SIU Men's Golf team rallies to take second place at MVC Championship SIU senior Wade Thompson finished tied for fifth place out of 45 golfers -- the highest finish by a Saluki golfer since Patrick Scheil took fifth in 2010. Not only did he win All-Conference honors, but Thompson took home the Elite 18 trophy for top academic performance. He holds a 3.7 GPA in accounting. "Wade has shown exactly what this program is about -- putting the same work ethic, drive and determination in the classroom as we put forth on the golf course," Fetcho said. Drew Novara (10-over, 20th place) and Andrew Mitchell (12-over, 21st place) also finished in the top half of the field at The Club at Porto Cima, a Par 72 golf course. Under first-year head coach Justin Fetcho, the Salukis improved five spots upon last year's seventh-place finish at the conference championship. SIU has never won an MVC title in 41 tries since joining the league in 1975, but today's second-place showing matches the best finish in school history set by the 1990, 2008 and 2010 teams. "They're the ones who put in all the work and effort and got the results," Fetcho said. "The improvements we made from the team meeting in August until now are tremendous. This program is not going to be afraid of anybody in our conference."
Bring 5 Players to the event and you will have the opportunity to buy a current/former Saluki in a live auction the night before at Pinch Penny Pub (see insert for info). If you can’t make it to the auction, we will pair you with a current or former Saluki to make up your 6 person team!

1964 National Championship Team
Following a superb regular season in which they lost only to major school opponents – Purdue, Wisconsin, and Notre Dame –Coach Lynn Holder’s golfers claimed the NCAA college-division championship. SIU defeated San Diego State by two strokes in just the second meet ever held for college division teams. The meet, held at Springfield, Mo., was restricted to just 54 holes due to rain on the final day. Holder said following the meet, “This was a great squad because we had such fine team balance.” Seniors Gene Carello and Bill Muehleman tied for fifth with 54-hole scores of 218. Tom Muehleman had a 223, John Krueger 227, Leon McNair 228 and Jerry Kirby 232. Commencement activities caused James Place to miss the meet. Carello was 10-4-1 for the season with an average of 74.6 and finished the year named as an AllAmerican. While, Kirby was 11-2-2 (75.5), Allan Kruse 9-2-0 (75.5), Krueger 9-5-1 (76.1), McNair 9-3-0 (76.2) and Place 7-5-3 (76.3). Kirby and Krueger shared MVP honors.
