We are currently housing at two churches in the Central Texas area and one church in Houston. Teams will need to prepare their own meals. Teams may use church kitchens. Even if your volunteer team is local and you do not need housing we would like for you to register as we want to use our groups and their skill sets wisely. Below for a brief description of the recovery efforts taking place in each area. TBDR will follow-up with each group leader to make housing assignments and to confirm the dates you wish to schedule on the TBDR Calendar. San Marcus, Texas In San Marcos we will begin working with the Long Term Recovery Teams to discovery the neediest families. We are also partnering with FBC San Marcos to discovery families who need assistance. This will be a great place for groups who would not need housing and or local day groups. Blanco and Wimberley, Texas In Blanco and Wimberley we will work with the Long Term Recovery Committee to discovery homes that will need to be rebuilt. Blanco County did not receive the individual assistance from FEMA that Hays County got. We are partnering with Blanco to rebuild homes of the uninsured and underinsured. Houston, Texas Memorial Day, May 25th, heavy rain and flash flooding to the Houston area. The heaviest rain was focused on the southwest side of the city. TBDR is mobilizing volunteers to the following locations in Houston: Baptist Temple Church – Basement was flooded and the church lost most of the contents of the building (furnishings, hymnals, educational supplies... literally everything) which was being stored in the basement while the church is under reconstruction. The building itself sustained some damage, and it will require extensive mold and mildew remediation. Unfortunately, the church does not have flood insurance and cannot afford the cost of reconstruction. Unite Orthodox Synagogue – The Synagogue was flooded as well as homes in the surrounding Willow Bend community. Texas Baptist Men is currently assisting the Synagogue, the local school and homes in the community with mud-out / muck-out and power washing. TBDR Shalom Builders and volunteers will support the needs of this community as construction projects are identified. Many of these families are under / uninsured due to not having flood insurance. Gracewood Children Home - Gracewood is a Christian ministry that rescues single moms and their children across the Greater Houston area by providing home, hope and healing.
Gracewood’s campus is loated on Wanda Lane in Southwest Houston and was devastated by flooding. Many of the residential families lost all of their belongings and material possessions. TBDR is currently assessing the damages and determining the needs of the ministry. We in touch with the Exec. Director and will let our volunteers know how we can best support this ministry which is also supported by Texas Baptist Children’s Home. Important Information to Know: If the weather is hot bring insect repellant and sunblock to use while working. If you have respiratory problems you will need to work out side or in the distribution center sorting donated items, as there could be mold present. Dress: long pants, T-shirts, and closed-toed shoes for the worksite. Need rubber boots or hard work booths. (watch for the presence of snakes) Do not wear shorts, tank tops, or sandals while working, as this will put you at risk for injury. Bring work gloves and safety glasses. Bottled water will be provided, bring an ice chest and ice for your group to keep the water cold. If housing in churches bring bed roll or air mattress, bedding, towels, toiletries. TOOLS AND SUPPLIES: If you can transport them bring clippers, shovels, rakes, brooms, etc. If you cannot transport tools they will be provided at the worksite. Please remember to be flexible and try to do complete the project to the best of your ability. Thanks again for your commitment and passion to help individuals impacted by flooding in Central Texas and Houston. Let us know if you have any questions.
