Daniel Leitner FIrst Jag since 2008 selectiod to play at NCAA’s
Letter from Head Coaches Nic Brochu (Men’s) and Jaco Keyser (Women’s) ~ The South Alabama men’s and women’s tennis teams finished the year ranked in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s top 75 for 2014 – 2015. The USA men are No. 70 and the women are No. 74 in the final rankings. The men’s team went 16-9 and advanced to the finals of the Sun Belt Championships before falling to then No. 60 Troy. A 6-2 start propelled the Jags to a No. 47 ranking, thanks in part to ranked wins over No. 70 Central Florida and No. 41 Drake. A 2-5 stretch in February and March dropped USA to 8-7, but the team claimed eight of the next nine matches, won the Middle Tennessee Shootout with a 4-2 victory over No. 61 Old Dominion, and reached the Sun Belt finals by defeating No. 65 Texas-Arlington 4-1 in the semis. In addition, Daniel Leitner was named the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and to the all-conference team, along with Tim Srkala, Gerhard Gruindelingh and sophomore Tuki Jacobs. Spring GPA - 3.17 The women’s team is in the final poll for the first time since 2008-09 and is the only Sun Belt school in the top 75. They started the 2015 season with 18 consecutive victories, tying the longest win streak in school history and setting a new mark to open a year and ended up 21-3 after a first-round loss to No. 21 Clemson in the NCAA Tournament. Ten of those first 18 wins came via shutout, including five to close out the streak. The Jags went 9-0 against Sun Belt competition. Emily Newton and Laura Valkova were named to the All-Sun Belt Conference Women’s Tennis teams in both singles and doubles. Sophomore Monica Mitta was also voted to the all-conference team for singles. Spring GPA - 3.50 Over the years, both Jaguar tennis teams have enjoyed success because of two things: hard work and your support. This summer renovations will begin on the new Men’s and Women’s Tennis Suite (see enclosed flyer). These new facilities will help us remain competitive in the Sun Belt Conference. We hope we can count on your support again this year. Nicolas Brochu Head Coach Men’s Tennis
