It is recommended that the club hold a minimum of 6 regular meetings throughout the year and start each meeting/ activity with the 4-H Pledge.

11

Saratoga has four requirements for clubs: Each club must have a minimum of 5 members. Each club must have a local leader, organizer or advisor. Members of the club must organize as a club and elect officers. Each club must plan and adopt a program for the year.

National 4-H Week

President- works closely with the organizational leader, sets an agenda and maintains order during meetings Vice-President- must learn the duties of the President and fills in for him/her as needed Secretary- must keep minutes of club meetings, handles correspondence and mails Secretary’s Report into the 4-H Office Treasurer- in charge of all the monies received and paid out These officers work together to help the club make and vote on decisions. For more information, see the 4-H Club Secretary’s Handbook (pages 4-5).

6

Each has a distinct role within the club:

5

The four main offices are: president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary, but others like recreation leader & news reporter can be added.

Tue

4-H Club Basics As we head into the new 4H Year, each club should be thinking about the nomination and election of officers. Often, voting becomes a popularity contest. Before voting occurs, ask each of the nominees questions to help you make the best decision. For example, “How long have you been in 4-H? What are your goals for this year for our club? Are you an officer/member of any other clubs? Will your other activities interfere with your ability to perform your role?” Nominees should ideally prepare a very short speech outlining the reasons they would make the best candidate.

Mon

The Fall 2015 Paper Clover Campaign will run from October 7-18th. What is it? Shoppers at Tractor Supply Co. who add $1.00 at check out will be giving money back to the 4-H Program, at the National, State, and County Level. This directly benefits youth in our county, especially those who need help offsetting the cost of trips. We will have a presence at both Tractor Supply Stores in Saratoga County during the fall campaign. This is a great way to support the 4-H Youth Development Program in Saratoga County. Clubs are needed to help promote 4-H at the stores on the weekends and to sell paper clovers. If you would like to volunteer to help, contact Carter at [email protected] or call the office at 518-885-8995.

County Fair OOPS! Our apologies for not announcing the pig show awards from the Saratoga County Fair. Amanda Tracy was the Showmanship Champion and Kaitlin Sisler was the Reserve Showmanship Champion. Congratulations to both girls!

Saratoga County 4-H clubs and individuals are invited to create gingerbread houses for the Victorian Street Walk, which will be held Thursday, December 3, 2015 in Saratoga Springs. Each year, thousands of people view the gingerbread houses on display at the various locations in Saratoga. After being on display for a couple of weeks, the houses will be donated to local organizations like Hospice, senior centers and storefronts. If you are interested, there are 2 gingerbread kits available for loan on a first come, first serve basis. Call the 4-H Office to reserve one for your club.

Dairy Visions Congratulations to our 2015 Dairy Visons Class on their graduation: Janet Hanehan, Grace Hanehan, Chrissy Putnam, Melanie Luke, Mathew Peck, Jared Saville, Jacob Lafferty, Christian Lafferty, Jonathan King, The Dairy Visions program consists of a series of hands-on workshops and educational trips that expose young people from Washington, Saratoga, Fulton, Montgomery, Schoharie, Rensselaer, Columbia and Greene Counties who are interested in discovering exciting agricultural opportunities, to many facets of the dairy industry. This year’s class was the largest yet with nine participants, six of which were from Saratoga County. Activities took place from September of 2014 throughout 2015. Some of the activities included: a team- building weekend, Dairy farm tours, Cornell University “Dairy Discovery Day” and campus tour, hands-on dairy workshops, a three day distance tour, and tours of a diverse group of agribusinesses. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the program.

Saratoga County Robotics News: The Bot Builders competed at the New York State Fair in August. They spent time over the summer working on building a robot that was able to complete the missions that the competition set out for them. They did very well in the interview part of the competition as well. The County-wide Robotics program has started again. The program has grown this year to meeting 2X a month and will be run as a continuing activity with each meeting building on the last meeting. The small groups will be constructing robots and working on programming them to complete different tasks. It is not too late to get involved. Call the 4-H office for details. Robovines FTC Robotics has started their season as well. They have received their challenge for the year. It is going to be very involved. There is always a way to be involved with Robovines. We are looking for a photographer and public speakers and people who like to think about strategy. There is a lot more to robotics than robots!! There will be several opportunities to see robotics in action this month. On October 11 th, we will be at Tractor Supply Company in Wilton. On October 24 th, during the day, we will be holding a scrimmage with other local teams at the 4-H Training Center and then in the evening, we will hold a Pancake Dinner Fundraiser to help with some of the many costs associated with the program. Stop out and see what Robotics is all about.

