4-H Club Basics As we head into the new 4-H Year, each club should be thinking about the nomination and election of officers. Often, voting becomes a popularity contest. Before voting occurs, ask each of the nominees questions to help you make the best decision. For example, “How long have you been in 4-H? What are your goals for this year for our club? Are you an officer/member of any other clubs? Will your other activities interfere with your ability to perform your role?” Nominees should ideally prepare a very short speech outlining the reasons they would make the best candidate.

The Fall 2016 Paper Clover Campaign will run from October 5-16th. What is it? Shoppers at Tractor Supply Co. who add $1.00 at check out will be giving money back to the 4-H Program, at the National, State, and County Level.

This directly benefits youth, programming, and promotion of 4-H in our county. We will have a presence at both Tractor Supply Stores in Saratoga County during the fall campaign (Wilton and Clifton Park). This is a great way to support the 4-H Youth Development Program in Saratoga County. Please stop in at the stores on the weekends of 10/8-10/9 and 10/15-10/16 and support our clubs by purchasing a paper clover and thanking our youth. If you would like to volunteer to help, contact Carter at [email protected] or call the office at 518-885-8995. A huge thank you to the clubs that have signed up to help including Spa City Trekkers, Universal Clovers, Trusty N Lucky Clover Club, HazMatrix Robotics Club, Robovines, Eclectic Clovers, Domestic Rabbit Club, and Inner Circle Shooting Sports. This fundraiser would not be a success without your support!

Thank You Baskets for the Board of Supervisors Saratoga County 4-H clubs and individuals are invited invited to create gingerbread houses for the Victorian Street Walk, which will be held Thursday, December 1, 2016 in Saratoga Springs. Each year, thousands of people view the gingerbread houses on display at the various locations in Saratoga. After being on display for a couple of weeks, the houses will be donated to local organizations like Hospice, senior centers and storefronts.

The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors is a key financial component for Cornell CooperativeExtension and 4-H. The funds they make available mean 4-H can happen. It is important we acknowledge this and thank them for their support. One way to do that is by creating a basket unique to your club. The baskets are provided for you. All you do is fill them with HOMEMADE and/or HOMEGROWN items. The items can be samples of projects completed over the year, vegetables or flowers grown, or food made. Top it off with a Thank You card and you have a basket fit for a supervisor. Please pick a basket up at the 4-H Office and return it filled by 4pm on Monday, October 17th. The baskets will be formally presented to the Supervisors that afternoon as part of a special presentation on 4-H. Thank You to everyone that creates the 4-H basket and shares a bit of 4-H with the decision makers in Saratoga County.

If you are interested, there are 2 gingerbread kits available for loan on a first come, first serve basis. Call the 4-H Office to reserve one for your club.

CONTEST ALERT!! October 2nd-8th 2016 is National 4-H Week. We cant think of a better time for youth and adults to be out there sharing your 4-H story with the community. This would also be a great week to wear your 4-H “SWAG” to school, games, and community events. We’ve decided to have a little competition! Whoever sends us a picture with the best representation of 4-H (voted on by office staff) youth or adults with a 4-H shirt or with the clover during National 4-H Week will win some new 4-H gear compliments of the 4-H office.

Please plan to join us on October 15th. New members are welcome as we kick off the new 4-H year. It will be lots of fun with great refreshments.

Election Day 2016 is fast approaching. Once again this year, the 4-H Leaders Association will be working with the Capital District News Election Service to collect voting results at the Saratoga County polling places. This is a fundraiser for the 4-H Leaders Association. 4-H youth, leaders and parents are encouraged to participate. This could be a great community service project, and an opportunity to learn a little more about the election process. If interested, please contact Greg at the 4-H office for details, or say yes when a 4-H leader calls to ask for your assistance. 8

Congratulations on a job well done to all the participants in the 4-H Horticulture Contest at the New York State Fair. Youth from St. Lawrence County will be representing New York at the National Junior Horticultural Association Convention in Erie, Pennsylvania in October. Saratoga County only had one contestant at this year’s state competition. Scores are based on plant/seed identification, true/false questions on culture and care of plants, plant judging and a teamwork question. Kohlby Himelrick of Gansevoort participated in the beginner division. This was Kohlby’s third trip to State Fair representing Saratoga County and did an awesome job taking 1st place in the state. Kohlby will be moving on to the intermediate division for next year’s competition and hopes to attend the NJHA convention to participate in the Junior Horticulture Identification competition.

