FOOTBALL
HARDING vs. OUACHITA: THE SERIES Ouachita and Harding first played in 1928. The game resulted in a scoreless tie. They did not play again until 1960, where that game also ended in a scoreless tie. Harding leads the all-time series between the two schools, 30-22-4. Since both teams joined the GAC in 2011, the visiting team is 4-0. All four games have been decided by an average margin of 7.5 points. In the series history (not including the four tied games), the visiting team has won 48% of the time, with the average margin of victory being 10.7 points. Ouachita is 7-9 versus Harding under Head Coach Todd Knight. Since 2007, Coach Knight’s teams are 4-4 versus the Bisons. This year’s match-up marks the third time in four years that both teams are ranked in the AFCA Division II Coaches Poll. In 2012, Ouachita was ranked 10th and Harding 25th. In 2014, Harding was ranked 13th and Ouachita 22nd. Heading into Saturday, Harding is ranked 12th and Ouachita is ranked 24th. HARDING vs. OUACHITA: BY THE NUMBERS Last week’s win over Northwestern gave Coach Knight his 80th victory as head coach at Ouachita. Since 2008, the Tigers have seven consecutive winning seasons, the longest current streak by any university in the state of Arkansas. During this streak, Coach Knight’s teams have averaged seven wins per season. The Tigers held Northwestern Oklahoma State to 10 yards rushing in last week’s 55-13 win. The Tigers are one of four teams in the GAC allowing opponents less than 100 yards per game rushing. The Tigers have allowed opposing runners 3.1 yards per carry through four games this season. The Tigers are third in the GAC in rushing offense, averaging 287.5 yards per game. They are tied with Harding for a conference-best 6.1 yards per carry. Despite missing all but the Tigers opening drive of their game at Southwestern Oklahoma State, Kris Oliver leads the GAC in rushing with 425 yards on 61 attempts. Oliver is averaging 106.2 yards per game and an astounding 7.1 yards per carry. His eight rushing touchdowns are the most by any running back in the conference. Freshman Donelle Hoof has rushed for five touchdowns on 37 carries in the past two games. That’s one touchdown for roughly every 7 carries.
Quarterback Austin Warford is averaging 265 yards of total offense per game. His 367 rushing yards are the most by any quarterback in the GAC. HARDING vs. OUACHITA: 2014 RECAP
SEARCY, Ark. - After going down 28-20, Ouachita quarterback Kiehl Frazier drove the Tigers down the field to score and convert the two-point conversion with no time left to tie the game. Matt Ehasz would connect on a 38-yard field goal to give the #22 Ouachita Tigers the 31-28 victory over #13 Harding. The Tigers opened up the game with a 13 play, 74 yard drive scoring on a 19-yard field goal to give Ouachita a 3-0 lead. The Tiger defense held Harding scoreless in the first quarter, forcing the Bisons to punt and turn the ball over on downs on their two possessions. The Tigers second drive started on the Harding 40 after a 44-yard punt return by Etauj Allen. A 20-yard rush by quarterback Kiehl Frazier put Ouachita in the red zone. Steven Kehner scored on a one-yard run to put Ouachita up 10-0. On their next possession, Frazier found Ke’Vontae Pope behind two defenders in the end zone for a 36-yard touchdown pass. Harding answered in the second quarter with big plays by Eric Simmons and Donatella Luckett to cut into the Tiger lead. Simmons ran it in from 44 yards out to cut the Tigers lead to 10. With under a minute left in the first half, Luckett caught a pass and went 50 yards down to the Ouachita 14 yard line. Harding scored with 19 seconds left to make it 17-14, Ouachita, at the half. The third quarter was a defensive stalemate between the two teams. Ouachita scored the only points of the quarter on a 27-yard field goal by Matt Ehasz, his second of the game. The quarter ended on a 25-yard completion from Frazier to Pope with the Tigers leading 20-14. Harding forced a Tiger fumble to start the fourth quarter and scored on the ensuing possession on an 11 yard run by Simmons and take the lead 21-20. Ouachita forced a Bisons fumble, recovered by Barkley Legens, but were unable to convert. After an illegal block penalty pinned Harding back at their own 8 yard line, fullback Romo Westbrook broke loose for 92-yard touchdown run to make it a 28-20 advantage for Harding. Ouachita began to drive down the field on its next possession, but turned it over on an errant pass by Frazier. It was only his second interception thrown this season. The Tiger defense held Harding and forced them