Bowling had a great season with our two new coaches, teachers Patricia Spohnholtz and Chris Bennett. Varsity finished in 4th place overall in the GCAC Conference, while JV took 3rd place. Two seniors, Marianna Sanchez and Faith Lawson received GCAC AllConference recognition. After conference, the Varsity team went on and took 7th place at IHSA Regionals qualifying two individuals, Faith Lawson (’16) and Celia Alejandre (’16), to the IHSA Sectional Tournament. Next year, the team will be led by Nina Martinez (’17) and Margaret Nelson (’17).
Our dance team, Team Trinity, finished their second season as a team sport here at Trinity. The program practices and performs from August through May. They perform at all school assemblies and at many halftimes for volleyball, basketball and soccer games. Team Trinity incorporates many dance styles and techniques including Poms.
The Track and Field team had another amazing season and set 8 new school records! The team took 6th place at the indoor GCAC Conference and 6th place at the outdoor GCAC Conference. The GCAC Athlete of the Meet was senior Sierra Brown. The team advanced to the IHSA 2A State Meet and took 13th place overall. Brown led the Blazers at State in the long jump, triple jump, high jump and 100m high hurdles. Other state qualifiers included Hailey Hansen (’18) in the 3200m run, Kenzie Hunt (’16) in the 100m dash and the 4x100m relay – Sanaaa Smith (’19), Kenzie Hunt, Sarah Murphy (‘19), Emily Murphy (’17).
The Lacrosse Program finished its third season here at Trinity with a record of 6-8-2. Varsity was led by senior Katelyn Sulander and junior Alyssa Tomkins. Throughout the season, the girls continued to learn about lacrosse and many teammates tried new positions. Next year the GCAC Conference will sponsor lacrosse as a conference sport, and in 2017-18 the IHSA will recognize lacrosse as an official state sport. The Lacrosse Program continues to search for a home field for practices and games.
The Soccer Team finished their season with a record of 11-8-1. During the season, they were Runner-Up Champions at the PepsiCo Showdown! Varsity was led by seniors Sydnee O’Malley, Kayla Mrozik, Annie McKenna and goalkeeper Rosanna Mazzulla. They ended their season with an IHSA Regional Championship (last victory was in 2013.) Coach Dave Preston retired from coaching at Trinity after 13 seasons with 3 Regional Championships. Science Teacher Elizabeth Killackey will be the new head soccer coach. Next year, the team will be led by Kate Cusack (’17) and Shannon McGuire (’17). The Varsity Softball Team took 2nd place in the very competitive GCAC Red Tournament. The team went on to win their 12th consecutive IHSA Regional Title under Head Coach Bob Osborne. Assistant Coach Harry Johnson retired after this season after being with Trinity for the past 10 years. Varsity was led by pitcher Kassie Guerrero and at the bat by Anyssa Iliopoulos. They finished their season and strong schedule with 25 wins and 13 losses.