Calling all Horse Lovers! A new event has been planned for the 4-H Horse Program! Calling all Horse Lovers… the 1st Annual 4-H Horse Program Open House will be held at the 4-H Training Center on Sunday, October 25th from 1-4 pm. Bring your horse in costume! We will have food, fun, riding demos, crafts, and more! Bring anyone you know (current and non 4-H members welcome alike!) ages 8 and up that have an interest in horses. You do not need to have a horse to attend or join! Meet with clubs and talk to their current members and leaders. It is sure to be a fun day! Contact Carter at [email protected] with questions. Also—an Equine Nutrition Seminar with Richard Kennedy from Cargill Nutrition will be held on Thursday, November 5th at 6:30pm at the 4-H Office. This is open to both 4-H and non 4-H Members, and adults. Learn the basics of equine nutrition, digestion, and feed requirements. Contact Carter to sign up at [email protected]

Thank You Baskets for the Board of Supervisors The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors is a key financial component for Cornell Cooperative Extension and 4-H. The funds they make available mean 4-H can happen. It is important we acknowledge this and thank them for their support. One way to do that is by creating a basket unique to your club. The baskets are provided for you. All you do is fill them with HOMEMADE and/or HOMEGROWN items. The items can be samples of projects completed over the year, vegetables or flowers grown, or food made. Top it off with a Thank You card and you have a basket fit for a supervisor. Pick a basket up at the 4-H Office and return it filled by 10 am on Tuesday, October 20th. The baskets will be formally presented to the Supervisors that afternoon as part of a special presentation on 4-H. Thank You to everyone that creates the 4-H basket and shares a bit of 4-H with the decision makers in Saratoga County. 4

Want to explore the world of photography through your phone, tablet or camera? Then you should sign up for the 4-H Photography Project right now. The project will teach a series of photography techniques, explore multiple types of cameras, give participants the opportunity to take pictures under the guidance of a 4-H photographer, and learn how to matt and frame pictures. The project will conclude with a “showing” of everyone’s photos. Saratoga County had another successful showing at the 2015 New York State Fair. 4-H members served as teen leaders in the Youth Building in areas like, Fashion Revue, Robotics, Press Core and Teen Evaluators. This year our first year Robotics club, the Bot Builders participated in and won the Robotics challenge. Congratulations on all of their success! Our members also showed animals (see State Fair Happenings animals) or sent exhibits to be judged and placed on display. At our booth 4-H youth worked with fairgoers in the project area of Robotics. We estimated reaching over 1000 fairgoers with this project. Our youth sent over 120 exhibits to be judged in the area of photography, baked goods, clothing, and more. Congratulations to all who participated and made the 2015 New York State Fair a huge success!

4-H Horticulture Do you have a flower or vegetable garden? Do you love working Training with indoor plants? Now is the time to experience learning more about the plants and their surroundings and have fun doing it. Join other 4-H’ers for our Horticulture Training sessions! You will learn about indoor plants, ornamentals (trees, shrubs and flowers), fruits & nuts and of course, vegetables. We take time to learn some facts, identify the plants by seed, root, foliage, etc. (from live and dried samples) and also learn the principles of judging. Participation in this training allows you the opportunity to participate in the horticulture judging contest at county fair and could possibly put you on the team to represent Saratoga County at the NYS Fair, and perhaps even make it to national competition. If you are between the ages of 9 and 19 and want to learn more about plants, their culture, and how to judge plant materials, please come to our monthly training sessions. Our first meeting of the new 4-H year will be held on Monday, October 5, 2015 at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Office. Mark your calendar today and plan to join us from 6:30 pm to 8 pm on October 5th. Hope to see you there! If you have any questions, please contact Susan Beebe at 885-8995. Upcoming Dates: November 9, 2015

Riding Arena Use The arenas at the Training Center are a great resource available to 4-H Horse Program members. The use of the arena does come with a number of rules. For your safety, insurance, and scheduling purposes, everyone needs to be aware of and abide by the established guidelines. The rules of use for the riding arena are:        

Use of the arenas, either indoor or outdoor must be scheduled with Ellie at CCE by calling 885-8995. To use the arenas you must be enrolled in the 4-H horse program. All members MUST have an adult present. (4-H Leader or parent). A certified helmet and proper equestrian footwear is required. The riding arena is NOT to be used for lessons. If you use equipment, it must be returned to the barn. Clean up your horse’s manure. At no time should a horse be turned loose in either arena.

Using the barn, riding rings and 4-H Training Center involve being a responsible 4-H member. Whatever you (or your horse) carry in, you must carry out. Failure to abide by these rules will result in the removal of Training Center privileges. 6