to punt, giving Ouachita the ball with 2:37 left in the game. The Tigers went to their two-minute offense and Frazier spread the ball to his receivers as the Tigers drove down the field. On a second and eight, Frazier hit Evian Hill in the end zone for an apparent score, but the pass was ruled incomplete. On fourth and eight with 22 seconds remaining, Frazier broke free for a 16-yard run to give the Tigers a first down with 12 seconds left in the game. After an incomplete pass, Frazier found Brandon Marks in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. With no time left, Frazier scrambled and scampered into the end zone to convert the two-point conversion and tie the game at 28-28. On Harding’s first possession in overtime, Zack Mitchell recovered the third Harding fumble of the game. Ouachita moved the ball to the 18 yard line for a 33-yard field goal attempt. The Tigers were called for a false-start and the ball was moved back five yards, negating a Harding field goal block. Matt Ehasz connected on the 38-yard field goal attempt to give the Tigers the 31-28 victory. Ouachita improved to 6-0 on the year and remain unbeaten.

TODD KNIGHT
After 16 seasons as head coach at Ouachita, Todd Knight is the longest standing college head football coach in Arkansas. He has proven to be a strong leader as he heads the Ouachita program with integrity and passion. Knight has guided the Tiger program through the infant stages of NCAA Division II, from the Lone Star Conference, the Gulf South Conference and now the Great American Conference. Steady improvement began in 2002 and 2003 which marked solid squads that would help build the future of Ouachita football. In the inaugural 2011 campaign, Knight led the Tigers to their first ever Great American Conference championship, the first conference championship for the Tigers in over 20 years. The longest tenured coach in the GAC and the Tigers claimed the conference championship once again in 2014, and Knight was named GAC Coach of the Year in both championship seasons. Knight was also named 2014 AFCA Region Three Coach of the Year. Knight has established Ouachita as an elite program among all Division II institutions. He boasts Great American Conference Championships in 2011 and 2014 and 56 All-Great American Conference players in just four years. The team is the only program in the state of Arkansas to boast seven consecutive winning seasons, cracking the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 in six of seven of those seasons. The team has been ranked as high as seventh in the AFCA poll, and Ouachita finished the 2014 season ranked 10th in all of Division II. Knight leads both on and off the field, and his players have been recognized for being outstanding achievers on the field, in the classroom and in the community. He has recruited and coached six professional football players, 133 All-Conference players, 20 All-Americans, three Honorable Mention All-Americans, 30 Academic All-Conference players and many GSC honor roll athletes. During the 2014 season, the Tigers finished the regular season 10-0 for the first time in program history. After winning the its second GAC championship, Ouachita earned the top seed in the region for the Tigers’ first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament. The Tigers finished the year with one Academic All-American, two All-Americans, six All-Region selections and 18 All-Conference selections. Ouachita also had a player named to the 2014 AFCA Allstate Good Works Team. Knight’s seniors have had a 90% graduation rate and the team has been involved in service to the community for many years. He has been quoted in saying that one of the most gratifying things in coaching is watching his players grow into the total man during their time at Ouachita, graduate and go on to be successful in all aspects of life. Knight’s development at head coach has come under solid leadership, playing under coach Buddy Benson at Ouachita, and later coaching under Red Parker and Don Skelton at Delta State from 1986-1989 and David Lee at the University of Texas at El Paso from 1990-1992. When he returned to Delta State as head coach from 1993-1998, he led the team to its first ever GSC Championship in 1998, also earning GSC Coach of the Year honors that year. Knight was named to the AFCA Board of Trustees following the conclusion of the 2012 football season, adding to his list of accolades. He also served on the NCAA Rules Committee, helping to make changes and restructure the rules for the game of college football along with coaches from around the country.
