HOFSTRA LAST WEEK: September 23 - at Fairfield, 3-2 W Senior Charlotte Loehr scored the go-ahead goal and junior Stella Schoen had two assists to lead the Hofstra Pride to their fourth consecutive victory with a 3-2 non-conference decision over the Fairfield Stags at University Field. Fairfield struck first on Wednesday as senior midfielder Emily McCauley tallied her first goal of the season, on a shot from just inside the circle, at the 12:36 mark for a 1-0 lead. But Hofstra tied the contest a little more than five minutes later when junior Colby Hussong deflected a shot from Stella
Schoen past Fairfield goalie Caitlin Bennett (8 saves). It was Hussong's third goal of the season. Loehr broke the tie at the 23:08 mark when she took a quick pass from Schoen in front of the net for her second goal of the season. The Pride outshot the Stags, 10-5 in the first half and took eight penalty corners to Fairfield's two. Hofstra boosted the lead to 3-2 just 4:53 into the second half when junior Claudia Marin Samper tipped in a shot by sophomore Simca Schoen for her eighth goal of the year. Fairfield closed the deficit to 3-2 in the 55th minute when sophomore Jamie Appelberg deflected a shot, by McCauley, past Pride goalie Carys Swan (4 saves). But that was all the Stags could muster as their two game winning streak came to an end. Hofstra outshot Fairfield, 16-9 in the contest and had 10 penalty corners to the Stags seven. September 25 - vs. Quinnipiac, 6-3 W Sophomore Simca Schoen recorded two goals and two assists and junior Claudia Marin Samper added two goals and an assist to lead the Hofstra Pride to its fifth consecutive victory with a 6-3 decision over the Quinnipiac Bobcats at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. The Pride erupted for four-first half goals on the way to a 4-1 lead after 35 minutes while Hofstra sophomore goalie Carys Swan made five of her eight saves in the contest in the first period to dampen the spirits of the visitors.
The Pride received goals from senior Charlotte Loehr, juniors Stella Schoen and Claudia Marin Samper and sophomore Simca Schoen and the Hofstra defense allowed just two shots, the first which the Bulldogs scored on with 2:24 to play to close out the scoring. Only a stellar effort by Yale junior goalie Emilie Katz, who made 14 saves, prevented the Pride from scoring more. Simca Schoen opened the scoring at the 5:04 mark off a pass from Loehr for a 1-0 lead. It was Schoen's sixth goal of the year and extended her current point streak to five games. The two reconnected seven minutes later with Schoen feeding Loehr for her third goal of the year and a 2-0 advantage. While the Pride outshot the Bulldogs, 17-0 and had seven penalty corners to none for Yale, Hofstra closed out the scoring in the first half in the 32nd minutes as Stella Schoen notched her ninth of the season off a pass from freshman Madison Reed, who recorded her first collegiate point and a 3-0 lead at the break. Marin Samper added her team-leading 11th goal of the season, off a pass from junior Colby Hussong at the 62:26 mark. Hofstra goalie Carys Swan, who had no saves, looked as if she was heading toward her first shutout of the season until the 68th minute when freshman Brooke Reese deflected sophomore Kiwi Comizio's shot in front for her first goal. Hofstra finished the game outshooting Yale, 32-2 and having 14 penalty corners to the Bulldogs one.
Marin Samper opened the scoring at the 7:25 mark, off a rebound, to tally her ninth goal of the season. Schoen notched her first of the game and fourth of the season on a steal eight minutes later for a 2-0 Pride lead.
2015 Penn Monto / NFHCA Division I Poll: Here is the 2015 Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Poll, as of September 29.
Quinnipiac closed the gap to 2-1 as Lauren Belskie scored her first goal of the year, off a penalty corner, at the 17:25 mark. But Hofstra added two more goals before the end of the half. Junior Colby Hussong scored her fourth of the season from Simca Schoen at the 24:38 mark to boost the Pride lead to 3-1. Schoen then scored her second off a penalty corner, with Leigh Maxwell-Smith and Marin Samper assisting on the tally. Despite the 4-1 score at the break, Hofstra was outshot in the first half, 8-6. The Pride boosted the lead to 5-1 just 5:23 into the second half when junior Stella Schoen, Simca’s older sister, tallied her eighth goal of the year, off a penalty corner with juniors Emily Gallagher and Maxwell-Smith assisting on the play. The Bobcats sandwiched two goals around a Hofstra tally by Marin Samper, her 10th of the season, in the 62nd minute but they could get no closer than the final margin. Savanna Reilly scored her third goal of the year in the 46th minute and Meghan McCullough posted her second of the season in the 68th minute to close out the scoring. Hofstra, which outshot Quinnipiac, 10-5 in the second half, took the game honors and outshot the Bobcats 16-13. Each team had five penalty corners. September 27 - vs. Yale, 4-1 W Four different Hofstra players scored goals and the Pride team held the Bulldogs to just two shots and one penalty corner as Hofstra defeated Yale, 4-1 in a non-conference game at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium.