State Fair Happenings (Animals) Many 4-Her’s from Saratoga County took part in various animal and animal related competitions at the 2016 New York State Fair. Sam Kruppenbacher and Andrei Rench brought sheep to the state fair. Sam was 4th in the first group of senior showmanship. Andrei was 3rd in the first group of senior showmanship and 5th overall. Sam placed 1st in the following classes for the Cotswold breed: Yearling ram, Jr. ram lamb, Yearling ewe, Jr. Ewe lamb, Mature ewe, and Flock. In the individual Junior contest Allison VanSleet placed 8th and Kiana Pearson placed 9th. Katielynn Evans was a part of the Senior Regional Team which placed 11th. A HUGE thank you to Lisa Wanits for seeing these youth through months of practice and her daughter Lyndsey for acting as an assistant coach. Kohlby Himelrick and Izzy Fantauzzi competed in the Rabbit Show. They both received blue ribbons (Kohlby for his lionhead and Izzy for her mini rex, harlequin and beveren.) Izzy also received a best of breed award for her harlequin and beveren rabbits. Zac Boekeloo and his dog Twister competed in the dog show, placing third overall in the Excellent Agility class and in the red group in Graduate Novice Obedience. Congratulations to all who represented Saratoga County at the fair with animals and in related events. 5

Saratoga County had another successful showing at the 2016 New York State Fair. 4-H members served as teen leaders in the Youth Building in areas like, Fashion Revue, Robotics, Press Corp and Teen Evaluators. Congratulations on all of their success! Our members also showed animals (see State Fair Happenings animals), participated in the Hippology competition, or sent exhibits to be judged and placed on display. At our booth 4-H youth worked with fairgoers in project areas of STEM and offered various activities. We estimated reaching over 1,000 fairgoers with these projects. Our youth sent over 120 exhibits to be judged in the area of photography, baked goods, clothing, and more. Congratulations to all who participated and made the 2016 New York State Fair a huge success!

4-H Horticulture Do you have a flower or vegetable garden? Do you love working Training with indoor plants? Now is the time to experience learning more about the plants and their surroundings and have fun doing it. Join other 4-H’ers for our Horticulture Training sessions! You will learn about indoor plants, ornamentals (trees, shrubs and flowers), fruits & nuts and of course, vegetables. We take time to learn some facts, identify the plants by seed, root, foliage, etc. (from live and dried samples) and also learn the principles of judging. Participation in this training allows you the opportunity to participate in the horticulture judging contest at county fair and could possibly put you on the team to represent Saratoga County at the NYS Fair, and perhaps even make it to national competition (for those 15 or older). If you are between the ages of 9 and 19 and want to learn more about plants, their culture, and how to judge plant materials, please come to our monthly training sessions. Our first meeting of the new 4-H year will be held on Monday, October 3, 2016 at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Office.

Mark your calendar today and plan to join us from 6:30 pm to 8 pm on October 3rd. Hope to see you there! If you have any questions, please contact Susan Beebe at 885-8995. Upcoming Dates: November 14, 2016

Riding Arena Use The arenas at the Training Center are a great resource available to 4-H Horse Program members. The use of the arena does come with a number of rules. For your safety, insurance, and scheduling purposes, everyone needs to be aware of and abide by the established guidelines. The rules of use for the riding arena are:        

Use of the arenas, either indoor or outdoor must be scheduled with Ellie at CCE by calling 885-8995. To use the arenas you must be enrolled in the 4-H horse program. All members MUST have an adult present. (4-H Leader or parent). A certified helmet and proper equestrian footwear is required. The riding arena is NOT to be used for lessons. If you use equipment, it must be returned to the barn. Clean up your horse’s manure. At no time should a horse be turned loose in either arena.

Using the barn, riding rings and 4-H Training Center involve being a responsible 4-H member. Whatever you (or your horse) carry in, you must carry out. Failure to abide by these rules will result in the removal of Training Center privileges. 6
